Chain friction system gives positive, reversible drive

By cementing a strip of an elastomer to the smooth metal rim of the pulley and neoprene covered idlers providing suitable tension to the chain around the pulley, a positive reversible drive is accomplished more quietly and with less vibration.

Integral coolant channels supply made by melt-out method

Melt-out method of constructing strong, pressure-tight fluid coolant channels for chambers is accomplished by cementing pins to the surface and by depositing a melt-out material on the surface followed by two layers of epoxy-resin impregnated glass fibers. The structure is heated to melt out the low-melting alloy.

Coating permits use of strain gage in water and liquid hydrogen

Strain gage installation covered with a three-layer coating of commercial materials makes measurements in water and liquid hydrogen. It consists of a selected foil strain gage bonded with a modified commercial heat-curring epoxy cement. The outer protective layer of the gage installation may develop cracks when immersed in liquid hydrogen.

Cork is used to make tooling patterns and molds

Sheet and waste cork are cemented together to provide a tooling pattern or mold. The cork form withstands moderately high temperatures under vacuum or pressure with minimum expansion, shrinkage, or distortion.

Alignment tool facilitates pin placement on irregular horizontal surfaces

Alignment tool facilitates spotting and cementing plastic pins on the true vertical to irregular concave and convex surfaces. The tool consists of a wood tripod with individually adjustable legs, a wood block with a hole for placing the pins and two spirit levels at a 90 degree angle for easy alignment.

Spray-on electrodes enable EKG monitoring of physically active subjects

Easily applied EKG electrodes monitor the heart signals of human subjects engaged in various physical exercises. The electrodes are formed from an air drying, electrically conductive cement mixture that can be applied to the skin by means of a modified commercially available spray gun.

An explosion-proof battery case

Battery case, equipped with relief valve, connector, and two covers, separates the explosive mixture from all potential spark sources. Bottom ends of vent tubes are cemented into cell vents and upper ends fit through the gas barrier cover. This arrangement isolates generated gases from the electric power.

Improved protection for silicon solar cells

Fluorinated ethylene propylene /FEP/ film is substituted for epoxy cement in bonding glass covers to silicon solar cells. Insensitivity of FEP to ultraviolet radiation reduces requirement for filtering and does not impair cell performance. Cell costs are reduced and cover mounting is simplified.

Strain gage installation manual

Detailed specifications for installing laboratory strain gages are compiled into handy reference manual that provides laboratory technicians with ready source of instructions on techniques and procedures for cementing a wide variety of strain gages onto most of the commonly encountered engineering materials.

Bileaf mechanical strain gage

Bileaf lever detects small deformations by highly magnifying linear displacements. Device is applicable to force measuring instruments, pressure cells, temperature gages, existing strain gages, dial gages, or extensometers. Additional magnification is obtained by cementing a small mirror to mobile end of bileaf.

Distribution of Apollo 15 lunar samples: News release

More than 2200 Apollo 15 samples and polished thin sections weighing a total of about three kilograms will be distributed to 201 principal investigators for study during the next year. The scientific investigations will provide detailed information on the samples' mineralogy, petrology, chemistry, age, and history and on the effects of micrometeorite impacts, solar radiation, and cosmic ray bombardment. Preliminary examination of samples show the Apollo 15 material to be of three types: dark colored iron-rich basalts associated with mare and rille formation; a few basalts enriched in feldspar collected near the Apennine front; and light colored fragmental rocks or breccias consisting of soil-like materials which were cemented together or of rock fragments which were welded together by partial remelting.
