Study of ${B}_c^{+}$ meson decays to charmonia plus multihadron final states

Four decay modes of the ${B}_c^{+}$ meson into a J/ψ meson and multiple charged kaons or pions are studied using proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The decay ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψK + K - π + π + π - is observed for the first time, and evidence for the ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψ4π + 3π - decay is found. The decay ${B}_c^{+}$ → J/ψ3π + 2π - is observed and the previous observation of the ${B}_c^{+}$ → ψ(2S)π + π + π - decay is confirmed using the ψ(2S) → J/ψπ + π - decay mode. Ratios of the branching fractions of these four ${B}_c^{+}$ decay channels are measured.

Hybrid analysis of radiative corrections to neutron decay with current algebra and effective field theory

We introduce a useful framework for high-precision studies of the neutron beta decay by merging the current algebra description and the fixed-order effective field theory calculation of the electroweak radiative corrections to the neutron axial form factor. We discuss the advantages of this hybrid method and show that it only requires a minimal amount of lattice QCD inputs to achieve a 10 –4 theory accuracy for the Standard Model prediction of the neutron lifetime and the axial-to-vector coupling ratio λ, both important to the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Lattice QCD calculation of the pion distribution amplitude with domain wall fermions at physical pion mass

We present a direct lattice QCD calculation of the x-dependence of the pion distribution amplitude (DA), which is performed using the quasi-DA in large momentum effective theory on a domain-wall fermion ensemble at physical quark masses and spacing a ≈ 0.084 fm. The bare quais-DA matrix elements are renormalized in the hybrid scheme and matched to $\overline{MS}$ with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. For the first time, we include threshold resummation in the perturbative matching onto the light-cone DA, which resums the large logarithms in the soft gluon limit at next-to-next-to-leading log. The resummed results show controlled scale-variation uncertainty within the range of momentum fraction x ϵ [0.25, 0.75] at the largest pion momentum P z ≈ 1.85 GeV. In addition, we apply the same analysis to quasi-DAs from a highly-improved-staggered-quark ensemble at physical pion mass and a = 0.076 fm. By comparison we find with 2σ confidence level that the DA obtained from chiral fermions is flatter and lower near x = 0.5.

Search for CP violation in the phase space of D 0 → π⁻π⁺π 0 decays with the energy test

A search for CP violation in D 0 → π - π + π 0 decays is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local CP violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel D 0 → K - π + π 0 and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in this decay.

Quarkonium transport in weakly and strongly coupled plasmas

We report on progress in the nonperturbative understanding of quarkonium dynamics inside a thermal plasma. The time evolution of small-size quarkonium is governed by two-point correlation functions of chromoelectric fields dressed with an adjoint Wilson line, known in this context as generalized gluon distributions (GGDs). The GGDs have been calculated in both weakly and strongly coupled plasmas by using perturbative and holographic methods. Strikingly, the results of our calculations for a strongly coupled plasma indicate that the quarkonium dissociation and recombination rates vanish in the transport descriptions that assume quarkonium undergoes Markovian dynamics. However, this does not imply that the dynamics is trivial. As a starting point to explore the phenomenological consequences of the result at strong coupling, we show a calculation of the Y(1 S ) formation probability in time-dependent perturbation theory. This is a first step towards the development of a transport formalism that includes non-Markovian effects, which, depending on how close the as of yet undetermined nonperturbative QCD result of the GGDs is to the strongly coupled N = 4 SYM result, could very well dominate over the Markovian ones in quark-gluon plasma produced at RHIC and the LHC.

Backward-Angle Electroproduction of η′ Mesons off Protons at W = 2.13 GeV and Q 2 = 0.46 (GeV/ c ) 2

The electroproduction of $\eta ^{\prime }$ mesons from a $\mathrm{^{1}H}$ target at $W=\mathrm{2.13~GeV}$, $Q^{2} = 0.46~\left( \mathrm{GeV/}c\right)^{2}$, and $\cos \theta ^{\mathrm{CM}}_{\gamma ^{*}\eta ^{\prime }} \approx -1$ has been experimentally measured. The differential cross section of virtual photoproduction has been obtained as $4.4 \pm 0.8 ~\left( \mathrm{stat.} \right) \pm 0.4 ~\left( \mathrm{sys.} \right)~ \mathrm{nb/sr}$ in the One-Photon-Exchange Approximation. This value is one-sixth of that of real photoproduction at backward angles. A comparison with newly developed isobar model calculations not only shows the validity of the theoretical framewark employed, but also imposes new constraints on coupling strength between the $\eta ^{\prime }p$ final state and nucleon resonances.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in 𝜙⁡(1020) → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$ photoproduction with a linearly polarized photon beam at 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2–8.8 GeV

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) for the photoproduction of 𝜙⁡(1020) off of the proton in its decay to 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝐾$^{0}_{𝐿}$, using 105 pb −1 of data collected with a linearly polarized photon beam using the GlueX experiment. The SDMEs are measured in nine bins of the squared four-momentum transfer 𝑡 in the range −𝑡=0.15−1.0 GeV 2 , providing the first measurement of their 𝑡 dependence for photon beam energies of 𝐸 𝛾 = 8.2−8.8 GeV. We confirm the dominance of Pomeron exchange in this region and put constraints on the contribution of other Regge exchanges. We also find that helicity amplitudes where the helicity of the photon and 𝜙⁡(1020) differ by two units are negligible.

First measurement of direct photoproduction of the a 2 (1320) 0 meson on the proton

We present the first measurement of the reaction γ p → a 2 ( 1320 ) 0 p in the photon energy range 3.5– 5.5 Ge V and four-momentum transfer squared 0.2 < - t < 2.0 Ge V 2 . Data were collected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The a 2 resonance was detected by measuring the reaction γ p → π 0 η p and reconstructing the π 0 η invariant mass. The most prominent feature of the differential cross section is a dip at -t ≈ 0.55 Ge V 2 . This can be described in the framework of Regge phenomenology, where the exchange degeneracy hypothesis predicts a zero in the reaction amplitude for this value of the four-momentum transfer.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV using π 0 production

The PHENIX Collaboration presents a systematic study of inclusive π 0 production from p + p , p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0–100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0–100% collisions, the nuclear-modification factors, R x A , are consistent with unity for p T above 8 GeV / c , but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high- p T - π 0 production, the nucleons in the d and He 3 interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counterintuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower p T resemble the Cronin effect—an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as p + Au > d + Au > He 3 + Au > p + Al . For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial-state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower p T .

Measurement of φ-meson production in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of φ-meson production in asymmetric Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the φ → K + K – decay channel at midrapidity |η| < 0.35. Features of φ- meson production measured in Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the φ meson in Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$ , φ-meson production measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Finally, the elliptic flow for φ mesons measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is well described by a (2+1)-dimensional viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s = 1/4π.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in ρ ( 770 ) production with a linearly polarized photon beam at E γ = 8.2 – 8.8 GeV

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson rho(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. Here we confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced rho(770) differ by two units are negligible for -t<0.5GeV 2 /c 2 .

Nonprompt direct-photon production in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The measurement of the direct-photon spectrum from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is presented by the PHENIX Collaboration using the external-photon-conversion technique for 0%–93% central collisions in a transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) range of 0.8–10 GeV/𝑐. An excess of direct photons, above prompt-photon production from hard-scattering processes, is observed for 𝑝 𝑇 < 6 GeV/𝑐. Nonprompt direct photons are measured by subtracting the prompt component, which is estimated as 𝑁 coll -scaled direct photons from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at 200 GeV, from the direct-photon spectrum. Results are obtained for 0.8 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 6.0 GeV/𝑐 and suggest that the spectrum has an increasing inverse slope from ≈0.2 to 0.4 GeV/𝑐 with increasing 𝑝 𝑇 , which indicates a possible sensitivity of the measurement to photons from earlier stages of the evolution of the collision. In addition, like the direct-photon production, the 𝑝 𝑇 -integrated nonprompt direct-photon yields also follow a power-law scaling behavior as a function of collision-system size. Finally, the exponent, 𝛼, for the nonprompt component is found to be consistent with 1.1 with no apparent 𝑝 𝑇 dependence.

Photoproduction of the Σ + hyperon using linearly polarized photons with CLAS

Measurements of the polarization observables Σ, P, T, O x , O z for the reaction $\vec{γ}$ p → $K^0_S$Σ + using a linearly polarized photon beam of energy 1.1 to 2.1 GeV are reported. The measured data provide information on a channel that has not been studied extensively, but is required for a full coupled-channel analysis in the nucleon resonance region. Observables have been simultaneously extracted using likelihood sampling with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo process. Angular distributions in bins of photon energy E γ are produced for each polarization observable. T, O x , and O z are first time measurements of these observables in this reaction. The extraction of Σ extends the energy range beyond a previous measurement. The measurement of P, the recoil polarization, is consistent with previous measurements. The measured data are shown to be significant enough to affect the estimation of the nucleon resonance parameters when fitted within a coupled-channels model.

Quark flavor balancing in nuclear collisions

The notion of charge balance function, originally designed to study the evolution of charge production in heavy-ion collisions, is extended to consider quark flavor balancing. This extension is considered based on simulations performed with the PYTHIA 8 event generator in the context of pp collisions at √𝑠 = 13.6, 7, and 2.76 TeV but can be trivially applied to any other scenario and implemented in measurements of correlated particle production in pp, pA, and AA collisions at colliders. Correlation of selected flavor balancing pairs is examined as a function of the produced charged particle multiplicity. One finds that the amplitude of the correlations increases monotonically with the number of balanced flavors and the actual flavor content of correlated particles.
