Photonuclear Production of Radioxenon for Air Samples

Radioxenon plays an important role in ensuring compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty due to its ability to be transported through the atmosphere, as well as the fact that the half-lives of its isotopes provide a window long enough to be detected but not long enough that it could become background radiation. This allows it to be correlated with specific events that indicate the testing of nuclear weapons. Idaho National Laboratory supports this mission by providing spiked air samples for monitoring stations to enable instrument calibration and ensure measurement accuracy. We tested a photonuclear method of producing one of the main isotopes of radioxenon, Xe-135. We also tested the separation of Xe-135 from the parent isotope Xe-136 using the method of kinematic recoil. Aluminum coils were placed in quartz ampoules filled with enriched Xe-136 and were irradiated by a bremsstrahlung beam with an endpoint energy of 21 MeV. The results showed that we were not only successful in producing Xe-135 but also that the Xe-135 was deposited into the coil allowing it to be removed from the Xe-136 gas. The coil and the Xe-135 can then be chemically separated. At the time of counting the coil, it was calculated that there was about 18 Bq of activity from Xe-135 remaining in the coil. Future work includes determining the optimal material and geometry of the catcher to maximize the amount of Xe-135 captured.

Benchmark Testing of Two Residential Refrigerators Using R-600a

Household refrigerators provide a convenient and safe means of food preservation and storage. More than 100 million refrigerators are used in US homes, resulting in significant primary energy consumption and carbon emissions. As a greenhouse gas with a 100-year global warming potential of 1,430, R-134a has been banned in new US domestic refrigerators and freezers since 2021, and R-600a with a global warming potential of 3 is widely employed as a working fluid in the current US household refrigerator market. In this paper, benchmark testing was conducted for two 2023 refrigerators using R-600a. Moreover, the effect of representative customer use patterns, such as door opening and warm food storage, was studied to evaluate the effect on the energy consumption of the refrigerators. These results will provide background knowledge for facilitating the integration of new technologies to achieve significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions in future efficient refrigerators.

Novel Photonuclear Methods to Produce an Argon-37 Standard

The mission of this research is to explore novel photonuclear-based pathways into the production of 37Ar. Above-background detection levels of 37Ar uniquely indicates the occurrence of an underground nuclear explosion, produced from fission neutrons interacting in the surrounding environment through the 40Ca(n,a)37Ar reaction. The half-life of 35 days allows on-site inspectors (OSI) adequate time following the nuclear event to detect 37Ar and verify compliance or defiance of non-proliferation treaties such as the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). An 37Ar standard would give OSI the ability to calibrate their detectors and measure detector efficiency allowing for the quantification of detected activity, give OSI authentic samples to test detectors in field exercises, and improve models predicting diffusion pathways of 37Ar through the underground environment.

Mechanical and biochemical recovery of landfill waste in an underserved community

Historically in the United States, waste collected for recycling has been sold and shipped to processors in China. In 2013 and 2018, China introduced the Green Fence and National Sword policies which restricts the import of contaminated materials and banned the import of many recyclables. The cost of recycling in the United States has increased following these policy changes, which has led to many communities reducing their recycling programs or halting them altogether. Rural and underserved communities that don’t have resources to afford sophisticated recycling programs have been heavily impacted. Previous work at INL demonstrated that MSW is a potentially viable feedstock for both biochemical and thermochemical conversion. The goal of this project is to assess preprocessing tools that can produce consistent feedstocks that meet conversion specifications, remove problematic contaminants, and reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled. Municipal solid waste was collected from an underserved community in southeast Idaho, contaminants were characterized, and mechanically separated into two discrete fractions. The unit operations identified during mechanical separation trials will be mobilized to on-site with a goal of 50% recovery of paper and plastic waste.

Fast Determination of Lithium Content in Spent Cathodes for Direct Battery Recycling

Determination of the lithium ion content in cathode materials, which is currently performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), involves tedious procedures and error-prone preparation. This work introduces a new methodology to quickly determine the lithium content in spent cathode materials (LiNix Mny Coz O2, x + y + z = 1, NMC) using a thermalgravimetric analysis, which bypasses the use of ICP-MS and significantly reduces the cost and time required for determining the lithium content. Based on this new method, a new approach is developed to identify spent cathode materials suitable for direct relithiation recycling. Finally, these new methods have been applied to investigate the effectiveness of direct electrochemical-relithiation on recycling the spent cathodes, and provide insights for future development of direct battery materials recycling.

Hypothesis tests on Rayleigh wave radiation pattern shapes: a theoretical assessment of idealized source screening

SUMMARY Shallow seismic sources excite Rayleigh wave ground motion with azimuthally dependent radiation patterns. We place binary hypothesis tests on theoretical models of such radiation patterns to screen cylindrically symmetric sources (like explosions) from non-symmetric sources (like non-vertical dip-slip or non-VDS faults). These models for data include sources with several unknown parameters, contaminated by Gaussian noise and embedded in a layered half-space. The generalized maximum likelihood ratio tests that we derive from these data models produce screening statistics and decision rules that depend on measured, noisy ground motion at discrete sensor locations. We explicitly quantify how the screening power of these statistics increase with the size of any dip-slip and strike-slip components of the source, relative to noise (faulting signal strength) and how they vary with network geometry. As applications of our theory, we apply these tests to (1) find optimal sensor locations that maximize the probability of screening non-circular radiation patterns and (2) invert for the largest non-VDS faulting signal that could be mistakenly attributed to an explosion with damage, at a particular attribution probability. Finally, we quantify how certain errors that are sourced by opening cracks increase screening rate errors. While such theoretical solutions are ideal and require future validation, they remain important in underground explosion monitoring scenarios because they provide fundamental physical limits on the discrimination power of tests that screen explosive from non-VDS faulting sources.

Ionic Dopant-Induced Ordering Enhances the Thermoelectric Properties of a Polythiophene-Based Block Copolymer

Conjugated polymer-based block copolymers (CP-BCPs) are an unexplored class of materials for organic thermoelectrics. In this study, the authors report on the electronic conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (α) of a newly synthesized CP-BCP, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly (oligo-oxyethylene methacrylate) (P3HT-b-POEM), upon solution co-processing with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and subsequently vapor-doping with a molecular dopant, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ). It is found that the addition of the hydrophilic block POEM greatly enhances the processability of P3HT, enabling homogeneous solution-mixing with LiTFSI. Notably, interactions between P3HT-b-POEM with ionic species significantly improve molecular order and unexpectedly cause electrical oxidizing doping of P3HT block both in solution and solid-states, a phenomenon that has not been previously observed in Li-salt containing P3HT. Vapor doping of P3HT-b-POEM-LiTFSI thin films with F4TCNQ further enhances σ and yields a thermoelectric power factor PF = α 2 σ of 13.0 μW m -1 K -2 , which is more than 20 times higher than salt-free P3HT-b-POEM sample. Through modeling thermoelectric behaviors of P3HT-b-POEM with the Kang-Snyder transport model, the improvement in PF is attributed to higher electronic charge mobility originating from the enhanced molecular ordering of P3HT. The results demonstrate that solution co-processing CP-BCPs with a salt is a powerful method to control structure and performance of organic thermoelectric materials.

The Key Role of Grain Boundary Dynamics in Revolutionizing the Potential of Solid Electrolytes

Solid electrolytes (SEs) have the potential to enhance the safety and performance of Li-metal batteries. However, the existence of grain boundaries in polycrystalline SEs presents a significant challenge for both ionic and electronic migration, promoting the propagation of detrimental lithium dendrites. This study compares the roles of grain boundaries in electrical properties of three distinct SEs including garnet-type Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 (LLZO), argyrodite-type Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSC), and NASICON-type Li 1+x+y Al x (Ti,Ge) 2-x Si y P 3-y O 12 (LATP). Results demonstrate that the electronic and ionic conductivities of solid-state electrolytes are affected differently by grain boundaries, depending on the specific type of electrolyte. For instance, LLZO and LATP experience dielectric breakdown at 3.7 and 5.3 V, respectively, while LPSC does not exhibit such behavior. Here, a new chemical modification is proposed that simultaneously alters the composition of both the surface and grain boundaries of SEs, ultimately reducing electronic conductivity for the LLZO SEs. Consequently, the proposed LLZO exhibits unprecedented dendrite-free cycling stability, achieving a remarkable 12 000-h lifetime at room temperature, surpassing conventional strategies such as surface coatings in dendrite mitigation. This study highlights the significance of modifying grain boundaries to design safe and durable Li-metal batteries. It provides new insights for developing SEs that are highly resistant to dendrite formation.

3D–Integrated, Multi–Functional Carbon Fibers for Stable, High–Areal–Capacity Batteries

Increasing lithium-ion batteries' (LIBs) electrode areal capacity can boost energy density and lower manufacturing costs, but faces challenges in manufacturing, rate performance, and cycling stability. A conductive framework made of commercial micro-sized carbon fibers (Cfs) is presented that serves as a host for both the LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC 532) cathode and Cfs anode. The Cf framework has multiple functions that offer high electronic conductivity (270 mS cm –1 ), low tortuosity (1.7), low Li + diffusion resistance (22 Ω), and high thermal conductivity (200 W mK –1 ). Additionally, the Cf-integrated electrodes can have an extremely high mass loading of NMC 532 (70 mg cm –2 ) with a theoretical capacity of 14 mAh cm –2 . Thus, the practical full cells assembled with the Cfs-enabled electrodes exhibit an initial areal capacity of 4.1 mAh cm –2 and capacity retention of 90.4% at 500 cycles at a cycling rate of C/3, 1.5 mA cm –2 . Data collected from the operando isothermal microcalorimetry suggest that full cells utilizing the Cf anode experience less heat release from side reactions compared to cells utilizing a conventional graphite anode. Finally, this present approach is scalable and cost-effective and can fabricate practical LIBs that boast high areal capacity, rate performance, and a lengthy cycling lifetime.

Solvent-Free Manufacturing of Lithium-Ion Battery Electrodes via Cold Plasma

Slurry casting has been used to fabricate lithium-ion battery electrodes for decades, which involves toxic and expensive organic solvents followed by high-cost vacuum drying and electrode calendering. This work presents a new manufacturing method using a nonthermal plasma to create inter-particle binding without using any polymeric binding materials, enabling solvent-free manufacturing electrodes with any electrochemistry of choice. The cold-plasma-coating technique enables fabricating electrodes with thickness (>200 μm), high mass loading (>30 mg cm -2 ), high peel strength, and the ability to print lithium-ion batteries in an arbitrary geometry. This crosscutting, chemistry agnostic, platform technology would increase energy density, eliminate the use of solvents, vacuum drying, and calendering processes during production, and reduce manufacturing cost for current and future cell designs. Here, lithium iron phosphate and lithium cobalt oxide were used as examples to demonstrate the efficacy of the cold-plasma-coating technique. It is found that the mechanical peel strength of cold-plasma-coating-manufactured lithium iron phosphate is over an order of magnitude higher than that of slurry-casted lithium iron phosphate electrodes. Full cells assembled with a graphite anode and the cold-plasma-coating-lithium iron phosphate cathode offer highly reversible cycling performance with a capacity retention of 81.6% over 500 cycles. For the highly conductive cathode material lithium cobalt oxide, an areal capacity of 4.2 mAh cm -2 at 0.2 C is attained. We anticipate that this new, highly scalable manufacturing technique will redefine global lithium-ion battery manufacturing providing significantly reduced plant footprints and material costs.

Amount and reactivity of dissolved organic matter export are affected by land cover change from old‐growth to second‐growth forests in headwater ecosystems

Abstract Headwater forest ecosystems of the western USA generate a large portion of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) transported in streams across North America. Land cover changes that alter forest structure and species composition affect the quantity and composition of DOM transferred to aquatic ecosystems. Clear‐cut harvesting affects ~1% of the forest area of North America annually, leaving most western forests in varying stages of regrowth and the total area of old‐growth forest is decreasing. The consequences of this widespread management practice on watershed carbon cycling remain unknown. We investigated the role of land cover change, because of clear‐cut harvesting, from mixed‐species old‐growth to lodgepole pine‐dominated second‐growth forest on the character and reactivity of hillslope DOM exports. We evaluated inputs of DOM from litter leachates and export of DOM collected at the base of trenched hillslopes during a 3‐year period (2016–2018) at the Fraser Experimental Forest in north‐central Colorado, USA. Dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved nitrogen were higher in lateral subsurface flow draining old‐ versus second‐growth forest. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the DOM exported from the old‐growth forest was more heterogeneous and aromatic and that proteinaceous, microbially processed DOM components were more prevalent in the second‐growth forest. Biological oxygen demand assays revealed much lower microbial metabolism of DOM in litter leachate and subsurface exports from the old‐growth forest relative to second growth. Old‐growth and second‐growth forests are co‐mingled in managed ecosystems, and our findings demonstrate that land cover change from a mixture of conifer species to lodgepole pine dominance influences DOM inputs that can increase the reactivity of DOM transferred from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems.

The Zooplankton International Geospatial dataset: A global repository of spatiotemporal freshwater zooplankton community composition data from lakes and reservoirs to support ecological research

Zooplankton transfer substantial energy in aquatic food webs and are used as indicators of environmental change. Syntheses of zooplankton community dynamics globally require datasets that span a wide range of environmental gradients; however, these datasets are limited due to methodological differences across programs, taxonomic inconsistencies, and a lack of standardized metadata. To reconcile these challenges, we created the Zooplankton International Geospatial (ZIG) dataset, which includes original zooplankton, water physical and chemical variables, and lake morphometric data from 311 inland lakes and reservoirs. ZIG includes waterbodies ranging in size from 0.005 to 82,100 km2 and spanning broad latitudinal (−47.26 to 64.90) and longitudinal ranges (−165.04 to 176.53). Temporal coverage for individual waterbodies ranges between 1 and 60 yr with sampling frequency ranging from annually to weekly. With its extensive coverage and content, we consider ZIG to be a cornerstone for future investigations of global scale lake biodiversity change.
