Investigation of gold embrittlement in connector solder joints

An investigation was performed to determine to what extent typical flight connector solder joints may be embrittled by the presence of gold. In addition to mapping of gold content in connector solder joints by an electron microprobe analyzer, metallographic examinations and mechanical tests (thermal shock, vibration, impact and tensile strength) were also conducted. A description of the specimens and tests, a discussion of the data, and some conclusions are presented.

A proposed adjustable RF cable connector

In system that requires negligible loss, it may be necessary to adjust cable length to exact multiple of transmitted wavelength. Adjustable cable connector saves time and cost by eliminating need to add to or cut from cable. Device was especially designed for use with high frequencies. For particular application, connector of suitable dimensions should be used.

Stringer, E. J.↗

MSFC connector development

NASA flat conductor cable connectors with individually sealed contacts are described. Descriptions of the design, main features, contact spring, connector electrical data, dimensions and weight, FCC termination, and keying system for plug and receptacle are included.

Angele, W.↗

Connector interchangeability

The application is discussed of the general rules of ANSI Y14.5 in designing connectors for interchangeability, and lowering costs. The general rules are applied to actural connector designs, and existing specifications are identified that (1) reject better quality products than those accepted, (2) accept products which should be rejected, and (3) impose unnecessary, nonfunctional costly requirements.

Cables and connectors: A compilation

A compilation is presented that reflects the uses, adaptation, and maintenance plus service, that are innovations derived from problem solutions in the space R and D programs, both in house and by NASA and AEC contractors. Data cover: (1) technology revelant to the employment of flat conductor cables and their adaptation to and within conventional systems, (2) connectors and various adaptations, and (3) maintenance and service technology, and shop hints useful in the installation and care of cables and connectors.

Cables and connectors: A compilation

A technological compilation on devices and techniques for various types of electrical cables and connections is presented. Data are reported under three sections: flat conductor cable technology, newly developed electrical connectors, and miscellaneous articles and information on cables and connector techniques.

Choosing the right connector

User design handbook for electrical connection describes general features of representative connectors their shell or body, insert, contacts, coupling, mounting, accession. It discusses electrical performance and mechanical requirements handbook guides designs in selecting electrical connectors according to total system concept.

Automatic connector joins structural columns

Connector snap-locks over toothed bolthead mounted on column end, forming rigid joint that will not bend or twist. Connector is used in conventional construction to install temporary structures or as mechanical coupler. Up to nine receptacles can be clustered in one node to join up to nine converging columns.

Connector for Composite Tubes

Difficulties in joining tubular structural members made of composite materials are overcome by improved conectors. Connectors are made from same composite as structural shapes, eliminating stress and weight problems experienced with metal connectors. Composites allow joint strength to be optimized by properly choosing fiber orientation and fabric. Only two basic shapes are required to make 90 degrees and T-joints in plane. Used to assemble strong, lightweight, three-dimensional structures.

Jig Quickly Checks Connector Pin Alinement

Test jig checks whether pins of connector are within location tolerance. Jig greatly reduces test time. Machined slots on opposite faces of plate form matrix of rectangular windows at intersections. If connector pin is out of alinement, it makes electrical contact with side of window, triggering indicator.

Self-Locking Connector

Connector lock resists vibration, automatically compensates for wear, and exhibits no backlash when parts are seated. Mechanism built into coupling nut on outer connector body. Outer collar turned clockwise to tighten treaded coupling nut, transmitting torque to coupling nut through six radially oriented pins.

Gaspar, K.↗

Latching Mechanism for Umbilical Connectors

Electromechanical interface transfers electric power, data and coolant from one system to another. Motor-actuated jackscrew moves connector on active half of interface to mating connector on passive half. Originally suggested for spacecraft, concept adaptable to underwater connections.

Burns, G. C.↗

Reusable High-Pressure Connector

Fluid line connector for high pressure tests has split ferrule, nut, and O-ring seal. Following test, ferrule nut, and O-ring fitting are removed leaving line unaltered except for bushing braze to free end. Connector assures strong joint for high-pressure testing without redundant parts requiring postest debrazing.

Nonlinear Analysis of a Bolted Marine Riser Connector Using NASTRAN Substructuring

Results of an investigation of the behavior of a bolted, flange type marine riser connector is reported. The method used to account for the nonlinear effect of connector separation due to bolt preload and axial tension load is described. The automated multilevel substructing capability of COSMIC/NASTRAN was employed at considerable savings in computer run time. Simplified formulas for computer resources, i.e., computer run times for modules SDCOMP, FBS, and MPYAD, as well as disk storage space, are presented. Actual run time data on a VAX-11/780 is compared with the formulas presented.
