A measurement of the relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of the degenerate He(plus) n equals 4 levels

The relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of helium by 200 eV electrons into the 4S, 4P, 4D and 4F levels have been measured via a fast delayed coincidence technique. Results are in poor agreement with Born approximation calculations for simultaneous ionization and excitation of helium, the 4P component being larger than expected.

The relativistic equations of stellar structure and evolution. Stars with degenerate neutron cores. 1: Structure of equilibrium models

The general relativistic equations of stellar structure and evolution are reformulated in a notation which makes easy contact with Newtonian theory. Also, a general relativistic version of the mixing-length formalism for convection is presented. Finally, it is argued that in previous work on spherical systems general relativity theorists have identified the wrong quantity as "total mass-energy inside radius r."

A study of axonal degeneration in the optic nerves of aging mice

The optic nerves of C57BL/6J mice ranging from 3 to 30 months were examined by electron microscopy. At all ages investigated, optic nerve axons contained enlarged mitochondria with abnormal cristae. With increasing age, a large number of necrotic axons were observed and were in the process of being phagocytized. The abnormal mitochondria may represent preliminary changes that eventually lead to necrosis of the axon.

Soft X-ray observations of degenerate dwarfs and cataclysmic variables

Observations in outburst of two dwarf novae, SS Cyg and U Gem, reveal soft, pulsed X-ray emission greatly enhanced over the emission present during the quiescent periods. In order to characterize the nature of the X-ray pulsations a random phase analysis was carried out, which indicated the phase of SS Cyg behaved like a random variable with zero mean and an r.m.s. value that increased with the square root of the time. Attention is also given to the properties of the detected dwarf novae during optical quiescences, to isolated white dwarfs, and to optical observations of AM Her. It is concluded that the dwarf novae, which occur in binary systems, appear to be controlled by the varying accretion of matter generated by the main sequence companion, and that the X-ray emission during outburst appears to consist of two separate components: a periodically varying (on about a 10 s timescale) soft component, together with a more slowly randomly varying hard component.

Coordinated IUE, Einstein and optical observations of accreting degenerate dwarfs

Three binary systems believed to be composed of a white dwarf and a late type star, AM Her, SS Cyg, and U Gem were observed simultaneously in the IV X-ray and optical wavelengths. The system AM Her was in its customary high state at the time of the observations, while SS Cyg and U Gem were in a low state. In all three cases, a significant UV black body component with KT approximately greater than 10 eV was found. The flux in this component is in excess of the amount predicted by current scenarios of gravitational energy release.

Continuum and line spectra of degenerate dwarf X-ray sources

Recent observations of X-ray sources are summarized. Unresolved issues concerning these sources are discussed and an outline of the kinds of X-ray observations that would best advance the understanding of these sources is presented.
