Prevention of damage to the science instruments of Mariner-Mars '71 spacecraft due to accidental viewing of the sun during sun-acquisition following exit from earth shadow.

It is pointed out that severe damage could result to the shutters of several science instruments if the sun were to appear in or sweep across the field of view at any time during the mission to Mars in 1971. The problem of accidental viewing of the sun following exit from the earth's shadow is probabilistic and rather difficult to resolve. The studies conducted show that typical probabilities of TV-A viewing the sun are on the order of 0.1%.

The effect of nozzle inlet shape, lip thickness, and exit shape and size on subsonic jet noise.

Far field noise data were taken for convergent nozzles of various shapes and sizes at subsonic velocities exceeding 400 ft/sec. For a circular nozzle, the nozzle inlet shape and lip thickness had no effect on the noise level, directivity, or spectra when compared at the same nozzle exit diameter and peak exhaust velocity. A sharp edged orifice was one exception to this statement. Coannular nozzles can produce additional high frequency noise. Blunt ended centerbodies, where there is significant base drag, also generate significant additional noise.

Nozzle exit exhaust products from space shuttle boost vehicle (November 1973 design)

Principal exhaust species emitted at various altitudes for two trajectories of the space shuttle vehicle are presented. The exhaust composition is given for the nozzle exit plane on the basis of equilibrium chemistry. Afterburning of excess H, H2, and CO in the plume is accounted for. Species considered include HCl and Al2O3, which have been recognized as environmentally significant, as well as others such as H2O (produced by both the solid rocket motor and the orbiter main engine) which, although innocuous, may participate in subsequent chemical reactions in the atmosphere.

Effect of wall edge suction on the performance of a short annular dump diffuser with exit passage flow resistance

The effect of wall edge suction on the performance of a short annular dump diffuser having a perforated plate flow resistance device in the exit passage was evaluated. Testing was conducted with air at near ambient pressure and temperature at inlet Mach numbers of 0.18 and 0.27 with suction rates up to 13.5 percent. Results show that pressure recovery downstream of the perforated plate was improved significantly by suction. Optimum performance was obtained with the flow resistance plate located at one inlet passage height downstream of the dump plane.

Analytical simulation of the far-field jet noise and the unsteady jet flow-field by a model of periodic shedding of vortex ring from the jet exit

The construction of a theoretical flow field due to shedding of vortex rings, the identification of the controlling parameters, and the determination of whether the theoretical model successfully simulated the unsteady pressure field near jet (and consequently the far field noise) was studied. The basic parameters contained in the analytic solutions were the epoch at which a vortex ring was shed near the jet exit and the eddy viscosity coefficient. These parameters were identified from the experimental data for the real-time pressure and from the spread of the mixing layer of the jet. Results of the theoretical analysis show good qualitative agreement with the experimental data.

Exit of a blast wave from a conical nozzle

The Eulerian computer code DORF was used in the analysis of a two-dimensional, unsteady flow field resulting from semi-confined explosions for propulsive applications. Initially, the ambient gas inside the conical shaped nozzle is set into motion due to the expansion of the explosion product gas, forming a shock wave. When this shock front exits the nozzle, it takes almost a spherical form while a complex interaction between the nozzle and compression and rarefaction waves takes place behind the shock. The results show an excellent agreement with experimental data.

Turbulence measurements in the compressor exit flow of a General Electric CF6-50 engine

Ruggedized cooled film probes were used to measure CF6-50 compressor exit turbulence properties at three different engine idle condition test points. The turbulence probe was coupled to a constant temperature anemometer and signal conditioning system. An on-line readout system connected to the anemometer was used to check the data as it was acquired. At engine idle conditions, the turbulence intensity ranged from 4.8 percent to 5.6 percent and the length scale ranged from 5.64 cm to 6.95 cm. The length scale values are somewhat larger than the passage height at the measurement plane (5.54 cm), which indicates that the shape of the turbulent eddies are elongated in the axial direction. The microscale values range from about 0.73 cm to about 0.98 cm. Power spectral density distributions show that a large proportion of the turbulent energy at the measurement plane is concentrated at frequencies below one kilohertz.

Application of composite materials to turbofan engine fan exit guide vanes

A program was conducted by NASA with the JT9D engine manufacturer to develop a lightweight, cost effective, composite material fan exit guide vane design having satisfactory structural durability for commerical engine use. Based on the results of a previous company supported program, eight graphite/epoxy and graphite-glass/epoxy guide vane designs were evaluated and four were selected for fabrication and testing. Two commercial fabricators each fabricated 13 vanes. Fatigue tests were used to qualify the selected design configurations under nominally dry, 38 C (100 F) and fully wet and 60 C (140 F) environmental conditions. Cost estimates for a production rate of 1000 vanes per month ranged from 1.7 to 2.6 times the cost of an all aluminum vane. This cost is 50 to 80 percent less than the initial program target cost ratio which was 3 times the cost of an aluminum vane. Application to the JT9D commercial engine is projected to provide a weight savings of 236 N (53 lb) per engine.

Core compressor exit stage study. 1: Aerodynamic and mechanical design

The effect of aspect ratio on the performance of core compressor exit stages was demonstrated using two three stage, highly loaded, core compressors. Aspect ratio was identified as having a strong influence on compressors endwall loss. Both compressors simulated the last three stages of an advanced eight stage core compressor and were designed with the same 0.915 hub/tip ratio, 4.30 kg/sec (9.47 1bm/sec) inlet corrected flow, and 167 m/sec (547 ft/sec) corrected mean wheel speed. The first compressor had an aspect ratio of 0.81 and an overall pressure ratio of 1.357 at a design adiabatic efficiency of 88.3% with an average diffusion factor or 0.529. The aspect ratio of the second compressor was 1.22 with an overall pressure ratio of 1.324 at a design adiabatic efficiency of 88.7% with an average diffusion factor of 0.491.

Influence of exit impedance on finite difference solutions of transient acoustic mode propagation in ducts

The time-dependent governing acoustic-difference equations and boundary conditions are developed and solved for sound propagation in an axisymmetric (cylindrical) hard-wall duct without flow and with spinning acoustic modes. The analysis begins with a harmonic sound source radiating into a quiescent duct. This explicit iteration method then calculates stepwise in real time to obtain the steady solutions of the acoustic field. The transient method did not converge to the steady-state solution for cutoff acoustic duct modes. This has implications as to its use in a variable-area duct, where modes may become cutoff in the smal-area portion of the duct. For single cutoff mode propagation the steady-state impedance boundary condition produced acoustic reflections during the initial transient that caused finite instabilities in the numerical calculations. The stability problem is resolved by reformulating the exit boundary condition. Example calculations show good agreement with exact analytical and numerical results for forcing frequencies above, below, and nearly at the cutoff frequency.

Characteristics of mean velocity in the annulus wall region at the exit of turbomachinery rotor passage

This paper reports the experimental study of the three-dimensional characteristics of the mean velocity in the annulus-wall boundary layer and wake mixing region of a moderately loaded compressor rotor blade. The measurements reported were obtained using a three-sensor hot-wire probe at the exit of the rotor. They consisted of tangential surveys at several axial and radial locations downstream of the compressor rotor blade passage. The variation of the streamwise, normal, and radial velocity profiles and their decay characteristics are derived from this data. The measurements reveal the highly complex and three-dimensional nature of the annulus-wall flow field and the nature of the interaction of the annulus-wall boundary layer, the blade boundary layers and wake, and the secondary flow associated with the annulus-wall region.

Thermal IR exitance model of a plant canopy

A thermal IR exitance model of a plant canopy based on a mathematical abstraction of three horizontal layers of vegetation was developed. Canopy geometry within each layer is quantitatively described by the foliage and branch orientation distributions and number density. Given this geometric information for each layer and the driving meteorological variables, a system of energy budget equations was determined and solved for average layer temperatures. These estimated layer temperatures, together with the angular distributions of radiating elements, were used to calculate the emitted thermal IR radiation as a function of view angle above the canopy. The model was applied to a lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) canopy over a diurnal cycle. Simulated vs measured radiometric average temperatures of the midcanopy layer corresponded with 2 C. Simulation results suggested that canopy geometry can significantly influence the effective radiant temperature recorded at varying sensor view angles.

Composite fan exit guide vanes for high bypass ratio gas turbine engines

Various composite materials were identified for reduced weight applications as fan exit guide vanes in high bypass ratio gas turbine engines. Candidate materials, airfoil geometry and ply orientation were evaluated using NASTRAN finite element analysis. A vane core and shell design approach utilizing several different fiber orientation concepts was selected and variations in bending and torsional stiffness were documented. Material suppliers and airfoil fabricators were selected to provide panels and airfoils which were inspected, environmentally conditioned and tested. Static and dynamic airfoil tests established durability characteristics for a range of composite material/design approaches.

Core compressor exit stage study. Volume 4: Data and performance report for the best stage configuration

The core compressor exit stage study program develops rear stage blading designs that have lower losses in their endwall boundary layer regions. The test data and performance results for the best stage configuration consisting of Rotor-B running with Stator-B are described. The technical approach in this efficiency improvement program utilizes a low speed research compressor. Tests were conducted in two ways: (1) to use four identical stages of blading to obtain test data in a true multistage environment and (2) to use a single stage of blading to compare with the multistage test results. The effects of increased rotor tip clearances and circumferential groove casing treatment are evaluated.

Computer modeling of fan-exit-splitter spacing effects on F100 response to distortion

The distortion response of the F100(3) engine was effected by the fan exit splitter configuration. The sensitivity for a proximate splitter fan is calculated to be slightly greater than a remote splitter configuration with identical airfoils. Predicted response was based upon a multiple segment parallel compressor Model modified to include a bypass ratio representation that effects the performance characteristics of the last rotor and intermediate case struts. The predicted distortion response required an accurate definition of row pre- and post-stall undistorted operation.

An example of the nonlinearity of clear and cloudy radiant exitances in the presence of three-dimensional cloud structure

It is nearly universally assumed that the relationship between fractional cloud cover and radiant exitance is linear. There seems to be, however, little quantitative justification for this assumption, and recent work appears to cast considerable doubt even on this assumption. The reported investigation reinforces this doubt. It is found that the radiation field over three-dimensional broken clouds may differ markedly from that over two-dimensional fields. Including the thickness of the clouds appears to be equivalent to increasing the cloud cover. Broken clouds with finite thicknesses are found to be more effective at influencing radiation than are infinitely thin clouds of finite optical depth. Attention is given to the effect of the geometric arrangement of cloud fields. It is pointed out that this arrangement can cause substantial deviations from the often used linear relationship.
