A Possible Observation of Sigma-nn Continuum Structures and A Bound Sigma-NN State Using the (e, e 'K+) Reaction

The E12-17-003 (e, e'K+) experiment was carried out in the experimental Hall A facility of Jefferson Lab in November 2018. The experiment aimed at providing the experimental data for the unknown Lambda-n interaction by measuring the bound state or the resonance state as indicated by the HypHI experiment. The so obtained Lambda-n interaction was assumed to solve the existing charge symmetry breaking problem in the case of Lambda-N interaction. The experiment used Hall A high resolution spectrometers (both left and right spectrometers) positioned symmetrically at constant angle 13.2 deg. each. A 25 cm long aluminum cylinder filled with H-3 gas was used as a production target. The major calibration data were taken with the H target contained in an identical aluminum cylinder. The electroproduction of Lambda and Sigma^0 via p(e, e'K+)Lambda, Sigma^0 reactions was used to calibrate the absolute energy scale with the known masses of the Lambda and Sigma^0. Then by using the (e, e'K+) Sigma-reaction, two possible Lambda-nn resonance states and one NN bound state were observed. The observed states have the energy resolution about 1.6 MeV (FWHM), however, great r statistics are required to solidly confirm the observed states. The A = 3 and 4 Sigma bound states have been predicted long ago but only the A = 4 Sigma hypernucleus, that is He-4/Sigma, was found in the (K-, pi-) reaction. A careful Monte Carlo study was conducted to study the A (nuclear mass number) dependence on the missing mass resolution by using the identical experimental conditions. The simulated and experimentally obtained Lambda and Sigma^0 channels agreed within 100 keV in sigma, where sigma is the standard deviation. The intrinsic missing mass resolution of A = 3 (3/Lambda-n) resonance was predicted about sigma = 0.67 MeV with a natural width of about 0.6 MeV. However, due to the low statistics the precision does not permit sufficient constrain on the determination of the Lambda-n interaction. The reason of having such low statistics is due to the use of unoptimized Hall A system which was definitely feasible but not ideal for this experiment. In addition, the cross section was found to be much smaller than expected.

First Search for Dark Sector e+e- Explanations of the MiniBooNE Anomaly at MicroBooNE

We present MicroBooNE’s first search for dark sector e⁺e⁻ explanations of the long-standing MiniBooNE anomaly. The MiniBooNE anomaly has garnered significant attention over the past 20 years including previous MicroBooNE investigations into both anomalous electron and photon excesses, but its origin still remains unclear. In this talk we present the first direct test of dark sector models in which dark neutrinos, produced through neutrino-induced scattering, decay into missing energy and visible e⁺e⁻ pairs that could comprise the MiniBooNE anomaly. Many such models have recently gained traction as a viable solution to the anomaly while evading past bounds. Using an exposure of 6.87×$10^20$ protons-on-target in the Booster Neutrino Beam, we implement a selection targeting forward-going, coherently produced e⁺e⁻ events to study this possibility. This talk will present the results of this targeted dark sector search and summarize the latest three recently presented MicroBooNE photon results, along with discussing their connection to this result.

Searching for an Enhanced Signal of the Onset of Color Transparency in Baryons with D(e,e′p)n Scattering

Observation of the onset of color transparency in baryons would provide a new means of studying the nuclear strong force and would be the first clear evidence of baryons transforming into a color-neutral point-like size in the nucleus as predicted by quantum chromodynamics. Recent C(e,e′p) results from electron-scattering did not observe the onset of color transparency (CT) in protons up to spacelike four-momentum transfers squared, Q2=14.2 GeV2. The traditional methods of searching for CT in (e,e′p) scattering use heavy targets favoring kinematics with already initially reduced final state interactions (FSIs) such that any CT effect that further reduces FSIs will be small. The reasoning behind this choice is the difficulty in accounting for all FSIs. D(e,e′p)n, on the other hand, has well-understood FSI contributions from double scattering with a known dependence on the kinematics and can show an increased sensitivity to hadrons in point-like configurations. Double scattering is the square of the re-scattering amplitude in which the knocked-out nucleon interacts with the spectator nucleon, a process that is suppressed in the presence of point-like configurations and is particularly well-studied for the deuteron. This suppression yields a quadratic sensitivity to CT effects and is strongly dependent on the choice of kinematics. Here, we describe a possible Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) electron-scattering experiment that utilizes these kinematics and explores the potential signal for the onset of CT with enhanced sensitivity as compared to recent experiments.

Detector R&D needs for the next generation $e^+e^-$ collider

The 2021 Snowmass Energy Frontier panel wrote in its final report "The realization of a Higgs factory will require an immediate, vigorous and targeted detector R&D program". Both linear and circular $e^+e^-$ collider efforts have developed a conceptual design for their detectors and are aggressively pursuing a path to formalize these detector concepts. The U.S. has world-class expertise in particle detectors, and is eager to play a leading role in the next generation $e^+e^-$ collider, currently slated to become operational in the 2040s. It is urgent that the U.S. organize its efforts to provide leadership and make significant contributions in detector R&D. These investments are necessary to build and retain the U.S. expertise in detector R&D and future projects, enable significant contributions during the construction phase and maintain its leadership in the Energy Frontier regardless of the choice of the collider project. In this document, we discuss areas where the U.S. can and must play a leading role in the conceptual design and R&D for detectors for $e^+e^-$ colliders.

MEASURING CLAS12 D(E, E′Π±) CROSS SECTIONS FOR E4NU

Neutrino experiments need neutrino event generators such as GENIE to simulate neutrinonucleus (¿A) interactions in order to measure neutrino oscillations. We need eA data to validate GENIE. GENIE d(e, e') cross sections do not match data in the pion production region. Further analysis of this region can help constrain GENIE models. The goal of this project was to compare 4.244 GeV CLAS12 d(e, e'p±) cross sections to GENIE predictions. We analyzed data from the Fall 2019 run period of Run Group B (RG-B). We applied particle identification, fiducial, and vertex cuts on electron and charged pion candidates. We compared the measured data with events generated with GENIE and another generator called onepigen. We used onepigen to simulate single charged pion production and to calculate radiative corrections for the data. We submitted GENIE and onepigen events to the GEant4 Monte-Carlo (GEMC) simulation of CLAS12 and applied the same cuts we used on the data. We plotted cross sections as functions of W and binned the events in Q2, ¿pq, and Pp. We used 2D (Q2), 3D (Q2 with ¿pq or Pp), and 4D (Q2, ¿pq, and Pp) binning schemes. We found GENIE describes d(e, e'p±) cross sections better than expected. GENIE describes the data remarkably well in the 2D bins and some 3D and 4D bins. There are many discrepancies between GENIE and data in the other 3D and 4D bins. The results show that, relative to data, GENIE cross sections increase as Q2 increases, decrease as Pp increases, and fit best at low ¿pq. These results will help guide improvements to GENIE in order to reduce the systematic uncertainties in neutrino-oscillation experiments.

Measurement of Born cross section of $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Sigma}^{+}{\overline{\Sigma}}^{-} $$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.951 GeV

Abstract Using 24.1 fb −1 ofe + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the Born cross sections and effective form factors of the$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Sigma}^{+}{\overline{\Sigma}}^{-} $$ e + e − → Σ + Σ ¯ − reaction are measured. The measurements are performed at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.510 to 4.951 GeV. No significant evidence for the decay of the charmonium(-like) states,ψ(3770),ψ(4040),ψ(4160),Y(4230),Y(4360),ψ(4415), andY(4660), into a$$ {\Sigma}^{+}{\overline{\Sigma}}^{-} $$ Σ + Σ ¯ − final state is observed. Consequently, upper limits for the products of the branching fractions and the electronic partial widths at the 90% confidence level are reported for these decays.

Measurement of the cross section of $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Xi}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+} $$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.843 GeV

Abstract Usinge + e − collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 12.9 fb −1 collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the exclusive Born cross sections and the effective form factors of the reaction$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {\Xi}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+} $$ e + e − → Ξ − Ξ ¯ + are measured via the single baryon-tag method at 23 center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.843 GeV. Evidence for the decay$$ \psi (3770)\to {\Xi}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+} $$ ψ 3770 → Ξ − Ξ ¯ + is observed with a significance of 4.5σby analyzing the measured cross sections together with earlier BESIII results. For the other charmonium(-like) statesψ(4040),ψ(4160),Y(4230),Y(4360),ψ(4415), andY(4660), no significant signal of their decay to$$ {\Xi}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+} $$ Ξ − Ξ ¯ + is found. For these states, upper limits of the products of the branching fraction and the electronic partial width at the 90% confidence level are provided.

Measurement of $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ cross sections between 4.009 GeV and 4.951 GeV

Abstract Usinge + e − collision datasets corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 21.7 fb −1 collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.009 GeV to 4.951 GeV, the energy-dependent cross sections of$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ e + e − → p K − Λ ¯ + c . c . are measured for the first time. By fitting these energy-dependent cross sections, we search for the excitedψstatesψ(4160) andψ(4415), and the vector charmonium-like statesψ(4230),ψ(4360), andψ(4660). No evidence for these is observed and the upper limits on the branching fractions of these states decaying into$$ p{K}^{-}\overline{\Lambda}+c.c. $$ p K − Λ ¯ + c . c . are set at the 90% confidence level.

Spectroscopy of A=9 hyperlithium with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at JLab Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}(\#2)=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests.

Probing for high-momentum protons in He 4 via the He 4 ( e , e ' p ) X reactions

Experimental cross sections for the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/$c$ at $x_B=1.24$ and $Q^2$=2(GeV/$c$)$^2$ are reported. The data are compared to Relativistic Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation(RDWIA) calculations for $^4He(e,e'p)^3H$ channel. Significantly more events in the triton mass region are measured for $p_{m}$$>$0.45 GeV/$c$ than are predicted by the theoretical model, suggesting that the effects of initial-state multi-nucleon correlations are stronger than expected by the RDWIA model.

Angular analysis of B → K * e + e − in the low- q 2 region with new electron identification at Belle

We perform an angular analysis of the B → K * e + e − decay for the dielectron mass squared, q 2 , range of 0.0008 – 1.1200 GeV 2 / c 4 using the full Belle dataset in the K * 0 → K + π − and K * + → K S 0 π + channels, incorporating new methods of electron identification to improve the statistical power of the dataset. This analysis is sensitive to contributions from right-handed currents from physics beyond the Standard Model by constraining the Wilson coefficients C 7 ( ′ ) . We perform a fit to the B → K * e + e − differential decay rate and measure the imaginary component of the transversality amplitude to be A T Im = − 1.27 ± 0.52 ± 0.12 , and the K * transverse asymmetry to be A T ( 2 ) = 0.52 ± 0.53 ± 0.11 , with F L and A T Re fixed to the Standard Model values. The resulting constraints on the value of C 7 ′ are consistent with the Standard Model within a 2 σ confidence interval. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Ruling out Color Transparency in Quasielastic 12 C(e,e'p) up to Q 2 of 14.2 (GeV/c) 2

Quasielastic $^{12}$C$(e,e'p)$ scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ = 8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)$^2$, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. Additionally, the measured transparency was consistent with no $Q^2$ dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5 GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured $Q^2$ scales in exclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions. Furthermore, these results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Search for a τ + τ - Resonance in e + e - → μ + μ - τ + τ - Events with the Belle II Experiment

We report the first search for a nonstandard-model resonance decaying into $τ$ pairs in $e^+e^-$ → $μ^+μ^-τ^+τ^-$ events in the 3.6–10 GeV/c 2 mass range. We use a 62.8 fb -1 sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The analysis probes three different models predicting a spin-1 particle coupling only to the heavier lepton families, a Higgs-like spin-0 particle that couples preferentially to charged leptons (leptophilic scalar), and an axionlike particle, respectively. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into $τ$ pairs, ranging from 0.7 to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5 GeV/c 2 and for the axionlike particle model over the entire mass range.

Cross section measurements of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $e^+e^–$ → $ωη$ are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb –1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. A simple $s^{-n}$ dependence for the continuum process can describe the measured Born cross sections. No significant contributions from the ψ(4160), Y(4230), Y(4360), ψ(4415), Y(4660) resonances are found, which indicates relative small branching fractions for these resonances into the $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ final states.

Exclusive J / ψ , ψ ( 2 s ) , and e + e - pair production in Au + Au ultraperipheral collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Measurements of exclusive J/ψ, ψ(2⁢s), and electron-positron (e + ⁢e - ) pair photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions are reported by the STAR experiment at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV. Here, we report several first measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, which are (i) J/ψ photoproduction with large momentum transfer up to 2.2⁢(GeV/c) 2 , (ii) coherent J/ψ photoproduction associated with neutron emissions from nuclear breakup, (iii) the rapidity dependence of incoherent J/ψ photoproduction, (iv) the ψ⁡(2⁢s) photoproduction cross section at midrapidity, and (v) e + ⁢e - pair photoproduction up to high invariant mass of 6GeV/c 2 . For measurement (ii), the coherent J/ψ total cross section of γ + Au → J/ψ + Au as a function of the center-of-mass energy W γN has been obtained without photon energy ambiguities. The data are quantitatively compared with the Monte Carlo models STARlight, Sartre, BeAGLE, and theoretical calculations of gluon saturation with color glass condensate, nuclear shadowing with leading twist approximation, quantum electrodynamics, and the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD. At the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71% ± 10% and 36% ± 7%, respectively, of that of free protons. These data provide an important experimental constraint for nuclear parton distribution functions and a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of the nuclear modification effect at the top RHIC energy.

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 < p T < 12 GeV=c. The branching-fraction ratio BR($Ω^0_c$ → $Ω$ - e + ν e )/BR($Ω^0_c$→ Ω - π + ) is measured to be 1.12 ± 0.22 (stat) ± 0.27 (syst). Comparisons with other experimental measurements, as well as with theoretical calculations, are presented

EPR and 31 P ENDOR Characterization of Pseudo-Jahn–Teller Dynamics and N 2 Activation in Functional Nitrogenase Models, P 3 E M(N 2 ) (M = Fe, Co; E = Si, B, C)

Here, the nominally trigonal, pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT)-active, S = ½ N 2 -bound transition-metal complexes, P 3 E M(N 2 ), M = Fe, Co, with three in-plane phosphine-ligands and axial donors, E = Si, B, C, include functional nitrogenase models that catalyze reduction of N 2 to NH 3 . We applied EPR, 31 P ENDOR spectroscopy and DFT computations to characterize the PJT-induced distortions of four selected P 3 E M(N 2 ), revealing how the metal-ion and axial ligand E together tune both PJT dynamics and N 2 activation for reduction. Comparisons reveal an unrecognized correlation between PJT distortion, M-E bond elasticity, and N 2 activation, providing guidelines for designing bioinspired N 2 -reduction catalysts.
