Inverse Trans Influence and Uranium-Arene σ-Bonding Drive Molecular Geometry: Ligand Modification from Hard to Soft Flips the Oxide from Axial to Equatorial

A rare example of an equatorially bound terminal uranium(V) oxo complex in a chelating sulfur-based ligand environment, namely [(mes( Me,Ad ArS) 3 )U V (O eq )(THF)] (2), is presented. Octahedrally coordinated 2 is obtained by reaction of the mesitylene-anchored tris-thiophenolate-coordinated uranium(III) complex [U III ((SAr Ad,Me ) 3 mes)] (1) with the oxygen-atom transfer reagent N 2 O. The observed, equatorially bound oxo ligand in 2 is in stark contrast to its known tris-aryloxide analog, [(mes( Me,Ad ArO) 3 )U V (O ax )(THF)] (A), where the oxo ligand occupies the typically observed axial coordination site. Complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and spectroscopic and magnetochemical methods, including 1 H NMR, UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption, as well as EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry, thus confirming the C S symmetry and the pentavalent oxidation state of 2. Encompassing quantum chemical calculations (DFT and CASPT2) on 2 and its tris-phenolate analog A, support and rationalize the structural and electronic differences. The molecular orbital pictures show that a stabilizing σ-bonding interaction arising from the U–O eq inverse trans influence (ITI) is present in 2 but missing in A. In 2, the sulfur 3p orbitals are closer in energy to the uranium 5f manifold than the arene π-system, leading to an ITI, while U–arene σ- or δ-bonding is not observed. Although the arene orbitals remain separated from the uranium 5f orbitals in A, the absence of an ITI allows the arene a 2u orbital to engage in a σ-type interaction with the metal. Thus, incorporating a tris-thiophenolate to an arene anchor introduces a new design concept in molecular f-element chemistry. This approach stabilizes an equatorially bound U(V) oxo center, contrasting with its tris-phenolate counterpart, where oxo coordination is axial. The observed geometric divergence, driven by competing ITI and U–arene interactions, not only tunes electronic structure but also leads to differentiated reactivity: only the phenolate analogs activate H 2 O, while the thiolates do not.

Radiative forcing from the 2020 shipping fuel regulation is large but hard to detect

Reduction in aerosol cooling unmasks greenhouse gas warming, exacerbating the rate of future warming. The strict sulfur regulation on shipping fuel implemented in 2020 (IMO2020) presents an opportunity to assess the potential impacts of such emission regulations and the detectability of deliberate aerosol perturbations for climate intervention. Here we employ machine learning to capture cloud natural variability and estimate a radiative forcing of +0.074 ±0.005 W m -2 related to IMO2020 associated with changes in shortwave cloud radiative effect over three low-cloud regions where shipping routes prevail. We find low detectability of the cloud radiative effect of this event, attributed to strong natural variability in cloud albedo and cloud cover. Regionally, detectability is higher for the southeastern Atlantic stratocumulus deck. These results raise concerns that future reductions in aerosol emissions will accelerate warming and that proposed deliberate aerosol perturbations such as marine cloud brightening will need to be substantial in order to overcome the low detectability.

Advances in Operando Electrocatalysis with High-Resolution Hard X-Ray Spectroscopy

Electrocatalysis unfolds at the interface—where solids, liquids, and gases meet to exchange charge, transform molecules, and set the foundation for technologies like CO 2 conversion, and water splitting. These interfacial regions are inherently dynamic, chemically diverse, and structurally heterogeneous. How atoms rearrange, oxidize, coordinate ligands, or adsorb reaction intermediates under electro-chemical potential defines a catalyst’s performance. Furthermore, capturing these changes with element specificity and electronic sensitivity under operando conditions remains one of the most critical challenges in the field.

Role of mechanical stress localizations on the radiation hardness of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors

Multi-material, multi-layered systems such as AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) contain residual mechanical stresses that arise from sharp contrasts in device geometry and materials parameters. These stresses, which can be either tensile or compressive, are difficult to detect and eliminate because of their highly localized nature. We propose that their high-stored internal energy makes potential sites for defect nucleation sites under radiation, particularly if their locations coincide with the electrically sensitive regions of a transistor. In this study, we validate this hypothesis with molecular dynamic simulation and experiments exposing both pristine and annealed HEMTS to 2.8 MeV Au +3 irradiation. Our unique annealing process uses mechanical momentum of electrons, also known as the electron wind force (EWF) to mitigate the residual stress at room temperature. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence spectra reveal the reduction of point defects and dislocations near the two-dimensional electron gas region of EWF-treated devices compared to pristine devices. The EWF-treated HEMTs showed relatively higher resilience with approximately 10% less degradation of drain saturation current and ON-resistance and 5% less degradation of peak transconductance. Both mobility and carrier concentration of the EWF-treated devices were less impacted compared to the pristine devices. Our results suggest that the lower density of nanoscale stress localization contributed to the improved radiation tolerance of the EWF-treated devices. Intriguingly, the EWF is found to modulate the defect distribution by moving the defects to electrically less sensitive regions in the form of dislocation networks, which act as sinks for the radiation induced defects and this assisted faster dynamic annealing.

Hardness of Observing Strong-to-Weak Symmetry Breaking

Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is the cornerstone of our understanding of quantum phases of matter. Recent works have generalized this concept to the domain of mixed states in open quantum systems, where symmetries can be realized in two distinct ways dubbed strong and weak. Novel intrinsically mixed phases of quantum matter can then be defined by the spontaneous breaking of strong symmetry down to weak symmetry. However, proposed order parameters for strong-to-weak SSB (based on mixed-state fidelities or purities) seem to require exponentially many copies of the state, raising the question: Is it possible to efficiently detect strong-to-weak SSB, in general? In this work, we answer this question negatively in the paradigmatic cases of ℤ2 and U(1) symmetries. We construct ensembles of pseudorandom mixed states that do not break the strong symmetry yet are computationally indistinguishable from states that do. This rules out the existence of efficient state-agnostic protocols to detect strong-to-weak SSB.

3D imaging of magnetic domains in Nd 2 Fe 14 B using scanning hard X-ray nanotomography

Nanoscale structural and electronic heterogeneities are prevalent in condensed matter physics. Investigating these heterogeneities in 3D has become an important task for understanding material properties. To provide a tool to unravel the connection between nanoscale heterogeneity and macroscopic emergent properties in magnetic materials, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is combined with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A vector tomography algorithm has been developed to reconstruct the full 3D magnetic vector field without any prior noise assumptions or knowledge about the sample. Two tomographic scans around the vertical axis are acquired on single-crystalline Nd 2 Fe 14 B pillars tilted at two different angles, with 2D STXM projections recorded using a focused 120 nm X-ray beam with left and right circular polarization. Image alignment and iterative registration have been implemented based on the 2D STXM projections for the two tilts. Dichroic projections obtained from difference images are used for the tomographic reconstruction to obtain the 3D magnetization distribution at the nanoscale.

Modeling wiggler with hard edge dipoles

Wigglers and undulators are used as devices for generating synchrotron radiation. They are also used for modification of various beam properties circulating in a storage ring. Basic ‘dumping wiggler’ is used for change of the damping time, equilibrium emittance, and energy spread. In damping wigglers are used to increase the damping rate of the energy spread induced by the beam-beam interaction. The commonly used MAD and Elegant software has only simplified planar wiggler configuration and no model for a helical wiggler.

Bypassing Fast Time Scales of the Hodgkin-Huxley Neuron Model via a Thresholded Hard Reset

We propose a modification to the Hodgkin-Huxley model to reduce the numerical stiffness of the equations by introducing an explicit voltage threshold. When this threshold is crossed, the voltage and the gating variables are reset to constant values. It is found that, for all of the current stimuli considered, the proposed model accurately reproduces the behavior of the baseline Hodgkin-Huxley model while bypassing the fast dynamics of spiking. Specifically, the model accurately reproduces the spike times and, between spikes, the time courses of the membrane potential and gating variables.
