The effects of canard-wing flow-field interactions on longitudinal stability, effective dihedral and potential deep-stall trim

The literature available on high aspect ratio canard configurations shows them to have some unique stability characteristics. Using a generic canard-wing model, the effects of canard-wing flow-field interactions on stability were investigated in the NASA Langley Twelve-Foot Low-Speed Wind Tunnel. Results for the attached flow regime indicate linear interactions shift the neutral point of a canard configuration forward, but the effect of a canard on a wing can change significantly when the flow over the surface begins to separate, even several degrees below stall. The asymmetry of the canard downwash in a sideslip condition can result in an increment in effective dihedral roughly proportional to canard lift coefficient. At very high angles of attack the presence of a wing can cause an incremental normal force on a canard, contributing to the possibility of a deep-stall trim point. This effect is greater for a high canard and less for a low one.

The stability of sunspot magnetic fields and the origin of solar flares.

The steady motion in sunspot magnetic regions is considered for both current-free and force-free configurations. The sufficient condition for stability is obtained in the presence of both external current-free and force-free magnetic fields and a steady motion. It is shown that the pattern of such steady motion is most important in triggering an instability of sunspot magnetic fields, both for the current-free and force-free configuration. When there is no steady motion, the current-free configuration of sunspot magnetic fields is always stable, whereas the stability in the case of force-free magnetic fields is connected with the configuration. The onset of a solar flare seems to be associated with an instability connected to the steady motion within the sunspot magnetic regions.

General methods for determining the linear stability of coronal magnetic fields

A time integration of a linearized plasma equation of motion has been performed to calculate the ideal linear stability of arbitrary three-dimensional magnetic fields. The convergence rates of the explicit and implicit power methods employed are speeded up by using sequences of cyclic shifts. Growth rates are obtained for Gold-Hoyle force-free equilibria, and the corkscrew-kink instability is found to be very weak.

Project Vanguard Magnetic-Field Instrumentation and Measurements

The Vanguard III Satellite, 1959 Eta, placed in orbit on September 18, 1959, contained a proton precessional magnetometer for magnetic-field studies of exceptional accuracy. Throughout the 85 days of battery life, the instrumentation functioned according to plan. Measurements of the absolute total field were obtained in the meridian belts of Minitrack stations at altitudes 510 to 3750 kilometers and at latitudes +/- 33.4 degrees. Surface magnetic observatories were operated at eight of the Minitrack stations to furnish correlative information. This paper reviews briefly the instrumentation employed in these experiments, and the data collection and reduction procedures. Emphasis is given to results from a preliminary analysis. Specifically, this analysis bears on the accuracy of computed fields, the stability of the earth's field in space, the Capetown anomaly, and magnetic-storm effects.

The effect of an electric field on the morphological stability of the crystal-melt interface of a binary alloy

A fully time-dependent linear stability analysis of the morphological stability of a planar interface during directional solidification of a binary alloy at constant velocity in the presence of an electric field, is performed. The electromigration of solute and the differing electrical conductivities of solid and liquid for a model in which the temperature gradient is constant are taken into account. The present results are compared with the constitutional supercooling criterion, and it is shown there may be substantial differences. A modified constitutional supercooling criterion which is valid over a large range of conditions is derived. It is also found under certain conditions that the onset of instability may be time dependent.

An Overview of the Null-Field Method. II: Convergence and Numerical Stability

In this paper we provide an analysis of the convergence and numerical stability of the null-field method with discrete sources. We show that (i) if the null-field scheme is numerically stable then we can decide whether or not convergence can be achieved; (ii) if the null-field scheme is numerically unstable then we cannot draw any conclusion about the convergence issue; and (iii) the numerical stability is closely related to the property of a tangential system of radiating discrete sources to form a Riesz basis. Our numerical analysis indicates that for prolate spheroids and localized vector spherical wave functions, the null-field scheme is numerically unstable (this system of vector functions does not form a Riesz basis), while for distributed vector spherical wave functions, the numerical instability is not so pronounced (this system of discrete sources almost possesses the property of being a Riesz basis). We also describe an analytical method for computing the surface integrals in the framework of the conventional null-field method with localized vector spherical wave functions which increases the stability of the numerical scheme.

The effect of an electric field on the morphological stability of the crystal-melt interface of a binary alloy. III - Weakly nonlinear theory

The effect of a constant electric current on the crystal-melt interface morphology during directional solidification at constant velocity of a binary alloy is considered. A linear temperature field is assumed, and thermoelectric effects and Joule heating are neglected; electromigration and differing electrical conductivities of crystal and melt are taken into account. A two-dimensional weakly nonlinear analysis is carried out to third order in the interface amplitude, resulting in a cubic amplitude equation that describes whether the bifurcation from the planar state is supercritical or subcritical. For wavelengths corresponding to the most dangerous mode of linear theory, the demarcation between supercritical and subcritical behavior is calculated as a function of processing conditions and material parameters. The bifurcation behavior is a sensitive function of the magnitude and direction of the electric current and of the electrical conductivity ratio.

Measurements of Breakdown Field and Forward Current Stability in 3C-SiC P-N Junction Diodes Grown on Step-Free 4H-SiC

This paper reports on initial fabrication and electrical characterization of 3C-SiC p-n junction diodes grown on step-free 4H-SiC mesas. Diodes with n-blocking-layer doping ranging from approx. 2 x 10(exp 16)/cu cm to approx.. 5 x 10(exp 17)/cu cm were fabricated and tested. No optimization of junction edge termination or ohmic contacts was employed. Room temperature reverse characteristics of the best devices show excellent low-leakage behavior, below previous 3C-SiC devices produced by other growth techniques, until the onset of a sharp breakdown knee. The resulting estimated breakdown field of 3C-SiC is at least twice the breakdown field of silicon, but is only around half the breakdown field of <0001> 4H-SiC for the doping range studied. Initial high current stressing of 3C diodes at 100 A/sq cm for more than 20 hours resulted in less than 50 mV change in approx. 3 V forward voltage. 3C-SiC, pn junction, p+n diode, rectifier, reverse breakdown, breakdown field, heteroepitaxy, epitaxial growth, electroluminescence, mesa, bipolar diode

The redox state of planetary basalts

Redox variations of terrestrial and lunar basalts and the redox variations in single cooling units (e.g., lava flows and lava lakes) are reviewed. Estimates for the redox states of inner solar system planetary basalts are presented; these estimates are based on consideration of a number of cosmogenic properties, models for planetary interiors, and the sequence of condensation with heliocentric distance from the protosun. It is suggested that basalts on Mercury and the Moon crystallized below the iron-wustite buffer curve; Venusian basalts are more oxidized than those on Mercury, less oxidized than those on earth, and crystallization within the field of wustite stability is thought likely; basalts on earth are dominantly in the field of magnetite stability; Martian basalts are estimated to crystallize in the upper regions of magnetite stability and well into the hematite field of stability expressed in terms of temperature and oxygen fugacity.
