We report on the simulation of temperature gradients in tamped NaFMgO target-foil plasma, heated and backlit by z-pinch dynamic hohlraum radiation. Our approach compares the spectroscopic output of a collisional-radiative model (prismspect) with soft X-ray absorption spectra collected on Sandia National Laboratories’ (SNL) Z Pulsed Power Facility. The pattern of minimum χ2 is seen to agree with an efficient, three-parameter model. Results show that a negligible gradient in electron temperature Te is consistent with experimental data, justifying the assumptions of previous work. The predicted sensitivity of line spectra to the gradient-aligned profile of Te is documented for each spectral feature, so that the line-area ratio between a pair of spectral features may be assessed as a proxy for the existence and quantification of such gradients.

Compared to most other Yamato polymict eucrites, Yamato Y792769 eucrite includes fewer and smaller eucritic clasts with homogenized pyroxenes, and its fine-grained matrix is shock-compacted and sintered. In this work, the relationships between the Antarctic eucrite Y792769, monomict eucrites, polymict eucrites, and isotopic ages are investigated, using results of Ar-39/Ar-40 method to date the time of the major thermal event on the Y792769 body and the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd methods to determine whether relict older ages might have been preserved in some of the breccia materials. The Ar-39/Ar-40 time of the last thermal event which produced the Y792769 texture is 3.99 +/- 0.04 Ga. The complete resetting of the Ar-39/Ar-40 age is consistent with the texture of Y792769 observed in TEM, suggesting that shock compaction converted part of the matrix plagioclase to maskelynite. The Sm-Nd data give an age of 4.23 +/- 0.12 Ga, reflecting partial resetting of the Sm-Nd system during breccia formation. The 3.9 Ga Ar-39/Ar-40 age probably reflects a period of intense meteoroid bompardment which affected the entire inner solar system.
The magnetic properties of extraterrestrial materials, in particular natural remanent magnetization (NRM), is a potentially useful study for detecting ancient Solar System magnetic fields and for elucidating meteorite evolutionary processes. Results are presented for the following: howardites--Kapoeta, Petersburg, Le Teilleul, and EET 87503; eucrites--Sioux County and Millbillillie; and diogenites--Shalka and Johnstown. Significant features of their magnetism are within-sample in homogeneity of NRM directions in several of the meteorites and within-sample uniformity of axes of an isotropy of magnetic susceptibility. Both these phenomena bear on the meteorites' evolution and the timing of the magnetization process.
One of the most important elements of a human planetary base is power production. Lunar data make it clear that several types of solar-to-electric converters can be manufactured on the Moon. Materials research and processing demonstrations are suggested that can be carried out on Earth, the Space Transportation System (STS), the International Space Station (ISS), and on the Moon to advance the in situ production of solar-to-electric power systems on the Moon. Many of the technologies will be applicable to Mars, the silicate moons, and asteroids.
The part to be played by materials scientists to further NASA's exploration missions cannot be underestimated. To quote Jerome Groopman (New Yorker, February 14, 2000), "The rocket science will be the easy part". The four main risks on the Critical Path Road Map during a three-year sojourn to Mars are osteoporosis, psychological problems, radiation induced cancer and acute medical trauma. NASA's microgravity materials science program has investigations in membrane fabrication, bone growth and materials for radiation protection. These programs will be reviewed in the context of the four main risks, as will other potential uses of biomaterials and applications of biomimetic processing.
Modifications of the Monte Carlo radiation transport code HETC are underway to extend the code to include transport of energetic heavy ions, such as are found in the galactic cosmic ray spectrum in space. The new HETC code will be available for use in radiation shielding applications associated with missions, such as the proposed manned mission to Mars. In this work the current status of code modification is described. Methods used to develop the required nuclear reaction models, including total, elastic and nuclear breakup processes, and their associated databases are also presented. Finally, plans for future work on the extended HETC code system and for its validation are described.
In an earlier study. Hamilton (2000) mapped the behavior of the 9-12 micron reststrahlen structures with composition in a suite of primarily natural terrestrial pyroxenes. Here we examine the same set of reststrahlen features in the spectra of diogenites and eucrites and place them in the context of the terrestrial samples and of a suite of well-characterized synthetic pyroxenes. The results will be useful to the interpretation of mid-IR spectra of 4 Vesta and other basaltic asteroids.

The silicate portions of mesosiderites are broadly like howardites [1], and this has led to persistent interpretations that mesosiderites and howardites are derived from the same parent asteroid [2]. Yet, when examined carefully, one finds that there are substantial petrological and compositional differences between these polymict breccias. These differences indicate that separate parent asteroids are more probable [3, 4]. I will document the distinctions between these groups based on my data and literature information [5] and discuss their origins.
