Relevance of anisotropy in the Kondo effect: Lessons from the symplectic case

A Kondo model with symplectic symmetry was recently put forward as the effective low-energy theory of a superconducting-island device coupled to multiple leads. This model, which possesses non-Fermi liquid physics and effective anyons, was argued to belong to the class of topological Kondo effects. Here, we clarify the extent of stability of its exotic fixed point using perturbative and numerical renormalization group in conjunction with bosonization and conformal field theory. In contrast to previous claims, we show that asymmetry in the coupling to the leads destabilizes the non-Fermi liquid. Other destabilizing perturbations include asymmetry in the superconducting pairing or internal energy of the individual quantum dots in the island. Nevertheless, these perturbations all generate the same relevant operators. Thus, only a small number of couplings need to be tuned individually, and these can be selected according to experimental convenience. Our results highlight a common misconception that anisotropy in single-channel Kondo couplings is always irrelevant. As demonstrated, relevant terms will emerge whenever the group generators do not span the full space of impurity operators. This calls for a more detailed inspection of models that exhibit this property, such as large-spin impurities and SO⁡( M ) Kondo models.

Eigenstate Entanglement: Crossover from the Ground State to Volume Laws

For the typical quantum many-body systems that obey the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), we argue that the entanglement entropy of (almost) all energy eigenstates is described by a single crossover function. The ETH implies that the crossover functions can be deduced from subsystem entropies of thermal ensembles and have universal properties. These functions capture the full crossover from the ground-state entanglement regime at low energies and small subsystem size (area or log-area law) to the extensive volume-law regime at high energies or large subsystem size. For critical one-dimensional systems, a universal scaling function follows from conformal field theory and can be adapted for nonlinear dispersions. We use it to also deduce the crossover scaling function for Fermi liquids in d > 1 dimensions. Here, the analytical results are complemented by numerics for large noninteracting systems of fermions in d ≤ 3 dimensions and have also been confirmed for bosonic systems and nonintegrable spin chains.

Topological symplectic Kondo effect

Multiple conduction channels interacting with a quantum impurity—a spin in the conventional “multichannel Kondo effect” or a topological mesoscopic device (“topological Kondo effect”)—has been proposed as a platform to realize anyonic quasiparticles. However, the above implementations require either perfect channel symmetry or the use of Majorana fermions. Here, in this work, we propose a Majorana-free mesoscopic setup which implements the Kondo effect of the symplectic Lie group and can harbor emergent anyons (including Majorana fermions, Fibonacci anyons, and parafermions) even in the absence of perfect channel symmetry. In addition to the detailed prescription of the implementation, we present the strong coupling solution by mapping the model to the multichannel Kondo effect associated to an internal symmetry and exploit conformal field theory to predict the nontrivial scaling of a variety of observables, including conductance, as a function of temperature. This work does not only open the door for robust Kondo-based anyon platforms, but also sheds light on the physics of strongly correlated materials with competing order parameters.

Entanglement phase transitions in random stabilizer tensor networks

Here we explore a class of random tensor network models with “stabilizer” local tensors which we name random stabilizer tensor networks (RSTNs). For RSTNs defined on a two-dimensional square lattice, we perform extensive numerical studies of entanglement phase transitions between volume-law and area-law entangled phases of the one-dimensional boundary states. These transitions occur when either (a) the bond dimension D of the constituent tensors is varied or (b) the tensor network is subject to random breaking of bulk bonds, implemented by forced measurements. In the absence of broken bonds, we find that the RSTN supports a volume-law entangled boundary state with bond dimension D ≥ 3 where D is a prime number, and an area-law entangled boundary state for D = 2. Upon breaking bonds at random in the bulk with probability p, there exists a critical measurement rate p c for each D ≥ 3 above which the boundary state becomes area-law entangled. To explore the conformal invariance at these entanglement transitions for different prime D, we consider tensor networks on a finite rectangular geometry with a variety of boundary conditions, and extract universal operator scaling dimensions via extensive numerical calculations of the entanglement entropy, mutual information, and mutual negativity at their respective critical points. Our results at large D approach known universal data of percolation conformal field theory, while showing clear discrepancies at smaller D, suggesting a distinct entanglement transition universality class for each prime D. We further study universal entanglement properties in the volume-law phase and demonstrate quantitative agreement with the recently proposed description in terms of a directed polymer in a random environment.

The five-point bootstrap

We study five-point correlation functions of scalar operators in d-dimensional conformal field theories. We develop a new approach to computing the five-point conformal blocks for exchanged primary operators of arbitrary spin by introducing a generalization of radial coordinates, using an appropriate ansatz, and perturbatively solving two quadratic Casimir differential equations. We then study five-point correlators 〈σσϵσσ〉 in the critical 3d Ising model. We truncate the operator product expansions (OPEs) in the correlator by including a finite number of primary operators with conformal dimension below a cutoff ∆ ⩽ ∆ cutoff . We then compute several OPE coefficients involving ϵ and two spinning operators by demanding that the truncated correlator approximately satisfies the crossing relation.

Efficient simulation of low-temperature physics in one-dimensional gapless systems

Here, we discuss the computational efficiency of the finite-temperature simulation with minimally entangled typical thermal states (METTS). To argue that METTS can be efficiently represented as matrix product states, we present an analytic upper bound for the average entanglement Rényi entropy of METTS for a Rényi index 0 < q ≤ 1. In particular, for one-dimensional (1D) gapless systems described by conformal field theories, the upper bound scales as O⁡(cN 0 ⁢log⁡β) where c is the central charge and N is the system size. Furthermore, we numerically find that the average Rényi entropy exhibits a universal behavior characterized by the central charge and is roughly given by half of the analytic upper bound. Based on these results, we show that METTS can provide a speedup compared to employing the purification method to analyze thermal equilibrium states at low temperatures in 1D gapless systems.

Holomorphic modular bootstrap revisited

In this work we revisit the “holomorphic modular bootstrap”, i.e. the classification of rational conformal field theories via an analysis of the modular differential equations satisfied by their characters. By making use of the representation theory of PSL(2, $\mathbb{Z}_n$), we describe a method to classify allowed central charges and weights (c, h i ) for theories with any number of characters d. This allows us to avoid various bottlenecks encountered previously in the literature, and leads to a classification of consistent characters up to d = 5 whose modular differential equations are uniquely fixed in terms of (c, h i ). In the process, we identify the full set of constraints on the allowed values of the Wronskian index for fixed d ≤ 5.

Cosmological quasiparticles and the cosmological collider

The interplay between cosmology and strongly coupled dynamics can yield transient spectral features that vanish at late times, but which may leave behind phenomenological signatures in the spectrum of primordial fluctuations. Of particular interest are strongly coupled extensions of the standard model featuring approximate conformal invariance. In flat space, the spectral density for a scalar operator in a conformal field theory is characterized by a continuum with scaling law governed by the dimension of the operator, and is otherwise featureless. Anti–de Sitter/conformal field theory arguments suggest that for large 𝑁, in an inflationary background with Hubble rate 𝐻, this continuum is gapped. We demonstrate that there can be additional peak structures that become sharp and particlelike at phenomenologically interesting regions in parameter space, and we estimate their contribution to cosmological observables. We find phenomena that are potentially observable in future experiments that are unique to these models, including displaced oscillatory features in the squeezed limit of the bispectrum. These particles can be either fundamental, and localized to a UV brane, or composite at the Hubble scale, 𝐻, and bound to a horizon in the bulk of the 5D geometry. We comment on how stabilization of conformal symmetry breaking vacua can be correlated with these spectral features and their phenomenology.

Four-point correlation modular bootstrap for OPE densities

In this work we apply the lightcone bootstrap to a four-point function of scalars in two-dimensional conformal field theory. We include the entire Virasoro symmetry and consider non-rational theories with a gap in the spectrum from the vacuum and no conserved currents. For those theories, we compute the large dimension limit (h/c >> 1) of the OPE spectral decomposition of the Virasoro vacuum. We then propose a kernel ansatz that generalizes the spectral decomposition beyond h/c >> 1. Finally, we estimate the corrections to the OPE spectral densities from the inclusion of the lightest operator in the spectrum.

Mutual information superadditivity and unitarity bounds

We derive the property of strong superadditivity of mutual information arising from the Markov property of the vacuum state in a conformal field theory and strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy. We show this inequality encodes unitarity bounds for different types of fields. These unitarity bounds are precisely the ones that saturate for free fields. This has a natural explanation in terms of the possibility of localizing algebras on null surfaces. A particular continuity property of mutual information characterizes free fields from the entropic point of view. We derive a general formula for the leading long distance term of the mutual information for regions of arbitrary shape which involves the modular flow of these regions. We obtain the general form of this leading term for two spheres with arbitrary orientations in spacetime, and for primary fields of any tensor representation. For free fields we further obtain the explicit form of the leading term for arbitrary regions with boundaries on null cones.

The Pollica perspective on the (super)-conformal world

This manuscript samples a series of recent results in the quest for a systematic understanding of the space of conformal field theories, with a particular focus on theories with extended supersymmetry. The large majority of results reported here were presented during the second Pollica summer workshop which took place from June 3–21 2019 and focused on mathematical and geometric tools for superconformal field theories. Furthermore, this manuscript represents in many ways a partial summary of the workshop.

Model-dependence of minimal-twist OPEs in d > 2 holographic CFTs

Following recent work on heavy-light correlators in higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with a large central charge C T , we clarify the properties of stress tensor composite primary operators of minimal twist, [ T m ], using arguments in both CFT and gravity. We provide an efficient proof that the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^m\right]\right\rangle$, where ${\mathcal{O}}_L$ is any light primary operator, is independent of the purely gravitational action. Next, we consider corrections to this coupling due to additional interactions in AdS effective field theory and the corresponding dual CFT. When the CFT contains a non-zero three-point coupling $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle$, the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^2\right]\right\rangle$ is modified at large C T if $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle \sim \sqrt{C_T}$. This scaling is obeyed by the dilaton, by Kaluza-Klein modes of prototypical supergravity compactifications, and by scalars in stress tensor multiplets of supersymmetric CFTs. Quartic derivative interactions involving the graviton and the light probe field dual to ${\mathcal{O}}_L $ can also modify the minimal-twist couplings; these local interactions may be generated by integrating out a spin- ℓ ≥ 2 bulk field at tree level, or any spin ℓ at loop level. These results show how the minimal-twist OPE coefficients can depend on the higher-spin gap scale, even perturbatively.

On de Sitter spacetime and string theory

We review various aspects of de Sitter spacetime in string theory: its status as an Effective Field Theory spacetime solution, its relation to the vacuum energy problem in string theory, its (global) holographic definition in terms of two entangled and noncanonical conformal field theories as well as a realization of a realistic de Sitter universe endowed with the observed visible matter and the necessary dark sector in order to reproduce the realistic cosmological structure. In particular, based on the new insight regarding the cosmological constant problem in string theory, we argue that in a doubled, [Formula: see text]-duality-symmetric, phase-space-like and noncommutative generalized-geometric formulation, string theory can naturally lead to a small and positive cosmological constant that is radiatively stable and technically natural. Such a formulation is fundamentally based on a quantum spacetime, but in an effective spacetime description of this general formulation of string theory, the curvature of the dual spacetime is the cosmological constant of the observed spacetime, while the size of the dual spacetime is the gravitational constant of the same observed spacetime. Also, the three scales associated with intrinsic noncommutativity of string theory, the cosmological constant scale, the Planck scale as well as the Higgs scale, can be arranged to satisfy various seesaw-like formulae. Along the way, we show that these new features of string theory can be implemented in a particular deformation of cosmic-string-like models.

On the conformal symmetry of exceptional scalar theories

The DBI and special galileon theories exhibit a conformal symmetry at unphysical values of the spacetime dimension. We find the Lagrangian form of this symmetry. The special conformal transformations are non-linearly realized on the fields, even though conformal symmetry is unbroken. Commuting the conformal transformations with the extended shift symmetries, we find new symmetries, which when taken together with the conformal and shift symmetries close into a larger algebra. For DBI this larger algebra is the conformal algebra of the higher dimensional bulk in the brane embedding view of DBI. For the special galileon it is a real form of the special linear algebra. We also find the Weyl transformations corresponding to the conformal symmetries, as well as the necessary improvement terms to make the theories Weyl invariant, to second order in the coupling in the DBI case and to lowest order in the coupling in the special galileon case.

Shift Symmetries and AdS/CFT

Massive fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space enjoy galileon-like shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We explore how these shift symmetries are realized through the boundary conformal field theory (CFT), at the level of the 2-point functions. In the alternate quantization scheme in which the dual conformal field gets the smaller Δ - conformal dimension, the shift symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the dual CFT, so that only shift invariant operators are true conformal primary fields. In the standard quantization scheme the shift symmetry acts on the source, leading to Ward identities that take the form of integral constraints.

Bounding irrelevant operators in the 3d Gross-Neveu-Yukawa CFTs

We perform a numerical bootstrap study of scalar operators in the critical 3d Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models, a family of conformal field theories containing N Majorana fermions in the fundamental representation of an O(N) global symmetry. We compute rigorous bounds on the scaling dimensions of the next-to-lowest parity-even and parity-odd singlet scalars at N = 2, 4, and 8. All of these dimensions have lower bounds greater than 3, implying that there are only two relevant singlet scalars and placing constraints on the RG flow structure of these theories.

Resurgence, conformal blocks, and the sum over geometries in quantum gravity

In two dimensional conformal field theories the limit of large central charge plays the role of a semi-classical limit. Certain universal observables, such as conformal blocks involving the exchange of the identity operator, can be expanded around this classical limit in powers of the central charge c. This expansion is an asymptotic series, so — via the same resurgence analysis familiar from quantum mechanics — necessitates the existence of non-perturbative effects. In the case of identity conformal blocks, these new effects have a simple interpretation: the CFT must possess new primary operators with dimension of order the central charge. This constrains the data of CFTs with large central charge in a way that is similar to (but distinct from) the conformal bootstrap. We study this phenomenon in three ways: numerically, analytically using Zamolodchikov’s recursion relations, and by considering non-unitary minimal models with large (negative) central charge. In the holographic dual to a CFT2, the expansion in powers of c is the perturbative loop expansion in powers of ћ. So our results imply that the graviton loop expansion is an asymptotic series, whose cure requires the inclusion of new saddle points in the gravitational path integral. In certain cases these saddle points have a simple interpretation: they are conical excesses, particle-like states with negative mass which are not in the physical spectrum but nevertheless appear as non-manifold saddle points that control the asymptotic behaviour of the loop expansion. This phenomenon also has an interpretation in SL(2, R) Chern-Simons theory, where the non-perturbative effects are associated with the non-Teichmüller component of the moduli space of flat connections.
