ATP synthesis in Halobacterium saccharovorum: evidence that synthesis may be catalysed by an F0F1-ATP synthase

Halobacterium saccharovorum synthesized ATP in response to a pH shift from 8 to 6.2. Synthesis was inhibited by carbonyl cyanide m-chloro-phenylhydrazone, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and azide. Nitrate, an inhibitor of the membrane-bound ATPase previously isolated from this organism, did not inhibit ATP synthesis. N-Ethymaleimide, which also inhibited this ATPase, stimulated the production of ATP. These observations suggested that H. saccharovorum synthesized and hydrolysed ATP using different enzymes and that the vacuolar-like ATPase activity previously described in H. saccharovorum was an ATPase whose function is yet to be identified.

Reliable IR Line Lists for N2O and OCS Isotopologues for High Temperature Applications up to 2000 K

To address the needs of planetary and exoplanetary atmosphere studies towards JWST, HWO and future IR astronomy missions, theoretical IR line lists of Carbonyl Sulfide (OCS) and Nitrous Oxide (N2O) are generated to provide complete, reliable, and consistent IR reference data in the range of 0 - 15,000 cm-1, or wavelength longer than 0.67 Å, for temperature up to 2000 K. The line lists are quantum mechanically computed using spectroscopically accurate potential energy surfaces empirically refined with reliable high-resolution experimental data, and high-quality dipole moment surfaces constructed at CCSD(T) level with aug-cc-pVT/Q/5(+d)Z basis and extrapolations to complete basis set limit. The Ames N2O line list includes the primary isotopologue 14N2 16O (denoted "446") with J=0-210 and E' up to 25,000 cm-1, and 11 minor isotopologues of 15N and 17/18O with J=0-150 and lower E' cutoffs. For OCS, Ames "natural" 296 K line list includes 12 most abundant isotopologues. The intensity contribution of OCS minor isotopologues at higher temperature is non-negligible, e.g., 8.6 ± 4.9% at 1000 K. The 16O12C32S (93.7%) and 16O12C34S (4.2%) transitions are computed with J=0-240 and E'< 22,000 cm-1, plus J=0-150 and E' < 16,000 cm-1 for five more minor isotopologues. Reliable Effective Hamiltonian models (e.g., NOSL-296 for 14N2 16O), experimental data collections, and reliable HITRAN or MARVEL levels are combined with quantum rovibrational calculations to deliver accurate and consistent empirical corrections for line positions. The reliability and accuracy of our IR intensity predictions are demonstrated by comparison with available databases, line lists, and experiments, at both room temperature and at high temperature. The line lists will be freely available to public online at ZENODO and NAS data portal. We acknowledge the financial support from NASA XRP and APRA programs.

Solvent effects and other factors in carbenic and cationic pi cyclizations. I.

The susceptibility of the decomposition of the tosylhydrazones of simple carbonyl compounds to changes in the proton-donating ability (protonicity) of the solvent have long been known, but only recently has the mechaninistic path of this reaction been explored in detail. The nature of the products in tosylhydrazone decomposition (and thus by inference the nature of the intermediates) has been found to depend on (1) the protonicity of the solvent, (2) the concentration of the base, and (3) the nature of the cation association with the base. in recent deuterium-labelling studies on the base-catalyzed decomposition of the tosylhydrazones of cyclopropanecarboxaldehyde (I), norbornan-2-one (II), and camphor (III), evidence has accumulated for the existence of two distinct paths involving a "carbonic" and a "cationic" intermediate in this reaction depending on the reaction conditions. Present evidence indicates that the observed products from tosylchydrazone decomposition arise from either a carbene or a diazonium salt, generated from an intermediate diazo compound. In the absence of a Lewis acid, there is no present evidence to support a carbonium ion as an intermediate in the protonic decomposition of tosylhydrazones.

Technology Development of a Biowaste Resistojet, Volume 2

The thruster development effort of the biowaste resistojet program is reported. Under this program, several variations of the concentric tube resistojet were built and tested. Because of the corrosive nature of the biowaste gases available for propellants, thruster effort was concentrated on the use of noble metals (platinum and its alloys) for the critical center tube heating element. This tube must operate at high temperatures. Initially the biowaste gases were projected to be CO2, CH4, H2O or H2 with only very small amounts of O2 or N2. However, during 1971, results from experimental life support tests indicated that the oxygen content would probably be in the range from 0.5 to 1.0%. To achieve the desired high specific impulses, metal temperatures as high as 1700 K (3060 R) were considered desirable goals. The first thruster, designated Mark 1, employed the alloy platinum-rhodium for the center tube. Although this material was oxidation resistant and had high strength relative to pure platinum, experimental materials tests showed that this alloy suffered from carbonyl reactions when tested on pure CO2. These reactions resulted in a depletion of rhodium and significantly weakened the tubes. The next series of thrusters were designated Mark 2 and employed platinum-iridium for the center tubes.

Mass spectrometry in structural and stereochemical problems. CXCIX.

Electron-impact induced fragmentations of o-, m-, and p-hydroxyalkylphenones and their trimethylsilyl (TMS) ethers are studied by means of high-resolution mass spectrometry, metastable defocusing, and deuterium labeling of the TMS ether derivatives. A markedly increased methyl radical loss from the o-TMS ether is attributed to a proximity effect. Minor fragmentation was observed with m- and p-isomers. Significantly intense doubly-charged ions were formed from ketonic cleavage and by the loss of a TMS methyl radical. The sequence of fragmentation was found to depend on the size of the alkyl group attached to the ketone carbonyl.

Characteristics of capacitor-type micrometeoroid flux detectors when impacted with simulated micrometeoroids

A series of impact tests are described and data presented which characterize the operation of the capacitor-type micrometeoroid flux detectors used on the Meteoroid Technology Satellite (MTS). Capacitor-type detectors with silicon dioxide dielectric thickness of 0.4 and 1.0 microns were tested in the micrometeoroid impact simulator at the Langley Research Center, a 4-MV Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator. The carbonyl iron projectiles were from 0.5 to 5.0 microns in diameter with velocities from 4 to 10.0 km/sec. The detector bias voltage was varied from -20 to -60 V; some tests were at detector temperatures of 90 C to -100 C; and the angle of impact varied from 0 deg to 75 deg from the normal to the detector. These tests showed that: (1) the detector operation is reliable when the bias voltage is greater than 30 V; (2) after an impact the detector returns to its original condition with an insignificant loss of active area; and (3) the sensitivity of the detector is inversely proportional to the detector thickness. The test results suggest a theoretical model in which the signal is an arc triggered by the impacting projectile, and the detector bias voltage must be high enough to insure that an arc will form.

The vapor pressure of iron pentacarbonyl

Vapor pressure measurements have been made on pure iron pentacarbonyl between +31 and -19 C. The experimental results may be expressed by the logarithm of pressure (mm Hg) to the base 10 equals -(2096.7 K/T) + 8.4959, which corresponds to a heat of vaporization for the liquid carbonyl of delta H ? (9.588 plus or minus 0.12) kcal/mole. This result confirms and extends the earlier measurements made by Trautz and Badstuebner between 0 and 140 C. The need for careful purification of commercially available iron pentacarbonyl is emphasized, particularly for establishing the correct vapor pressure below 45 C.

A flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence kinetics study of the reaction S/3P/ + OCS

Using the technique of flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence, the reaction of ground-state atomic sulfur with carbonyl sulfide has been investigated over the temperature range from 233 to 445 K. Over this temperature range, the experimental data were fitted to an Arrhenius equation of the form k sub 1 = (1.52 plus or minus 0.20) x 10 to the minus 12th power exp(-3.63 plus or minus 0.12 kcal/mol/RT) cu cm/molecule/sec. A comparison of these results with previous investigations on this reaction system is presented.

Photochemistry of interstellar molecules

The role of photochemistry in determining the lifetime of interstellar molecules is considered. The probability of photodecomposition depends on three factors, including the absorption cross section, the quantum yield or probability of dissociation following photon absorption, and the interstellar radiation field. A more detailed discussion of the photochemistry of five molecules is presented, giving attention to carbonyl sulfide, methyl acetylene, nitric oxide, acetylene, and benzene. Lifetimes of interstellar molecules in unobscured regions are in the range from 5 to 100 years. It is concluded that polyatomic molecules can exist only in dense clouds which protect them from the full interstellar radiation field.

Analytical study of spacecraft deposition contamination by internal reflection spectroscopy

The in-situ vacuum chamber designed around the IRE was tested under vacuum. The contamination analyzer system was tested using two liquid contaminant materials. The analysis of the contaminants on the SL-4 rendezvous window shows that the material has methyl silicone, hydroxyl, and carbonyl radicals. The analysis of the outgassing material from Shuttle TPS shows silicone as the primary product.
