Search for the NΔ resonance in the 𝛾𝑑 → 𝑑𝜋 +𝜋 − reaction

A dibaryon which is an object with baryon number B = 2 has been studied for a long time. Dyson and Xuong classified non-strangeness dibaryon states based on SU(6) symmetries in 1960?s. In the framework, the deuteron is classified as one of the sextet states of dibaryons. Although dibaryon have been an interesting subject of research for a long time, most of the experimental studies up to the early 2000?s were unsuccessful. The CELCIUS/WASA collaboration reported this state via the double-pionic fusion reaction (?= ! 3c0c0) in 2009. Thereafter, the WASA-at-COSY collaboration revealed properties of the isoscaler resonance state via the ?= ! 3c0c0 reaction in 2011. The dibaryon resonance state with isospin ? = 0 and spin ( = 3 thought to be a ?03 which was predicted by Dyson and Xuong at 2.35 GeV?22 with a configuration of ??. The reported mass and width of that state were 2?37 GeV?22 and 0?07 GeV?22, espectively. The mass was ?0?08 GeV?22 smaller than that of 2?, the width was narrower than that of single ?. This surprising result made dibaryon study come back into the limelight. ?12 is one of the dibaryon states classified by Dyson and Xuong with isospin ? = 1, spin ( = 2. This state can be regarded as an s-wave #? resonance. ?12 is an interesting state from the point of view of the possibilities of existence as an internal structure of ?03 and contribution to many-body effects in nuclei. Though there were some experimental clues and theoretical studies of this state, it was unclear whether the obtained experimental results represented a real resonance or not due to the difficulty of separation from kinematical effects. Very recently, the FOREST group at Tohoku University reported a photoproduced isovector dibaryon state at mass of 2.14 GeV?22 in the 3c0 invariant mass spectra of the W3 ! 3c0c0 reaction. The most probable ?% configuration was 2¸ although they didn?t exclude the possibility of ?% = 1¸ or 3?. They separated the dibaryon production process from conventional pion production process for the first time using angular distribution of deuteron. We investigated the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction for study of a possible #? dibaryon state using a deuterium target at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University, Japan. In the experiment, ?3 ? 1012 tagged photon beam at energies ranging from 0.8 to 1.1 GeV was impinged to the liquid deuterium target (?520 mg?cm2) and the charged particles in the final state: deuteron, c¸, and c?, were detected by a magnetic spectrometer with a large solid angle named NKS2. NKS2 had capabilities of reconstructing momentum of charged particles, multi-track analysis, and ??c separation. We performed two different analyses named 2-track analysis and 3-track analysis. The 2-track (3-track) analysis was for events in which two (three) particles of 3c¸c? in the final state, including deuteron, were detected by NKS2. In the 3-track and 2-track analysis, ?2000? ?15000 events were identified as the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction events, respectively. The 2-track analysis with higher statistics was mainly used to derive the cross sections, and the 3-track analysis was used to check the consistency of the 2-track analysis. In this thesis, we have shown the total cross section, the differential cross sections of the W3 ! 3c¸c? reaction in the region of jC j ¡ 0?15 GeV2. This is the world?s first measurement of this reaction in this energy region. Dibaryon resonance structures were observed below the #? threshold in the differential cross section of the invariant mass of 3c?. The mass and width of the structure were consistent with these of ?12 measured by the W3 ! 3c0c0 reaction. The mechanism of the production process was discussed based on the angular distribution of emitted deuteron.

Proposed Methodology for Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation begins by providing an overview of the research and discusses recent efforts in validating thermal neutron scattering cross sections, including differential cross section measurements at ORNL for evaluation and validation, total cross section measurements at RPI, pulsed-neutron die-away experiments at LLNL, and integral criticality experiments by LLNL. The presentation also proposes a methodology not only for validating thermal scattering files that utilizes all available experimental data, but also for evaluating new libraries as demonstrated on polystyrene. In conclusion, polystyrene evaluation was conducted using multiple experiments, including differential and integral. The proposed methodology has been shown to improve neutron transport and files have been submitted to NNDC for inclusion in ENDF/B-VIII.1 release. MCT-012 & PCM-002 has been relatively insensitive to changes in $\mathcal{S}(α,β)$. The research found that differences in differential results don’t always propagate to differences in integral results, hence why evaluation of differential data important. Future work on the project is also discussed.

Differential elastic electron scattering cross sections for SO2

Differential cross sections for elastic electron scattering by SO2 were measured by utilizing a modulated, crossed-beam method and calibration against He. The energy and angular ranges were from 5 to 50 eV and from 12 to 156 deg, respectively. The present results are compared with earlier data of Orient et al. (1982), and it is suggested that their cross section values should be increased by about a factor of two.

State-Selective Double Photoionization of Atomic Carbon and Neon

Double photoionization (DPI) allows for a sensitive and direct probe of electron correlation, which governs the structure of all matter. For atoms, much of the work in theory and experiment that informs our fullest understanding of this process has been conducted on helium, and efforts continue to explore many-electron targets with the same level of detail to understand the angular distributions of the ejected electrons in full dimensionality. Expanding on previous results, we consider here the double photoionization of two 2p valence electrons of atomic carbon and neon and explore the possible continuum states that are connected by dipole selection rules to the coupling of the outgoing electrons in 3P, 1D, and 1S initial states of the target atoms. Carbon and neon share these possible symmetries for the coupling of their valence electrons. Results are presented for the energy-sharing single differential cross section (SDCS) and triple differential cross section (TDCS), further elucidating the impact of the initial state symmetry in determining the angular distributions that are impacted by the correlation that drives the DPI process.

Interpretations of the ATLAS measurements of Higgs boson production and decay rates and differential cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the Higgs boson production times decay rates and differential cross-sections have recently been performed by the ATLAS experiment in several decay channels using up to 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. This paper presents multiple interpretations of these Higgs boson measurements. Measurements of production-mode cross-sections, simplified template cross-sections and fiducial differential cross-sections in different decay channels are reparameterised in terms of the impact of Standard Model effective field theory operators, and constraints are reported on the corresponding Wilson coefficients. Production and decay rate measurements are interpreted in UV-complete extensions of the Standard Model, namely the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) near the alignment limit and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) for various MSSM benchmark scenarios. The constraints on the 2HDM parameters (cos(β - α), tanβ) and the MSSM parameters (m A , tanβ) are complementary to those obtained from direct searches for additional Higgs bosons.

Differential cross-section for positronium formation in electron-atomic hydrogen collisions

The L=0 and 1 partial wave amplitudes obtained by a two-state coupled static approximation with correlation with the L greater than or equal to 2 Born amplitudes were combined to obtain the differential cross section for positronium formation in electron-atomic hydrogen collisions. For positron energies of 0.64 and 0.75 ryd, minima at the scattering angles of 57 deg and 51 deg are found. Total cross sections for positronium formation for low and intermediate impact energies are given. Measurement of the differential cross section for the process positron + helium yields positronium + helium ion for the detection of possible minima is suggested.

Photoproduction of Lambda* Resonances using the CLAS Detector

This thesis presents the study of the reaction yp -> K^+Lambda* using the photo production data from the CLAS-g12 experiment performed in Hall B of Jefferson Laboratory. The decay of Lambda* resonances, Lambda(1520), Lambda(1670), and Lambda(1690), into two exclusive channels, Sigma+pi?and Sigma-pi+, is studied from the detected K+,pi+, and pi?particles. This work aims at understanding photoproduction mechanism to excited state baryons, and to facilitate phenomenological model predictions using precision experimental measurements. A good agreement is established for the Lambda(1520) differential cross sections with the previous CLAS measurements. The differential cross sections as a function of CM angle are extended to higher photon energies. Newly added are the differential cross sections as a function of invariant 4-momentum transfer, which is the natural variable to use for a theoretical model based on a Regge-exchange reaction mechanism. No new N* resonances decaying into the K+Lambda(1520) final state are found. The higher mass resonances, Lambda(1670)1/2- and Lambda(1690)3/2-, are studied for the first time using photoproduction. This work provides a model dependent preliminary cross sections for these excited states.

Production of η and η ′ mesons in p p and p Pb collisions

The production of η and η ′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV . The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5 < y c . m . < 3.5 (forward rapidity) and − 4.0 < y c . m . < − 3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η and η ′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5 < p T < 10 GeV and 3 < p T < 10 GeV , respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η and η ′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η mesons are also used to calculate η / π 0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as η and η ′ meson fragmentation. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Cross Section Measurement of Exclusive ¿-Meson Electroproduction off the Proton at CLAS12

This analysis studies the exclusive ¿ meson electroproduction process ep ¿ e 'p ' at CLAS12 in the kinematic region 0.39 = Q2 = 8.38 GeV2 , 1.97 = W = 4.03 GeV, and 0.17 = -t = 7.26 GeV2 . Cross section s(Q2 , W) and differential cross section ds dt (Q2 , W, t) measurements are reported. The scaling of the overall cross section was determined to be 1/Q6.47±0.97, which is consistent with the Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) prediction of 1/Q6 . The ratios of the longitudinal and transverse cross sections, R = sL sT , are extracted from the angular decay distributions for four values of Q2 and are found to be consistent with the GPD scaling prediction. The mean-square gluonic radius of the proton ¿b 2 ¿g is extracted from the t-dependence of the differential cross sections ds dt in the kinematic region 0.12 = xB = 0.39, the first such measurement in the valence regime.

Elastic scattering of electrons from SO2

A crossed electron beam-molecular beam scattering geometry and the relative-flow technique are used to measure the ratios of the elastic differential cross sections of SO2 to those of He at electron impact energies of 12, 20, 50, 100, 150, and 200 eV. At each energy, an angular range of 15-150 deg is covered. The ratios are multiplied by previously known He elastic differential cross sections to obtain elastic differential cross sections for SO2. Integral and momentum transfer cross sections are then determined from a knowledge of differential cross sections. With the aid of the two-potential theory of e-molecule scattering, calculations are also performed and compared with the measurements.

Differential cross-section measurements for the electroweak production of dijets in association with a Z boson in proton–proton collisions at ATLAS

Differential cross-section measurements are presented for the electroweak production of two jets in association with a Z boson. These measurements are sensitive to the vector-boson fusion production mechanism and provide a fundamental test of the gauge structure of the Standard Model. The analysis is performed using proton–proton collision data collected by ATLAS at √s=13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The differential cross-sections are measured in the Z→ℓ + ℓ - decay channel (ℓ=e,μ) as a function of four observables: the dijet invariant mass, the rapidity interval spanned by the two jets, the signed azimuthal angle between the two jets, and the transverse momentum of the dilepton pair. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are sufficiently precise to distinguish between different state-of-the-art theoretical predictions calculated using Powheg+Pythia8, Herwig7+Vbfnlo and Sherpa 2.2. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions using a dimension-six effective field theory. The measurement of the signed azimuthal angle between the two jets is found to be particularly sensitive to the interference between the Standard Model and dimension-six scattering amplitudes and provides a direct test of charge-conjugation and parity invariance in the weak-boson self-interactions.

Differential cross-sections for events with missing transverse momentum and jets measured with the ATLAS detector in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions

Measurements of inclusive, differential cross-sections for the production of events with missing transverse momentum in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV are presented. The measurements are made with the ATLAS detector using an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 and include measurements of dijet distributions in a region in which vector-boson fusion processes are enhanced. They are unfolded to correct for detector resolution and efficiency within the fiducial acceptance, and are designed to allow robust comparisons with a wide range of theoretical predictions. A measurement of differential cross sections for the Z → νν process is made. The measurements are generally well-described by Standard Model predictions except for the dijet invariant mass distribution. Auxiliary measurements of the hadronic system recoiling against isolated leptons, and photons, are also made in the same phase space. Ratios between the measured distributions are then derived, to take advantage of cancellations in modelling effects and some of the major systematic uncertainties. These measurements are sensitive to new phenomena, and provide a mechanism to easily set constraints on phenomenological models. To illustrate the robustness of the approach, these ratios are compared with two common Dark Matter models, where the constraints derived from the measurement are comparable to those set by dedicated detector-level searches.

Measurement of the Z boson differential production cross section using its invisible decay mode (Z$\nu\bar{\nu}$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson. The measured total fiducial cross section for events with Z boson transverse momentum greater than 200 GeV is $ {3000}_{-170}^{+180} $ fb.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Simultaneous Unbinned Differential Cross-Section Measurement of Twenty-Four Z+jets Kinematic Observables with the ATLAS Detector

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins. In this analysis, a machine learning method called omnifold is used to produce a simultaneous measurement of twenty-four Z +jets observables using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Unlike any previous fiducial differential cross-section measurement, this result is presented unbinned as a dataset of particle-level events, allowing for flexible reuse in a variety of contexts and for new observables to be constructed from the twenty-four measured observables.

Differential cross-section measurements of the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 . The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

Absolute elastic differential electron scattering cross sections in the intermediate energy region. IV - CO

Using a crossed electron beam-molecular beam scattering geometry and a relative-flow technique, ratios of elastic differential cross sections of CO to those of He have been measured at electron impact energies of 3, 5, 7.5, 9.9, 15, 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100 eV. At each energy, an angular range of 15 to 130 deg has been covered. These ratios have been multiplied by previously known He elastic differential cross sections to obtain elastic differential cross sections for CO. Since pure rotational excitations were not resolved, the elastic differential cross sections are a sum of elastic and pure rotational excitations at room temperature. From a knowledge of differential cross sections (DCS), integral and momentum transfer cross sections have been calculated. Both the DCS and integral cross sections are compared at 50, 75, and 100 eV to a recent two-potential theory of e-molecule scattering. Present results show that the isoelectronic molecules CO and N2 have very similar magnitudes and shapes of their differential cross sections.

Measurements of top-quark pair single- and double-differential cross-sections in the all-hadronic channel in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS detector

Differential cross-sections are measured for top-quark pair production in the all-hadronic decay mode, using proton-proton collision events collected by the ATLAS experiment in which all six decay jets are separately resolved. Absolute and normalised single- and double-differential cross-sections are measured at particle and parton level as a function of various kinematic variables. Emphasis is placed on well-measured observables in fully reconstructed final states, as well as on the study of correlations between the top-quark pair system and additional jet radiation identified in the event. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb - 1 . The rapidities of the individual top quarks and of the top-quark pair are well modelled by several independent event generators. Significant mismodelling is observed in the transverse momenta of the leading three jet emissions, while the leading top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark pair transverse momentum are both found to be incompatible with several theoretical predictions.
