Vibrational-excitation cross sections of water molecules by electron impact

A crossed-beam technique was used to measure absolute differential cross sections for the vibrational excitation of water-vapor molecules. The energy and angular range were from 2.2 to 20 eV and from 30 to 150 deg. Vibrational-excitation cross sections were determined for the bending (010) and stretching (100 and 001) modes of the electronic ground state. It is shown that the integral cross sections are generally larger than those of Seng and Linder (1976) by 10-20 percent for both the bending and stretching modes. It is noted that the results obtained are of interest in connection with the theoretical modeling of cometary ionospheres.

Inclusive dielectron cross sections in p + p and p + d interactions at beam energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV

Measurements of dielectron production in p + p and p + d collisions with beamkinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p + d to p + p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p + d and p + p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. The beam energy dependence of the integrated cross sections is also presented.

Electron scattering distributions as a probe of adsorbate orientation - CO and N2

The differential cross section for elastic electron scattering by adsorbed CO and N2 is calculated. The dependence of this cross section on the azimuthal angle of detection depends on the molecular orientation and can be used to differentiate between a molecule lying flat on the surface, a tilted molecule, and an upright one. For molecules lying flat on the surface, the orientation of the molecular axis and of the C and O atoms with respect to the plane of incidence of the electron can be determined.

Application of the Schwinger multichannel formulation to electron-impact excitation of the B 1Sigma(+)u state of H2

The paper reports cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the X 1Sigma(+)g - BISigma(+)u transition in H2 for collision energies of 15, 20, and 30 eV. For this dipole-allowed transition with its associated long-range potential, the contributions of the more strongly scattered low-angular-momentum partial waves to the cross section were obtained from a two-state Schwinger multichannel calculation, and a modified Born-closure scheme was used to include the contributions from the remaining weakly scattered partial waves. Agreement between the calculated differential cross sections and available experimental data is encouraging.

Stimulated Raman shifting of the Nd:YAG fourth harmonic (266 nm) in H2, HD, and D2

The dependence of the first Stokes stimulated Raman conversion efficiency of fourth-harmonic radiation from a Nd:YAG laser at 266 nm has been studied for the isotopic species H2, HD, and D2 as a function of gas pressure and laser energy using a low numerical aperture (about 0.0045) pumping geometry. While the laser energy threshold for first Stokes conversion varies significantly among the species, photon conversion efficiencies of at least 50 percent can be achieved for all of them for laser pump energies at 266 nm of 50 mJ/pulse or less. This study provides a new measurement of the differential cross section for stimulated Raman scattering in HD of 8.1 + or - 2.4 x 10 to the -29th sq cm/sr at 266 nm and at high pressures, and agreement is found with previous measurements of the cross sections for H2 and D2. The results have been used to optimize the laser transmitter system for a differential-absorption lidar to measure tropospheric ozone concentration profiles.

Near-Threshold Rovibrational Excitation of HF by Electron Impact

The pronounced threshold peaks found in cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the vibrational levels of HF have been studied using an R-matrix method, in which electron exchange, correlation effects and polarization are included. Vibration is modelled inside the R-matrix sphere using the energy-modified adiabatic phase matrix method (EMAP). Rotation of the target molecule is treated outside the R-matrix sphere, using the frame transformation method. The external rovibronic close-coupling equations are solved by analytic methods. Analysis of the multichannel threshold structures indicates that the peaks found for rovibrational excitation of nu = 1 can be interpreted as virtual states while those for nu = 2 correspond to nuclear-excited Feshbach resonances. These two different results correspond simply to a change of sign of a small parameter that is determined by the threshold analysis. Whereas the overall shapes of the excitation peaks agree with earlier theoretical results, we have found detailed rotational fine structures for scattering energies on the order of the rotational constant above and below the opening of the vibrational channels. The partial and total cross sections for rovibrational state-to-state transitions in the energy region of the peaks are analysed. Characteristic cusp structures and excitation peaks are found at the rovibrational thresholds for transitions with small angular momentum transfer (Delta)j =0, 1 and 2. Differential cross sections are similar to recent measurements. These experimental data do not show the relatively sharp rise at the vibrational thresholds indicated by theory. Theory and experiment are in good agreement for the shape and magnitude of the angular dependence of cross sections for rovibrational state-to-state transitions, especially at larger energies.

A calculation of the 1S-2S transition in He/+/ induced by electron impact

Integrated cross sections, at electron impact energies of 3.0 to 3.3 Ryd, for the 1S-2S transition in He(+) are in reasonable agreement with experiments by Peart and Dolder (1973). A variant of the distorted-wave procedure is used and briefly described. In addition, the differential cross sections for the 1S-2S transition at impact energies of 3.005, 3.010, and 3.200 Ryd are presented.

Efficiencies for production of atomic nitrogen and oxygen by relativistic proton impact in air

Relativistic electron and proton impact cross sections are obtained and represented by analytic forms which span the energy range from threshold to 1 GeV. For ionization processes, the Massey-Mohr continuum generalized oscillator strength surface is parameterized. Parameters are determined by simultaneous fitting to (1) empirical data, (2) the Bethe sum rule, and (3) doubly differential cross sections for ionization. Branching ratios for dissociation and predissociation from important states of N2 and O2 are determined. The efficiency for the production of atomic nitrogen and oxygen by protons with kinetic energy less than 1 GeV is determined using these branching ratio and cross section assignments.

Absolute elastic differential electron scattering cross sections in the intermediate energy region. III - SF6 and UF6

A recently developed technique has been used to measure the ratios of elastic differential electron scattering cross sections (DCS) for SF6 and UF6 to those of He at electron impact energies of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 75 eV and at scattering angles of 20 to 135 deg. In order to obtain the absolute values of DCS from these ratios, He DCS of McConkey and Preston have been employed in the 20 to 90 deg range. At angles in the 90 to 135 deg range the recently determined cross sections of Srivastava and Trajmar have been utilized. From these DCS, elastic integral and momentum transfer cross sections have been obtained.

Delta excitations and shell-model information in heavy-ion, charge-exchange reactions

We calculate total cross sections for coherent pion production using localized plane-wave approximations for the shell-structure of valence nucleons that are excited to delta particles in the intermediate state in the (12C, 12B) and (12C, 12N) charge-exchange, heavy-ion reactions. We find comparable agreement to projectile downshift data for 12C(12C, 12B)12N. Then we improve the formalism by replacing the localized plane wave bound states with harmonic oscillator states which are imbedded in a multipole expansion approach and calculate pion differential cross sections to test for the sensitivity of the spectra to the single-particle mass parameter.

Asymptotic form of the charge-exchange cross section in three-body rearrangement collisions

A three-body general-type rearrangement collision is considered in which the initial and final bound states are described by hydrogen-like wave functions. It is shown that the charge-exchange amplitude in the first Born approximation can be expanded at all incident energies in terms of the inverse powers of the principal quantum number (n). By expanding the exchange amplitude in this way, it is demonstrated conclusively that the cross section for capture into the s, p, and d states as well as for the sum over all the angular-momentum states is proportional to 1/n-cubed plus terms proportional to higher inverse odd powers of n. It is found that the low-lying levels cannot be scaled to the 1/n-cubed law irrespective of the value of the incident energy except in the case of capture into the s states in accordance with the Oppenheimer-Brinkman-Kramers approximation. Zeros and minima in the differential cross sections are given in the limit of high principal quantum number for electron capture by protons from atomic hydrogen and for positronium formation by proton-atomic hydrogen collisions.

Pion Production Data Needed for Space Radiation

A recent discovery concerning the importance of hadron production in space radiation is that pions can contribute up to twenty percent of the dose from galactic cosmic ray interactions (S. Aghara, S. Blattnig, J. Norbury, R. Singleterry, Nuclear Instruments and Methods, Vol. 267, 2009, p. 1115). Although the contribution for dose equivalent will be smaller, the dose contribution could be important for fluence based radiation models. Pion production cross sections will be an essential ingredient to such models, and it is of interest to investigate the adequacy of the pion production experimental data base for energies relevant to space radiation. The pion production threshold in nucleon - nucleon reactions is at 280 MeV and, in an interesting accident of nature, this lies near the peak of the galactic cosmic ray proton spectrum. Therefore, pion production data are needed from threshold up to energies around 50 GeV/nucleon, where the galactic cosmic ray fluence is of decreasing importance. Total and differential cross section data for pion production in this energy range will be reviewed. The availability and accuracy of theoretical models will also be discussed. It will be shown that there are a significant lack of data in this important energy range and that theoretical models still need improvement.

New parameter-free polarization potentials in low-energy positron collisions

The polarization potential plays a decisive role in shaping up the cross sections in low energy positron collisions with atoms and molecules. However, its inclusion without involving any adjustable parameter, is still a challenge. Various other techniques employed so far for positron collisions are summarized, and a new, nonadjustable and very simple form of the polarization potential for positron-atom (molecule) collisions below the threshold of positronium formation is discussed. This new recently proposed potential is based on the correlation energy of a single positron in a homogeneous electron gas. The correlation energy was calculated by solving the Schrodinger equation of the positron-electron system and fitted to an analytical form in various ranges of the density parameter. In the outside region, the correlation energy is joined smoothly with the correct asymptotic form. This new positron correlation polarization (PCOP) potential was tested on several atomic and molecular targets such as the Ar, CO, and CH4. The results on the total and differential cross sections on these targets are shown along with the experimental data where available.
