A high efficiency rooftop air conditioning system using multi-speed compressors
This study delineates a meticulous exploration of technologies to enhance the energy efficiency of rooftop air conditioning units, employing the DOE/ORNL heat pump design model for comprehensive engineering design and optimization. A baseline rooftop air conditioning unit, featuring a 13 ton (45.7 kW) cooling capacity and a 17.9 integrated energy efficiency ratio, served as the point of departure for substantive efficiency enhancements. Key modifications included the consolidation of two refrigerant circuits into one, integrating three parallel 2-stage (dual-speed) compressors, fan replacements with high-efficiency substitutes. Notably, a lower global warming potential refrigerant, R452B, was evaluated as a substitute for R-410A, demonstrating better performance in the lab prototype. Further, the achieved measured integrated energy efficiency ratio of 21.4 in the lab prototype surpassed the baseline integrated energy efficiency ratio. Comparative evaluations between R410A and R452B indicated heightened efficiency with the latter, showcasing a lab-demonstrated integrated energy efficiency ratio of 22.4 at the rated capacity of 13.8 ton (48.5 kW) and 23.9 integrated energy efficiency ratio at the rated capacity of 10 ton (35.2 kW). This research underscores the successful development of a rigorous, energy efficient rooftop air conditioning unit prototype with noteworthy environmental and economic implications.
Computational design and engineering of an Escherichia coli strain producing the nonstandard amino acid para -aminophenylalanine
Introducing heterologous pathways into host cells constitutes a promising strategy for synthesizing nonstandard amino acids (nsAAs) to enable the production of proteins with expanded chemistries. However, this strategy has proven challenging, as the expression of heterologous pathways can disrupt cellular homeostasis of the host cell. Here, we sought to optimize the heterologous production of the nsAA para -aminophenylalanine (pAF) in Escherichia coli . First, we incorporated a heterologous pAF biosynthesis pathway into a genome-scale model of E. coli metabolism and computationally identified metabolic interventions in the host’s native metabolism to improve pAF production. Next, we explored different approaches of imposing these flux interventions experimentally and found that the upregulation of flux in the chorismate biosynthesis pathway through the elimination of feedback inhibition mechanisms could significantly raise pAF titers (~20-fold) while maintaining a reasonable pAF production-growth rate trade-off. Overall, this study provides a promising strategy for the biosynthesis of nsAAs in engineered cells.

A Computational Framework for Control Co-Design of Resilient Cyber–Physical Systems With Applications to Microgrids
Critical infrastructure networks, such as power and transportation networks, can be modelled as cyber-physical systems. As the complexity of such systems grow, there is need for developing metrics and design tools that will co-optimize the physical components of the system and the control policies to guarantee resilience against cyber and natural threats. To that end, we develop a simulation-based control co-design computational framework that will concurrently determine the system and control parameters of a cyber-physical system to meet pre-specified resilience, operational and economic objectives. Here, the capabilities of the developed co-design engine is demonstrated by designing the physical components and control parameters of a microgrid system that will meet its resiliency objectives when subjected to various cyber and physical threats.
U-rich U-Mo Solidus, Liquidus, Enthalpy, and Thermal Diffusivity
Several material properties have been studied as a function of composition as part of the USHPRR effort to use U-10Mo for LEU monolithic fuel foils, with special attention to areas where simulation outcomes can be improved. The liquidus and solidus phase boundaries are important for engineering design of processing parameters and for predicting the degree of microsegregation within initial castings. The numerous phase diagram constructions available in the literature differ significantly in their solid/liquid boundary definitions, therefore, an experimental strategy was employed in order to resolve some of the discord. That strategy focuses not on proving any singular point, but instead to provide data with highly characterized uncertainty. The data presented here is the most consistent with the U-rich liquidus and solidus boundaries provided by H. Okamoto (2012), Berche et al. (2011), and Mardon et al. (1959). The recently suggested change in the peritectic reaction temperature (to 1302 K) suggested by Berchè and adopted by Okamoto is also supported, but with lower confidence. The enthalpy of fusion is a basic characteristic of the solidification reaction property for which is required for both research-oriented predictions of behavior and development of applied design strategies for casting engineering. It has been determined that an admixture model for the heat of fusion between U BCC and Mo BCC is a reasonable assumption within the composition region of interest, though limitations of the measurement accuracy impacts the ability to support any trends more detailed than this baseline behavior. A limited number of thermal diffusivity measurements were also performed into the gamma region to provide additional information for solidification modeling and simulations as well as a check on the component properties of thermal conductivity, density, and heat capacity.

An initial engineering design study was performed for an advanced post combustion CO 2 capture (PCC) technology to be installed at a commercial-scale steam methane reforming (SMR) hydrogen plant located in the US Gulf Coast. The PCC process integrated the VeloxoTherm™ structured adsorbent technology from Svante for the CO 2 separation and CO 2 compression and purification and balance of plant systems provided by Linde. This pre-FEED equivalent study included following: (1) design basis, (2) basic engineering, including development of process flow diagrams and heat & material balances, (3) inside the battery limit (ISBL) equipment and systems specification, (4) balance of plant outside the battery limit (OSBL) equipment and systems specifications, (5) technology maturation plan, (6) hazard identification (HAZID) review, (7) environmental, health and safety (EH&S) assessment and environmental permitting analysis, (8) constructability review, (9) ISBL and OSBL EPC cost estimation, and (10) commercial-scale techno-economic analysis including capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX) and CO 2 capture cost estimates.
Process Systems Engineering-Informed Design and Scale-Up of Multi-stage Diafiltration Cascades for Lithium and Cobalt Recovery from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries
These slides present work jointly completed by Tasks in PrOMMiS. The first half of the presentation motivates the importance of critical materials for national security and how the recovery of critical minerals via membrane separations can be more cost effective than currently used technology. The second half of the presentation presents cost-optimal results for the custom cost model for diafiltration using the superstructure flowsheet developed by CMU. These results highlight how PSE can inform process targets (i.e., product purity targets) and suitable design strategies for scaled-up membrane cascades.

Battery cell engineering and design to reach high energy
Improved high energy capacity designs for lithium ion batteries are described that take advantage of the properties of high specific capacity anode active compositions and high specific capacity cathode active compositions. In particular, specific electrode designs provide for achieving very high energy densities. Furthermore, the complex behavior of the active materials is used advantageously in a radical electrode balancing design that significantly reduced wasted electrode capacity in either electrode when cycling under realistic conditions of moderate to high discharge rates and/or over a reduced depth of discharge.
