Measurement of Thomson-scattering spectra with continuous angular resolution (invited)

Here, a novel Thomson-scattering diagnostic with continuous angular resolution over a span of 120° was developed for the characterization of plasmas produced at the Omega Laser Facility. Spectrally resolving light scattered from electron plasma wave features as a function of emission angle provides a means to efficiently probe a large range of plasma frequencies and k vectors. Together, these spectra contain critical constraints on the plasma-physics models used to interpret the data and enable experimental measurements of the electron-velocity distribution function over several orders of magnitude without assumptions about its mathematical form. Major components of the instrument include (1) a reflective collection objective that gathers light over a range of 120° × 12°; (2) a spatial-filter image relay for measurement localization; (3) cylindrical optics for producing a line image of the collection aperture; (4) a transmission grating spectrometer; and (5) a time-gated, image-intensified camera. Thomson-scattered light collected from an ~(50 – μM) 3 volume of plasma is recorded with 0.8-nm spectral and 1° angular resolution. Initial experiments examined the properties of the electron-velocity distribution in gas-jet-produced plasmas in the presence of heating via inverse bremsstrahlung absorption.

Fisheries resource identification and assessment studies

Program coordination activities were shifted from the Space Oceanography Program of NAVOCEANO to the National Environmental Satellite Service as part of NOAA in October 1970. Program activities in remote sensing continued in the development of low-light-level image intensifiers, spectrometers, aerial photography, and lasers for the location, identification, and quantification of living marine resources at or near the sea surface. Other studies included the development of a biologically controlled impoundment for remote sensor investigations and limited activities in fish oil film research. In addition to these remote sensing studies, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) program at the Mississippi Test Facility is participating in space oceanography studies related to fisheries and in the ERTS-A and Skylab experiments. Aspects of the NMFS program related to fisheries resource identification and assessment during the period 1970 and 1971 are discussed.

Research study on stellar X-ray imaging experiment, volume 1

The use of microchannel plates as focal plane readout devices and the evaluation of mirrors for X-ray telescopes applied to stellar X-ray imaging is discussed. The microchannel plate outputs were either imaged on a phosphor screen which was viewed by a low light level vidicon or on a wire array which was read out by digitally processing the output of a charge division network attached to the wires. A service life test which was conducted on two image intensifiers is described.

An investigation and conceptual design of a holographic starfield and landmark tracker

The analysis, experiments, and design effort of this study have supported the feasibility of the basic holographic tracker concept. Image intensifiers and photoplastic recording materials were examined, along with a Polaroid rapid process silver halide material. Two reference beam, coherent optical matched filter technique was used for multiplexing spatial frequency filters for starfields. A 1 watt HeNe laser and an electro-optical readout are also considered.

Photon counting with a self-scanned diode array.

A self-scanned diode array may be used as temporary storage for individual photons if enough gain is provided by an image intensifier or electron multiplier to provide a detectable signal from each input event.

Observations of comet Kohoutek (1973f)

The coma region Comet Kohoutek (1973f) was observed with a 40-mm proximity focused image intensifier tube and filters to isolate principal emissions. The low brightness of the comet limited the results, but it was possible to compare the intensity profiles of C2 and continuum in the coma. It appears that Comet Kohoutek was a typical comet in that it did not exhibit unusual coma structure similar to that of Comet Bennet. Photographs taken with the 42 cm Schmidt showed typical type 1, type, 2 and antitail morphology, with increased type 2 activity after perihelion passage. A technique for eliminating the type 2 (dust) component of the tail is given by means of photographic subtraction of blue and red sensitive layers of a color photograph.

Negative affinity X-ray photocathodes

A new X-ray image intensifier is described. The device should eventually have a quantum efficiency which is an order of magnitude greater than that of presently available high spatial resolution X-ray detectors, such as microchannel plates. The new intesifier is based upon a GaAs crystal photocathode which is activated to achieve negative electron affinity. Details concerning the detector concept are discussed together with the theoretical relations involved, X-ray data, and optical data.

Shuttle sortie electro-optical instruments study

A study to determine the feasibility of adapting existing electro-optical instruments (designed and sucessfully used for ground operations) for use on a shuttle sortie flight and to perform satisfactorily in the space environment is considered. The suitability of these two instruments (a custom made image intensifier camera system and an off-the-shelf secondary electron conduction television camera) to support a barium ion cloud experiment was studied for two different modes of spacelab operation - within the pressurized module and on the pallet.

Photography and photometry of the near infrared OH airglow

The instruments employed in the investigation were modified for aircraft use primarily by automating the repetitive measurements and incorporating image intensifier tubes to reduce exposure times. The instruments include a 35-mm camera, an absolutely calibrated photometer, and a 16-mm movie camera. The data obtained will be used in a study of the variation of parallax emission heights with geographical location, and the relationship of OH patch or stripe size to emission height.

Photon-counting detector arrays based on microchannel array plates

The recent development of the channel electron multiplier (CEM) and its miniaturization into the microchannel array plate (MCP) offers the possibility of fully combining the advantages of the photographic and photoelectric detection systems. The MCP has an image-intensifying capability and the potential of being developed to yield signal outputs superior to those of conventional photomultipliers. In particular, the MCP has a photon-counting capability with a negligible dark-count rate. Furthermore, the MCP can operate stably and efficiently at extreme-ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths in a windowless configuration or can be integrated with a photo-cathode in a sealed tube for use at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. The operation of one- and two-dimensional photon-counting detector arrays based on the MCP at extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths is described, and the design of sealed arrays for use at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths is briefly discussed.

Engineering design criteria for an image intensifier/image converter camera

The design, display, and evaluation of an image intensifier/image converter camera which can be utilized in various requirements of spaceshuttle experiments are described. An image intensifier tube was utilized in combination with two brassboards as power supply and used for evaluation of night photography in the field. Pictures were obtained showing field details which would have been undistinguishable to the naked eye or to an ordinary camera.
