LANL Institutional Computing Highlight: Local Time-Stepping in Global to Regional Ocean Modeling (Annual Report) [Slides]

Multi-resolution global ocean simulations are possible with the Model for Prediction Across Scales-Ocean (MPAS-Ocean), although the model is currently constrained to a uniform time step. The time step is determined by the size of the smallest cell in the grid, according to the CFL condition. To overcome this issue, a local time stepping (LTS) scheme has been designed for MPAS-Ocean. We have made progress on implementing the LTS scheme, as well as quantitative results and performance tests.

Reasons to read this book (hint: it’ll help your weapons research) Q and A with author highlights Lab’s collections, importance of early weapons work

Michael Bernardin’s retirement actually looks a little more like a second career. This one, though, as an author of books. Bernardin retired last year after 35 years as a nuclear physicist that culminated with his role as the Associate Lab Director for Weapons Physics. Since then, he’s continued accessing the collections of the National Security Research Center, which is the Lab’s classified library.

The Tiny Heater: Creating Heat with Hybrid Nano-Antennas [LDRD HQ Highlights Article]

SRNL scientists demonstrate that an electromagnetic field, either as a light or magnetic field, is selectively coupled to shape-selective hybrid nano-antennas for efficient thermal processes. Localized heating occurs extremely fast, reducing the ‘wasted' thermal load on the environment. Being non-contact, efficient, and highly selective, the required input energy is greatly diminished. By strategically placing nano-antennas at desired locations, heat can be controlled at the nano-level. The location for nano-antennas, and the subsequent energy deposition, may be fine-tuned through specific chemical, steric, or magnetic interactions. The nano-antennas, composed of combinations of plasmonic, magnetic, and hydride components, are used for controlled release of hydrogen isotopes, chemotherapy drugs, environmental contaminants, enhanced catalytic processes, (bio)imaging and therapeutics.

Operational and Mission Highlights: A Monthly Summary of Top Achievements September 2021

Laboratory personnel working on a years-long Confinement Vessel Disposition (CVD) Project at the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) facility recently shipped its first vessel after closing the emptying and dispositioning portion of the project in 2020. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Laboratory conducted experiments that produced data used in computer modeling. Scientists used these models to evaluate the performance of nuclear weapons.

October 2021 Operational Highlights

Accessioned 254 boxes of weapons-production-related records from the shuttered Denver Federal Records Center into the NSRC’s Rocky Flats collections. An additional 4,000 weapons testing documents have been uploaded with metadata onto the Lab’s classified online repository called the Online Vault. As a result, approximately 50 percent of the field testing collection is now available electronically.

Safety Applications Project FY20-21 Highlights, FY2022 Goals [Slides]

Collaborations leverage the investment and expertise of others. Code capabilities determine the questions that can be addressed using SAP tools. Infrastructure acts as a force multiplier for software developer skills. Improved code performance allows simulations to finish faster or with greater fidelity. Code performance has dramatically improved over the past ~4 years.

Operational and Mission Highlights: A Monthly Summary of Top Achievements October 2021

Working with the Design Agency (Q-6), Production Agency Quality (PAQ) Division, and the NNSA Los Alamos Field Office, Detonator Production recently sold Lot 3354 to NNSA. Detonator Production personnel shipped the lot to Pantex — the Laboratory will continue to support the W76 into the future. The sale and shipment of Lot 3354 was accomplished before the closeout of FY21, achieving a key milestone that required active participation from several stakeholders within the Lab, as well as organizations external to the Laboratory. Both organizations found remedies to address challenges associated with this lot that had persisted since 2019.

November 2021 Operational Highlights

Completed: 1. the initial tests of document workflows for Titan on the Red, which included standing up a software encryption capability to test data ingestion; 2. a software encryption capability in order to ingest the first data source by the end of the month; 3. a stand-alone computer for classified ontology data entry. Titan on the Red is an artificial intelligence/machine learning system to make digitizing, cataloging, and searching NSRC collections easier and more efficient. Created Online Vault backups, with one copy stored at LANL and one shipped to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Online Vault is a classified, searchable library of LANL’s nuclear weapons design and test history. Imported new Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) documents based on revised access categories. Bulk ingested nearly 10,000 documents via java-based PowerLoader. This application ingests metadata and content into the Online Vault to meet the requirements for the NSRC collections. Rehoused 300 linear feet of weapons physics documents in archival, acid-free storage folders and boxes.

Z-Petawatt Laser Highlights for FY21

We’re happy to report that the full-aperture upgrade project, started in FY18, is now complete and short-pulse target experiments are underway. The table below lists the present performance level of ZPW. Additional laser improvements are in progress to increase the laser energy and pulse contrast along with implementing a correction for achromatic aberrations to reduce the focused spot size and pulse width.

ALDWP Operational Highlights 2021

The Weapons Pit production manufacturing team completed pit build 21-1 assembly operations on December 23, 2020. This build utilized all essential flow sheet steps and included the second -01 long tube cut off extension and welding activity. This is the best build produced in the MC4597-01 pit program to date. Final out-of-line operations, non-destructive evaluation, and radiography was completed during the week of January 4. Depending on the results from high energy radiography, this pit will be considered to be a candidate for CERT-02 and shipment to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in support of pit certification. It is notable that this build was completed while concurrently making Plutonium (Pu) metal, producing additional castings, machining Pu parts for Build 22, completing disassembly of two pits, supporting Nightshade B Pu target characterization, and precision machining of Jasper certification base plates.
