Automatically operable self-leveling load table

A self-leveling load table is described which is automatically maintained level by selectively opening and closing solenoid valves for inserting and removing air from chambers under the table. The table is floated in a fluid by nine air chambers beneath the top of the table. These chambers are open at the bottom and four oppositely located chambers are used for leveling the table by having the air increased or decreased by means of a flexible hose. Air bearing pendulums are used for selectively energizing solenoid valves which either apply pressurized air to the chamber or evacuate air from the chamber by means of a vacuum source.

Skylab program. Earth resources experiment package. Sensor performance report. Volume 7 (S190B): SL2, SL3 and SL4 evaluations

The S190B Earth Terrain Camera (ETC) operated acceptably for all of its scheduled EREP passes throughout the SL2 mission. The crew reported no problems in unstowing the camera, changing filters, installing the ETC window in the SAL, or installing the camera onto the window. The ETC was operated for a total of seven times with no failures. The clock on the ETC was checked on DOY 170 (June 19, 1973) and was found to be 30 min. and 58 sec. slower than GMT. The change in time was expected since a similar circumstance was experienced during ETC qualification testing for launch vibration. A leak existed in the seal of the spare magazine to the camera vacuum interface. For EREP passes 08 and 10, black-and-white film EK 3414 (roll no. 82) was installed in this spare magazine. Since there was an audible hiss, the vacuum hose was not connected to the camera. This caused the vacuum platen to be inoperable, resulting in some degradation in resolution for this roll of film. The vegetation of the South American jungle areas proved to be much darker than vegetation found in the United States, and was consequently about 1/2 stop underexposed in all cases.

Space Shuttle Tail Service Mast Concept Verification

Design studies and analyses were performed to describe the loads and dynamics of the space shuttle tail service masts (TSMs). Of particular interest are the motion and interaction of the umbilical carrier plate, lanyard system, vacuum jacketed hoses, latches, links, and masthead. A development test rig was designed and fabricated to obtain experimental data. The test program is designed to (1) verify the theoretical dynamics calculations, (2) prove the soundness of design concepts, and (3) elucidate problem areas (if any) in the design of mechanisms and structural components. Design, fabrication, and initiation of TSM development testing at Kennedy Space Center are described.

Anomalous composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays below 20 MeV/nucleon

The relative abundances and energy spectra of C, N, O, Ne, and Fe are investigated as a function of the interplanetary low energy proton intensity using observations obtained over a 17-month period by IMP-8. The oxygen intensity was enhanced when proton activity was at its lowest level, while all other heavy elements almost disappeared. Nuclei of less than 3 MeV/nucleon showed a strong intensity fluctuation strongly correlated with the interplanetary proton flux and displayed a velocity anisotropy along the garden-hose angle, indicating that they are of solar origin. The anomalous oxygen hump between 3 and 20 MeV is apparently not of solar origin. The observations are compatible with the model proposed by Fisk et al. (1974), in which these oxygen nuclei are considered to be interstellar neutral oxygen atoms which are ionized and accelerated to the observed energies by magnetic field irregularities in the outer solar system.

The time and spatial behavior of solar flare proton anisotropies observed in deep space on Pioneers 10 and 11

The anisotropy of solar flare protons from the direction of the 'garden hose' magnetic field line has been analyzed for 24 events observed by the University of Chicago experiment on Pioneers 10 and 11 in 1972 and 1973. The anisotropy versus time profiles during individual events are in general consistent with diffusive propagation, but several cases are observed where the decay is better described by an exponential time decay. The anisotropy amplitude evaluated at the time of maximum intensity for each event shows evidence for a gradual decrease with increasing distance from the sun which is qualitatively consistent with diffusive propagation and suggests that the effective interplanetary diffusion coefficient parallel to the magnetic field increases slowly with heliocentric distance.

Quick-disconnect coupling/filter

Two-part coupling system for hose lines combines both connection and filter in one fitting. Flared fittings make coupling less prone to leakage, and reduced number of components speeds operation. These features may make coupler useful with liquid-bulk carriers, where materials (e.g., milk, cooking oil, and liquid sugar) must be transferred quickly from vehicle to storage facility.

Coal as a Substitute for Carbon Black

New proposal shows sprayed coal powder formed by extrusion of coal heated to plastic state may be inexpensive substitute for carbon black. Carbon black is used extensively in rubber industry as reinforcing agent in such articles as tires and hoses. It is made from natural gas and petroleum, both of which are in short supply.

Underground mineral extraction

A method was developed for extracting underground minerals such as coal, which avoids the need for sending personnel underground and which enables the mining of steeply pitched seams of the mineral. The method includes the use of a narrow vehicle which moves underground along the mineral seam and which is connected by pipes or hoses to water pumps at the surface of the Earth. The vehicle hydraulically drills pilot holes during its entrances into the seam, and then directs sideward jets at the seam during its withdrawal from each pilot hole to comminute the mineral surrounding the pilot hole and combine it with water into a slurry, so that the slurried mineral can flow to a location where a pump raises the slurry to the surface.

Propagation of sound through the Earth's atmosphere. 1: Measurement of sound absorption in the air: 2: Measurement of ground impedance

Parts were fabricated for the acoustic ground impedance meter and the instrument was tested. A rubber hose was used to connect the resonator neck to the chamber in order to suppress vibration from the volume velocity source which caused chatter. An analog to digital converter was successfully hardwired to the computer detection system. The cooling system for the resonant tube was modified to use liquid nitrogen cooling. This produced the required temperature for the tube, but the temperature gradients within each of the four tube sections reached unacceptable levels. Final measurements of the deexcitation of nitrogen by water vapor indicate that the responsible physical process is not the direct vibration-translation energy transfer, but is a vibration-vibration energy transfer.

Temperature anisotropy instabilities driven by Whang's ion model

The behavior of four temperature anisotropy instabilities in a single-component space plasma is investigated theoretically using the solar wind model (i.e., heat flux modified non-Maxwellian velocity distribution functions) proposed by Whang (1972). The linear dispersion properties are studied in an infinite Vlasov plasma where the proton distribution is assumed to consist of one warm slow-speed component and where the electron background is isotropic. It is shown that the fire hose, mirror, and Harris instability do not occur under these conditions, and that only the ion cyclotron instability is of importance in Whang's ion model. Growth rates are shown to have values between 0.021 and 0.00011. Increasing temperature anisotropy causes the range frequencies where wave particle interaction occurs to be shifted toward the ion gyrofrequency.

Modeling of interaction of artificially released lithium with the earth's bow shock

A numerical simulation is used to predict the interaction between the earth's bow shock and lithium to be released in the solar wind during the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers program in 1984. Based on the simulation results for a release near the subsolar point, it is recommended that a favorable release condition is when the garden-hose angle of the interplanetary magnetic field exceeds about 60 to 70 deg so that the transmission of Li(+) ions through the bow shock is optimized. The model also predicts that the Li(+) is 'shock-drift' accelerated at the bow shock. The energy gain of Li(+) ions is on the average less for the transmitted particles (below a factor of about 4) than for the reflected particles (below a factor of about 16).

Magnetopause merging site asymmetries

Regions where a draped model magnetosheath magnetic field is nearly antiparallel to a model geomagnetic field are shown to be asymmetric for an interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) at the garden hose angle, as suggested by Heelis. When the IMF has a southward component, the asymmetry favors the dawn region for both IMF polarities. The dusk region is favored when the IMF has a northward component. If the regions of antiparallel fields are assumed to be sites of maximum magnetic merging, then the asymmetry is consistent with observed seasonal variations of geomagnetic activity and with dawn-displaced magnetospheric phenomena. In the alternate merging geometry of a line passing through the subsolar region, the asymmetry is predominantly north-south rather than dawn-dusk. Merging line geometry is consistent with the seasonal variations but not with the dawn-displaced phenomena.

The effects of interplanetary magnetic field orientation on dayside high-latitude ionospheric convection

The Atmosphere Explorer C data base of Northern Hemisphere ionospheric convection signatures at high latitudes is examined during times when the interplanetary magnetic field orientation is relatively stable. It is found that when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has its expected garden hose orientation, the center of a region where the ion flow rotates from sunward to antisunward is displaced from local noon toward dawn irrespective of the sign of By. Poleward of this rotation region, called the cleft, the ion convection is directed toward dawn or dusk depending on whether By is positive or negative, respectively. The observed flow geometry can be explained in terms of a magnetosphere solar wind interaction in which merging is favored in either the prenoon Northern Hemisphere or the prenoon Southern Hemisphere when the IMF has a normal sector structure that is toward or away, respectively.

Effect of reduction of strategic Columbium addition in 718 Alloy on the structure and properties

A series of alloys was developed having a base composition similar to Inconel 718, with reduced Cb levels of 3.00 and 1.10 wt% Cb. Substitutions of 3.0% W, 3.0W + 0.9V or Mo increased from 3.0% to 5.8% were made for the Cb in these alloys. Two additional alloys, one containing 3.49% Cb and 1.10% Ti and another containing 3.89% Cb and 1.29% Ti were also studied. Tensile properties at rooom and elevated temperatures, stress-rupture tests, and an analysis of extracted phases were carried out for each of the alloys. Additions of solid solution elements to a reduced Cb alloy had no significant effect on the properties of the alloys under either process condition. The solution and age alloys with substitutions of 1.27% i at 3.89% Cb had tensile properties similar top hose of the original alloy and stress-rupture properties superior to the original alloy. The improved stress-rupture properties were the result of significant precipitation of Ni3Ti-gamma prime in the alloy, which is more stable than gamma' at the elevated temperatures. At lower temperatures, the new alloy benefits from gamma' strengthening. With more precise control and proper processing, the reduced Cb direct-age alloy could substitute for Alloy 718 in high strength applications.
