Dust history and physical environment near hot stars associated with nebulosity, discussing optical depths and IR energy
The CEOP Inter-Monsoon Study (CIMS) is one of the two main science drivers of CEOP that aims to (a) provide better understanding of fundamental physical processes in monsoon regions around the world, and (b) demonstrate the synergy and utility of CEOP data in providing a pathway for model physics evaluation and improvement. As the data collection phase for EOP-3 and EOP-4 is being completed, two full annual cycles (2003-2004) of research-quality data sets from satellites, reference sites, and model output location time series (MOLTS) have been processed and made available for data analyses and model validation studies. This article presents preliminary results of a CIMS study aimed at the characterization and intercomparison of all major monsoon systems. The CEOP reference site data proved its value in such exercises by being a powerful tool to cross-validate the TRMM data, and to intercompare with multi-model results in ongoing work. We use 6 years (1998-2003) of pentad CEOP/TRMM data with 2deg x 2.5deg latitude-longitude grid, over the domain of interests to define the monsoon climatological diurnal and annual cycles for the East Asian Monsoon (EAM), the South Asian Monsoon (SAM), the West Africa Monsoon (WAM), the North America/Mexican Monsoon (NAM), the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) and the Australian Monsoon (AUM). As noted, the TRMM data used in the study were cross-validated using CEOP reference site data, where applicable. Results show that the observed diurnal cycle of rain peaked around late afternoon over monsoon land, and early morning over the oceans. The diurnal cycles in models tend to peak 2-3 hours earlier than observed. The seasonal cycles of the EAM and SAM show the strongest continentality, i.e, strong control by continental processes away from the ITCZ. The WAM, and the AUM shows the less continentality, i.e, strong control by the oceanic ITCZ.

The concept of a neutral point depends on the physical phenomena described. The regions with B less than about 1 gamma detected by Schindler and Ness may be interpreted as neutral regions for the ion-tearing process. The assumption of the presence of a multiple neutral point structure (with temporal variations) is still the most promising interpretation of the Explorer 34 data. Alternatives suggested by Russell lead to difficulties. Nevertheless, the final answer can come only from multiple satellite systems. A 1-day displacement of the day count in the data discussed by Schindler and Ness is corrected.
Presentations were grouped in the following categories: (1) a technical orientation of Earth resources remote sensing including data sources and processing; (2) a review of the present status of remote sensing technology applicable to the coastal and marine environment; (3) a description of data and information needs of selected coastal and marine activities; and (4) an outline of plans for marine monitoring systems for the east coast and a concept for an east coast remote sensing facility. Also discussed were user needs and remote sensing potentials in the areas of coastal processes and management, commercial and recreational fisheries, and marine physical processes.
The physical state of the winds of B supergiants varies from one of a high level of ionization and rapid outflow to one of relatively low ionization and a moderate rate of outflow as one goes from type B0 to type A0. It is proposed here that this is the result of magnetodynamic energy being released in the mantles of these stars, much as occurs in the sun. Data are presented to show that this idea is plausible. It is noted that the release of magnetodynamic energy as the result of interaction between magnetic fields and differential motion in an inhomogeneous structure is probably the cause of the heating in all outer stellar atmospheres (mantles). In the late-type stars, the material in the mantle must first be ionized by the deposition of energy from acoustic waves; in the early-type stars, the material is already ionized at least once in the photosphere, as a result of the normal transfer of radiative energy, so no priming process is necessary for these stars.
The status of the NASA suborbital program is reviewed and its importance to astrophysical and geophysical programs is assessed. A survey of past scientific and developmental accomplishments, an examination of the trends in program costs, and an analysis of current and future program roles are included. The technical disciplines examined are primarily those of astronomy/astrophysics/solar physics and magnetospheric/ionospheric/ atmospheric physics.
The global water cycle is perhaps the most important of all the biogeochemical cycles and evaporation, which is a significant component of the water cycle, is also linked with the energy and carbon cycles. Long-term evaporation over large areas has generally been computed as the difference of precipitation and river runoff. Analysis of short-term evaporation rate and its spatial pattern, however, is extremely complex, and multispectral remotely sensed data could aid in such analysis. Multispectral data considered here are visible and near-infrared reflectances, infrared surface temperature and the 37 GHz brightness temperatures. These observations are found to be not totally independent of each other. A few of their relationships are established and discussed considering physically-based models.
The basic features of a Microwave Reflectometer Ionization Sensor (MRIS) as designed for utilization on the Aeroassist Flight Experiment are described. A parametric study of the effects of trajectory and unknowns in the thermochemical nonequilibrium models for translational and vibrational-electronic energy exchange rates, reaction rates, and the average electronic excitation level of atoms is performed to illustrate how the MRIS data may be employed for code validation. This study, implemented with program LAURA, shows a particular sensitivity of the onset and severity of an electron avalanche phenomena associated with changes in these physical models.
Thermoset and thermoplastic polyimides have complementary physical/mechanical properties. Whereas thermoset polyimides are brittle and generally easier to process, thermoplastic polyimides are tough but harder to process. It is expected that a combination of these two types of polyimides may help produce polymers more suitable for aerospace applications. Semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Networks (S-IPNs) of thermoset LaRC(Trademark)-RP46 and thermoplastic LARC(Trademark)-IA polyimides were prepared in weight percent ratios ranging from 100:0 to 0: 100. Positron lifetime measurements were made in these samples to correlate their free volume features with physical/mechanical properties. As expected, positronium atoms are not formed in these samples. The second life time component has been used to infer the positron trap dimensions. The "free volume" goes through a minimum at about 50:50 ratio, suggesting that S-IPN samples are not merely solid solutions of the two polymers. These data and related structural properties of the S-IPN samples have been discussed in this paper.
The method of harmonic linearization (harmonic balance), first proposed by N. M. Krylov and N. N. Bogolyubov for the approximate investigation of nonlinear vibrations, has been developed and received wide practical application to problems in the theory of automatic control. Recently, some doubt has been expressed on the legitimacy of application of the method to these problems, and assertions were made on the absence in them of a small parameter of any kind. Nevertheless, the method gives practical, acceptable results and is a simple and powerful means in engineering computations. Hence, the importance of questions arises as to its justification. The underlying principle of the method is the replacement of the given nonlinear equation by a linear equation. In establishing the method, a small parameter is considered whose presence makes it possible to speak, with some degree of approximation, of the solution of this new equation to the solution of the given nonlinear equation. In an article by the author, certain considerations were given on the presence of the small parameter, but this question has not as yet received a final answer. In the present report, a somewhat different approach to the problem is applied that permits: (a) establishing, in the clearest manner, the form of the presence of the small parameter in nonlinear problems of control theory, solvable by the method of harmonic linearization; (b) connecting it with previous intuitive physical concepts (with the "filter property") and extending the class of problems possessing this property; and (c) discussing various generalizations of the method.
