An Exact Solution of Einstein-Maxwell Gravity Coupled to a Scalar Field

The general solution to low-energy string theory representing static spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a massless scalar field has been found. Some of the partial cases appear to coincide with known solutions to black holes, naked singularities, and gravity and electromagnetic fields.

An Exact Dual Adjoint Solution Method for Turbulent Flows on Unstructured Grids

An algorithm for solving the discrete adjoint system based on an unstructured-grid discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The method is constructed such that an adjoint solution exactly dual to a direct differentiation approach is recovered at each time step, yielding a convergence rate which is asymptotically equivalent to that of the primal system. The new approach is implemented within a three-dimensional unstructured-grid framework and results are presented for inviscid, laminar, and turbulent flows. Improvements to the baseline solution algorithm, such as line-implicit relaxation and a tight coupling of the turbulence model, are also presented. By storing nearest-neighbor terms in the residual computation, the dual scheme is computationally efficient, while requiring twice the memory of the flow solution. The scheme is expected to have a broad impact on computational problems related to design optimization as well as error estimation and grid adaptation efforts.

Feedline dynamic effects on shuttle POGO stability

The transmission parameters for the dynamic characteristics of a feedline were approximated using both power and product series expansions. The feedline transfer functions of a shuttle orbiter feedline configuration were obtained using power and product series approximations of 60th, 120th, 180th, and 240th, order. Bode plots using the above polynomial approximations were obtained and the results compared with the exact solution. The exact solution to the feedline transfer function was obtained by using the transcendental terms appearing in the transmission parameters. The results show that the shuttle orbiter feedline may be modeled adequately by using polynomial approximations for the transcendental functions appearing in the transmission parameters. The power series approach was shown to be preferable to the product series method.

Exact general solutions for cosmological scalar field evolution in a background-dominated expansion

We derive exact general solutions (as opposed to attractor particular solutions) and corresponding first integrals for the evolution of a scalar field $\phi$ in a universe dominated by a background fluid with equation of state parameter wB. In addition to the previously examined linear [V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$] and quadratic [V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 2 ] potentials, we show that exact solutions exist for the power-law potential V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ n with n=4(1+w B )/(1-w B )+2 and n=2(1+w B )/(1-w B ). These correspond to the potentials V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 6 and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 2 for matter domination and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 10 and V($\phi$)=V 0 $\phi$ 4 for radiation domination. The $\phi$ 6 and $\phi$ 10 potentials can yield either oscillatory or nonoscillatory evolution, and we use the first integrals to determine how the initial conditions map onto each form of evolution. The exponential potential yields an exact solution for a stiff/kination (w B =1) background. We use this exact solution to derive an analytic expression for the evolution of the equation of state parameter, $w_\phi$, for this case.

Exact analytical solution to a transient conjugate heat-transfer problem

An exact analytical solution is found for laminar, constant-property, slug flow over a thin plate which is also convectively cooled from below. The solution is found by means of two successive Laplace transformations when a transient in the plate and the fluid is initiated by a step change in the fluid inlet temperature. The exact solution yields the transient fluid temperature, surface heat flux, and surface temperature distributions. The results of the exact transient solution for the surface heat flux are compared to the quasi-steady values, and a criterion for the validity of the quasi-steady results is found. Also the effect of the plate coupling parameter on the surface heat flux are investigated.

An improved solution of the simplified two-phase plume

An exact solution of the two-phase, gas-particle, solid propellant rocket exhaust plume flowfield is presented. The good agreement between the exact solution and the experimental data proves that the accuracy of the present technique is acceptable for, at least, preliminary design calculations. A good comparison between the plume impingement effects predicted by the exact solution and those by the best computer code available has also been found for various propellant formulations and rocket sizes. This shows that the present exact solution does describe the basic characteristics of the two-phase plume. In case of a parametric analysis for obtaining an optimum design, the present exact solution will be a more convenient tool than any one of the numerical techniques especially when many parameters are involved in the optimization study. Several typical results are shown herein and their physical significance is discussed.

Reversed flow above a plate with suction

A minor extension is developed for Kovasznay's (1948) solution, and an exact solution is presented for Navier-Stokes equations that may represent the reversed flow about a flat plate with suction. This exact solution is the result of a search for a solution that may serve as an exact basic flow for a model stability analysis of nonparallel flows involving flow reversal.

Hierarchic models for laminated plates

Structural plates and shells are three-dimensional bodies, one dimension of which happens to be much smaller than the other two. Thus, the quality of a plate or shell model must be judged on the basis of how well its exact solution approximates the corresponding three-dimensional problem. Of course, the exact solution depends not only on the choice of the model but also on the topology, material properties, loading and constraints. The desired degree of approximation depends on the analyst's goals in performing the analysis. For these reasons models have to be chosen adaptively. Hierarchic sequences of models make adaptive selection of the model which is best suited for the purposes of a particular analysis possible. The principles governing the formulation of hierarchic models for laminated plates are presented. The essential features of the hierarchic models described models are: (1) the exact solutions corresponding to the hierarchic sequence of models converge to the exact solution of the corresponding problem of elasticity for a fixed laminate thickness; and (2) the exact solution of each model converges to the same limit as the exact solution of the corresponding problem of elasticity with respect to the laminate thickness approaching zero. The formulation is based on one parameter (beta) which characterizes the hierarchic sequence of models, and a set of constants whose influence was assessed by a numerical sensitivity study. The recommended selection of these constants results in the number of fields increasing by three for each increment in the power of beta. Numerical examples analyzed with the proposed sequence of models are included and good correlation with the reference solutions was found. Results were obtained for laminated strips (plates in cylindrical bending) and for square and rectangular plates with uniform loading and with homogeneous boundary conditions. Cross-ply and angle-ply laminates were evaluated and the results compared with those of MSC/PROBE. Hierarchic models make the computation of any engineering data possible to an arbitrary level of precision within the framework of the theory of elasticity.

A new class of exact, nonlinear solutions to the Grad-Shafranov equation

We have constructed a new class of exact, nonlinear solutions to the Grad-Shafranov equation, representing force-free magnetic fields with translational symmetry. These exact solutions are pertinent to the study of magnetic structures in the solar corona that are subjected to photospheric shearing motions.

The Pekeris problem, and the interior of the pulsating sphere, first success of exact ray theory, and what rays?

This paper presents what is probably the first application of exact ray theory to provide nontrivial exact solutions of the Helmholtz equation. First, the Pekeris problem is considered. This is followed by consideration of the problem of the field maintained within a uniformly pulsating sphere. In the Pekeris problem, an iterative solution provides the exact solution on the second iteration. In the second problem, it is shown that the exact ray theory eliminates the focus of the geometric theory.

Theoretical and lidar studies of the density response of the mesospheric sodium layer to gravity wave perturbations

The density response of atmospheric layers to gravity waves is developed in two forms, an exact solution and a perturbation series solution. The degree of nonlinearity in the layer density response is described by the series solution whereas the exact solution gives insight into the nature of the responses. Density perturbation in an atmospheric layer are shown to be substantially greater than the atmospheric density perturbation associated with the propagation of a gravity wave. Because of the density gradients present in atmospheric layers, interesting effects were observed such as a phase reversal in the linear layer response which occurs near the layer peak. Once the layer response is understood, the sodium layer can be used as a tracer of atmospheric wave motions. A two dimensional digital signal processing technique was developed. Both spatial and temporal filtering are utilized to enhance the resolution by decreasing shot noise by more han 10 dB. Many of the features associated with a layer density response to gravity waves were observed in high resolution density profiles of the mesospheric sodium layer. These include nonlinearities as well as the phase reversal in the linear layer response.

Verification of RadCAD: Specular Capabilities

As part of the RadCAD's development process, it is necessary to compare RadCAD's results with other radiation tools and exact solutions when and where possible. Form factor algorithms have been previously verified with exact solutions. This paper will consider RadCAD's specular capabilities. First, radiation exchange factors will be compared against exact solutions and results from TRASYS for various geometries. Critical dimensions and optical properties are changed for each geometry. Second, a specular adjunct plate system will be used to verify absorbed heat fluxes. This particular geometric problem has had some attention in the literature. Previous authors have used this problem to validate software results with exact analytical solution. This paper will compare absorbed heat rates against the exact solution and other published results from other thermal radiation tools. The agreement between RadCAD and the exact solutions is good. The maximum error for both specular and diffuse exchange factors for both geometries and all optical properties was 3%. The absorbed fluxes differed by a maximum of 4% for the adjunct plate problem.

Similarity Downselection: Finding the n Most Dissimilar Molecular Conformers for Reference-Free Metabolomics

Computational methods for creating in silico libraries of molecular descriptors (e.g., collision cross sections) are becoming increasingly prevalent due to the limited number of authentic reference materials available for traditional library building. These so-called “reference-free metabolomics” methods require sampling sets of molecular conformers in order to produce high accuracy property predictions. Due to the computational cost of the subsequent calculations for each conformer, there is a need to sample the most relevant subset and avoid repeating calculations on conformers that are nearly identical. The goal of this study is to introduce a heuristic method of finding the most dissimilar conformers from a larger population in order to help speed up reference-free calculation methods and maintain a high property prediction accuracy. Finding the set of the n items most dissimilar from each other out of a larger population becomes increasingly difficult and computationally expensive as either n or the population size grows large. Because there exists a pairwise relationship between each item and all other items in the population, finding the set of the n most dissimilar items is different than simply sorting an array of numbers. For instance, if you have a set of the most dissimilar n = 4 items, one or more of the items from n = 4 might not be in the set n = 5. An exact solution would have to search all possible combinations of size n in the population exhaustively. We present an open-source software called similarity downselection (SDS), written in Python and freely available on GitHub. SDS implements a heuristic algorithm for quickly finding the approximate set(s) of the n most dissimilar items. We benchmark SDS against a Monte Carlo method, which attempts to find the exact solution through repeated random sampling. We show that for SDS to find the set of n most dissimilar conformers, our method is not only orders of magnitude faster, but it is also more accurate than running Monte Carlo for 1,000,000 iterations, each searching for set sizes n = 3–7 out of a population of 50,000. We also benchmark SDS against the exact solution for example small populations, showing that SDS produces a solution close to the exact solution in these instances. Using theoretical approaches, we also demonstrate the constraints of the greedy algorithm and its efficacy as a ratio to the exact solution.

Numerical Uncertainty Analysis for Computational Fluid Dynamics using Student T Distribution -- Application of CFD Uncertainty Analysis Compared to Exact Analytical Solution

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the standard numerical tool used by Fluid Dynamists to estimate solutions to many problems in academia, government, and industry. CFD is known to have errors and uncertainties and there is no universally adopted method to estimate such quantities. This paper describes an approach to estimate CFD uncertainties strictly numerically using inputs and the Student-T distribution. The approach is compared to an exact analytical solution of fully developed, laminar flow between infinite, stationary plates. It is shown that treating all CFD input parameters as oscillatory uncertainty terms coupled with the Student-T distribution can encompass the exact solution.

Exact vacuum solution to conformal Weyl gravity and galactic rotation curves

The complete, exact exterior solution for a static, spherically symmetric source in locally conformal invariant Weyl gravity is presented. The solution includes the familiar exterior Schwarzschild solution as a special case and contains an extra gravitational potential term which grows linearly with distance. The obtained solution provides a potential explanation for observed galactic rotation curves without the need for dark matter. The solution also has some interesting implications for cosmology.
