Testing isospin symmetry breaking in ab initio nuclear theory

In this work we present the first steps towards benchmarking isospin symmetry breaking in ab initio nuclear theory for calculations of superallowed Fermi β decay. Using the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group, we calculate b and c coefficients of the isobaric multiplet mass equation, starting from two different Hamiltonians constructed from chiral effective field theory. We compare results to experimental measurements for all T = 1 isobaric analog triplets of relevance to superallowed β decay for masses A = 10 to A = 74 and find an overall agreement within approximately 250 keV of experimental data for both b and c coefficients. A greater level of accuracy, however, is obtained by a phenomenological Skyrme interaction or a classical charged-sphere estimate. Lastly, we show that evolution of the valence-space operator does not meaningfully improve the quality of the coefficients with respect to experimental data, which indicates that higher-order many-body effects are likely not responsible for the observed discrepancies.

The deconstruction of flavor in the privately democratic Higgs sector

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics fails to explain the observed hierarchy in fermion masses or the origin of fermion-flavor structure. We construct a model to explain these observations in the quark sector. We introduce a spectrum of new particles consisting of six of each — massive singlet vector-like quarks (VLQs), singlet scalars, and SU(2)-doublet scalars. SM quark masses are generated when the neutral components of the SU(2)-doublet scalars acquire non-zero vacuum expectation values (VEVs). We impose global symmetries to ensure that Yukawa couplings stay roughly flavor diagonal and democratic (of the same order), as well as to suppress tree-level flavor-changing neutral currents. Quark-mass hierarchy then follows from a hierarchy in scalar VEVs. The singlet scalars also acquire weak-scale VEVs. Together with the VLQs, they act as messengers between different generations of quarks in the SM. These messenger particles are responsible for generating the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Masakawa (CKM) matrix which depend on the ratios of the singlet VEVs and VLQ masses. Constructed this way, the CKM matrix is found to be independent of the SM fermion masses. Using the measured values of the CKM matrix elements and assuming order-one couplings, we derive constraints on the masses of the VLQs and discuss prospects for probing our model in the near future.

Testing CP properties of the Higgs boson coupling to τ leptons with heterogeneous graphs

In this paper we explore the possibility of utilizing Deep Learning in measuring the CP properties of the coupling of Higgs boson to τ leptons at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. We employ three Deep Learning (DL) networks, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Graph Convolution Network (GCN), and Graph Transformer Network (GTN) to enhance signal-to-background separation. The angle between τ lepton decay planes at the detector level is CP-sensitive observables, and we develop Heterogeneous Graphs that integrate diverse node and edge structures to incorporate the CP-sensitive observable efficiently. Using simplified detector simulations we estimate the reconstruction accuracy of the angle between τ lepton planes at the detector level, considering hadronic τ decay modes and standard model backgrounds. With $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV and $\mathcal{L}$ = 100 fb -1 , MLP excludes CP mixing angles above 20° at 68% confidence level (CL), while GCN and GTN achieve exclusions at 90% CL and 95% CL, respectively. The networks also achieve a 3σ significance in excluding a pure CP-odd state.

Earth mover’s distance as a measure of CP violation

We introduce a new unbinned two sample test statistic sensitive to CP violation utilizing the optimal transport plan associated with the Wasserstein (earth mover’s) distance. The efficacy of the test statistic is shown via two examples of CP asymmetric distributions with varying sample sizes: the Dalitz distributions of B 0 → K + π – π 0 and of D 0 → π + π – π 0 decays. The windowed version of the Wasserstein distance test statistic is shown to have comparable sensitivity to CP violation as the commonly used energy test statistic, but also retains information about the localized distributions of CP asymmetry over the Dalitz plot. For large statistic datasets we introduce two modified Wasserstein distance based test statistics — the binned and the sliced Wasserstein distance statistics, which show comparable sensitivity to CP violation, but improved computing time and memory scalings. Finally, general extensions and applications of the introduced statistics are discussed.

Non-orientable AdS 3 and its holography

Known solutions to three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant consist of either AdS 3 or its orbifolds (or orientifolds). We geometrically derive a novel non-orientable AdS 3 spacetime that is an orientifold of a spinor double cover of AdS 3 . This spacetime’s universal cover contains a lightlike compact direction instead of AdS 3 ’s spacelike compact direction. We show that its gravity theory possesses a simpler excited state spectrum and a Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino-Witt (CS/WZW) correspondence between a single independent CS term and boundary chiral WZW term. This leads us to suggest that CS theory is able to more fully describe non-orientable pure gravity theory compared to orientable gravity.

Exact-WKB, complete resurgent structure, and mixed anomaly in quantum mechanics on S 1

We investigate the exact-WKB analysis for quantum mechanics in a periodic potential, with N minima on S 1 . We describe the Stokes graphs of a general potential problem as a network of Airy-type or degenerate Weber-type building blocks, and provide a dictionary between the two. The two formulations are equivalent, but with their own pros and cons. Exact-WKB produces the quantization condition consistent with the known conjectures and mixed anomaly. The quantization condition for the case of N-minima on the circle factorizes over the Hilbert sub-spaces labeled by discrete theta angle (or Bloch momenta), and is consistent with ’t Hooft anomaly for even N and global inconsistency for odd N. By using Delabaere-Dillinger-Pham formula, we prove that the resurgent structure is closed in these Hilbert subspaces, built on discrete theta vacua, and by a transformation, this implies that fixed topological sectors (columns of resurgence triangle) are also closed under resurgence.

The lion, the witch, and the wormhole: ensemble averaging the symmetric product orbifold

Abstract We consider the ensemble average of two dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs Sym N (𝕋 D ) over the Narain moduli space. We argue for a bulk dual given byNcopies of an abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to topological gravity, endowed with a discrete gauge symmetry exchanging theNcopies. As a check of this proposal, we calculate the ensemble average of various partition and correlation functions of the symmetric product orbifold theory and compare the resulting expressions to gauge theory quantities in the bulk. We comment on the ensemble average of the tensionless string partition function on AdS 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 by considering the specific case ofD= 4 with the addition of supersymmetry.

Semiclassics with ’t Hooft flux background for QCD with 2-index quarks

We study quantum chromodynamics including the two-index symmetric or anti-symmetric quark (QCD(Sym/ASym)) on small $\mathbb{R}^2$× T 2 with a suitable magnetic flux. We first discuss the ’t Hooft anomaly of these theories and claim that discrete chiral symmetry should be spontaneously broken completely to satisfy the anomaly matching condition. The T 2 compactification with the magnetic flux preserves the ’t Hooft anomaly, and the 2d effective theory is constrained by the same anomaly of 4d QCD(Sym/ASym). We demonstrate the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry using the dilute gas of center vortices, which confirms the prediction of the ’t Hooft anomaly. We also find that each vacuum maintains the charge conjugation symmetry, and this gives affirmative support for the nonperturbative large-N orientifold equivalence between QCD(Sym/ASym) and $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory.

Narain to Narnia

We generalize the holographic correspondence between topological gravity coupled to an abelian Chern–Simons theory in three dimensions and an ensemble average of Narain’s family of massless free bosons in two dimensions, discovered by Afkhami-Jeddi et al. and by Maloney and Witten. We find that the correspondence also works for toroidal orbifolds but not for K3 or Calabi–Yau sigma-models and not always for the minimal models. Here, we conjecture that the correspondence requires that the central charge is equal to the critical central charge defined by the asymptotic density of states of the chiral algebra. For toroidal orbifolds, we extend the holographic correspondence to correlation functions of twist operators by using topological properties of rational tangles in the three-dimensional ball, which represent configurations of vortices associated to a discrete gauge symmetry.

The mesoscale order of nacreous pearls

A pearl’s distinguished beauty and toughness are attributable to the periodic stacking of aragonite tablets known as nacre. Nacre has naturally occurring mesoscale periodicity that remarkably arises in the absence of discrete translational symmetry. Gleaning the inspiring biomineral design of a pearl requires quantifying its structural coherence and understanding the stochastic processes that influence formation. By characterizing the entire structure of pearls (~3 mm) in a cross-section at high resolution, we show that nacre has medium-range mesoscale periodicity. Self-correcting growth mechanisms actively remedy disorder and topological defects of the tablets and act as a countervailing process to long-range disorder. Nacre has a correlation length of roughly 16 tablets (~5.5 µm) despite persistent fluctuations and topological defects. For longer distances (>25 tablets ~8.5 µm), the frequency spectrum of nacre tablets follows f –1.5 behavior, suggesting that growth is coupled to external stochastic processes—a universality found across disparate natural phenomena, which now includes pearls.

3d TQFTs from Argyres–Douglas theories

We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres–Douglas theories on S 1 × M 3 with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the S 1 . For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern–Simons and Rozansky–Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the ${\left({G}_{2}\right)}_{1}$ and ${\left({F}_{4}\right)}_{1}$ Chern–Simons theories. Our construction is based on an intriguing relation between topologically twisted partition functions, wild Hitchin characters, and chiral algebras which, when combined together, relate Coulomb branch and Higgs branch data of the same 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. Finally, we test our proposal by applying localization techniques to the conjectural $\mathcal{N}=1$ UV Lagrangian descriptions of the (A 1 , A 2 ), (A 1 , A 3 ) and (A 1 , D 3 ) theories.

Finding simplicity: unsupervised discovery of features, patterns, and order parameters via shift-invariant variational autoencoders *

Abstract Recent advances in scanning tunneling and transmission electron microscopies (STM and STEM) have allowed routine generation of large volumes of imaging data containing information on the structure and functionality of materials. The experimental data sets contain signatures of long-range phenomena such as physical order parameter fields, polarization, and strain gradients in STEM, or standing electronic waves and carrier-mediated exchange interactions in STM, all superimposed onto scanning system distortions and gradual changes of contrast due to drift and/or mis-tilt effects. Correspondingly, while the human eye can readily identify certain patterns in the images such as lattice periodicities, repeating structural elements, or microstructures, their automatic extraction and classification are highly non-trivial and universal pathways to accomplish such analyses are absent. We pose that the most distinctive elements of the patterns observed in STM and (S)TEM images are similarity and (almost-) periodicity, behaviors stemming directly from the parsimony of elementary atomic structures, superimposed on the gradual changes reflective of order parameter distributions. However, the discovery of these elements via global Fourier methods is non-trivial due to variability and lack of ideal discrete translation symmetry. To address this problem, we explore the shift-invariant variational autoencoders (shift-VAEs) that allow disentangling characteristic repeating features in the images, their variations, and shifts that inevitably occur when randomly sampling the image space. Shift-VAEs balance the uncertainty in the position of the object of interest with the uncertainty in shape reconstruction. This approach is illustrated for model 1D data, and further extended to synthetic and experimental STM and STEM 2D data. We further introduce an approach for training shift-VAEs that allows finding the latent variables that comport to known physical behavior. In this specific case, the condition is that the latent variable maps should be smooth on the length scale of the atomic lattice (as expected for physical order parameters), but other conditions can be imposed. The opportunities and limitations of the shift VAE analysis for pattern discovery are elucidated.

Elasticity of two-dimensional ferroelectrics across their paraelectric phase transformation

The mechanical behavior of two-dimensional (2D) materials across 2D phase changes is unknown, and the finite temperature (T) elasticity of paradigmatic SnSe monolayers—ferroelectric 2D materials turning paraelectric as their unit cell turns from a rectangle into a square—is described here in a progressive manner. To begin with, their zero–T total energy landscape gives way to (Boltzmann-like) averages from which the elastic behavior is determined. Furthermore, these estimates are complemented with results from the strain-fluctuation method, which employs the energy landscape or ab initio molecular dynamics data. All approaches capture the coalescence of elastic moduli < C 11 (T) > = < C 22 (T) > due to the structural transformation. The broad evolution and sudden changes of elastic parameters < C 11 (T) >, < C 22 (T) >, and < C 12 (T) > of these atomically thin phase-change membranes establishes a heretofore overlooked connection among 2D materials and soft matter.

Topological enhancement of nonlinear transport in unconventional point-node semimetals

The topological singularity of the Bloch states close to the Fermi level significantly enhances nonlinear electric responses in topological semimetals. Here, we systematically characterize this enhancement for a large class of topological nodal-point fermions, including those with linear, linear-quadratic, and quadratic dispersions. Specifically, we determine the leading power-law dependence of the nonlinear response functions on the chemical potential μ defined relative to the nodal point. We identify two characteristics that qualitatively improve nonlinear transports compared to those of conventional Dirac and Weyl fermions. First, the type-II (overtilted) spectrum leads to the log μ enhancement of nonlinear response functions having zero scaling dimension with respect to μ, which is not seen in a type-I (moderately or not tilted) spectrum. Second, the anisotropic linear-quadratic dispersion increases the power of small-μ divergence for the nonlinear response tensors along the linearly dispersing direction. Furthermore, our work reveals new experimental signatures of unconventional nodal points in topological semimetals as well as provides a guiding principle for giant nonlinear electric responses.
