Search for lepton flavor-violating decay modes B 0 → K* 0 τ ± ℓ ∓ (ℓ = e, μ) with hadronic B-tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays B 0 → K *0 τ ± ℓ ∓ , where ℓ ∓ is either an electron or a muon. The results are based on 365 fb −1 and 711 fb −1 datasets collected with the Belle II and Belle detectors, respectively. We use an exclusive hadronic B-tagging technique, and search for a signal decay in the system recoiling against a fully reconstructed B meson. We find no evidence for B 0 → K* 0 τ ± ℓ ∓ decays and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of (2.9–6.4)×10 −5 at 90% confidence level.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into $b\bar{b}$ and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson (H) into a $b\bar{b}$ resonance plus missing transverse momentum is described. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 fb -1 of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The search targets events from $ZH$ production in an NMSSM scenario where H → $\tilde{χ}^0_2\tilde{χ}^0_1$, with $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ → a$\tilde{χ}^0_1$, where a is a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson and $\tilde{χ}^0_{1,2}$ are the two lightest neutralinos. The decay of the a boson into a pair of b-quarks results in a peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The final-state signature consists of two leptons, two or more jets, at least one of which is identified as originating from a b-quark, and missing transverse momentum. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations and upper limits are set on the product of cross section times branching ratio for a three-dimensional scan of the masses of the $\tilde{χ}^0_2\tilde{χ}^0_1$ and a boson.

Measurements of the branching fraction ratio $$ \mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\textrm{e}}^{+}{\textrm{e}}^{-}\right) $$ with charm meson decays

Abstract Measurements of the branching fraction ratio$$ \mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\right) $$ B ϕ → μ + μ − / B ϕ → e + e − with$$ {D}_s^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\phi $$ D s + → π + ϕ andD + → π + ϕdecays, denoted$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}^s $$ R ϕπ s and$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}^d $$ R ϕπ d , are presented. The analysis is performed using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1 ofppcollision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The branching fractions are normalised with respect to theB + →K + J/ψ(→e + e − ) andB + →K + J/ψ(→μ + μ − ) decay modes. The combination of the results yields$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}=1.022\pm 0.012\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.048\left(\textrm{syst}\right). $$ R ϕπ = 1.022 ± 0.012 stat ± 0.048 syst . The result is compatible with previous measurements of theϕ→ℓ + ℓ − branching fractions and predictions based on the Standard Model.

Lessons from LHCb and Belle II measurements of B → J/ψπ and B → J/ψK decays

The LHCb collaboration has recently measured the CP asymmetry in B + → J/ψπ + decay, while the Belle II collaboration has recently measured the CP asymmetries in B 0 →J/ψπ 0 decay. Within the Standard Model, and using flavor-SU(3) relations including first-order breaking corrections, these measurements lead to new predictions with regard to CP violation in B + → J/ψK + and B s → J/ψ$\bar{K}$ 0 decays, the difference between S ψK S and sin 2β, and the rate and CP asymmetries in B s → J/ψπ 0 decay.

Solvation Environment and Interface Dynamics of Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 Electrolytes Uncovered by Theory and Operando Optical and FTIR Spectroelectrochemistry

In this work, we evaluated two closo-borate salts (Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 ) in propylene carbonate from theoretical and experimental perspectives to understand how the coordination environment influences their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. The coordination environments of the closo-borate salts were modeled via density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). Vibrational spectra calculated from the predicted coordination environments are in agreement with experimentally measured steady-state FTIR data. This theoretical investigation also suggested that Li 2 B 12 F 12 would possess a higher ionic conductivity than Li 2 B 12 H 12 , which was corroborated experimentally. Additionally, an electrochemical cell was designed and fabricated that enabled operando optical and FTIR spectroelectrochemical (OP-IR-SEC) measurements. This allowed for the simultaneous measurement of the relative changes of species at a lithium electrode-liquid electrolyte interface and the visualization of lithium plating at the electrode surface. This technique could provide new chemical insights and potentially link optical changes at the electrode–electrolyte interface to specific chemical species in similar electrochemical systems. The Li 2 B 12 F 12 electrolyte was found to have a higher thermal stability, which may find utility in applications for batteries that are subject to high-temperature conditions.

4'-Deoxypyridoxine disrupts vitamin B 6 homeostasis in Escherichia coli K12 through combined inhibition of cumulative B 6 uptake and PLP-dependent enzyme activity

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) is the active form of vitamin B 6 and a cofactor for many essential metabolic processes such as amino acid biosynthesis and one carbon metabolism. 4’-deoxypyridoxine (4dPN) is a long known B 6 antimetabolite but its mechanism of action was not totally clear. By exploring different conditions in which PLP metabolism is affected in the model organism Escherichia coli K12, we showed that 4dPN cannot be used as a source of vitamin B 6 as previously claimed and that it is toxic in several conditions where vitamin B 6 homeostasis is affected, such as in a B 6 auxotroph or in a mutant lacking the recently discovered PLP homeostasis gene, yggS . In addition, we found that 4dPN sensitivity is likely the result of multiple modes of toxicity, including inhibition of PLP-dependent enzyme activity by 4’-deoxypyridoxine phosphate (4dPNP) and inhibition of cumulative pyridoxine (PN) uptake. These toxicities are largely dependent on the phosphorylation of 4dPN by pyridoxal kinase (PdxK).

Si content in methacrylamide-containing A- b -(B- r -C) block copolymers and its impact on reactive ion etching properties

Block copolymers (BCPs) of an A-block-(B-random-C) architecture have been explored as materials for nanolithography because the composition and chemistry of the random block enables modification of thermodynamic and wetting properties to meet manufacturing criteria. Here, in this study, A-b-(B-r-C) BCPs created by an amidation reaction of polystyrene-block-poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PPFMA) with controlled amounts of Si add insight to previous conclusions about the dual contributions of BCP chemistry and reactive ion etch (RIE) gas chemistry on etch properties. We focus on two RIE etch characteristics: organosilicon etch resistance in H 2 /N 2 plasma etching and enhanced removal of non-styrenic structures in an Ar/O 2 etch. Consistent with previous studies, higher amounts of Si result in greater etch resistance under H 2 /N 2 RIE, where at least ∼10 wt. % Si is necessary to exhibit sufficient etch resistance. By contrast, Ar/O 2 etching resulted in etch rates independent of Si content. We observe previously unreported surface roughening aligned with morphological domains during the H 2 /N 2 etch of modified PS-b-PPFMA BCPs. Limited in the amount of allowable Si to attain equal surface energy between blocks, these BCPs are further disqualified in forming a Si-containing mask. However, in an Ar/O 2 etch, the same BCPs exhibit suitable etch contrast and smooth domain structures, forming a uniform PS mask. Ultimately, this study uses the chemical flexibility of these materials to demonstrate the mechanisms of interactions between BCP and etch chemistry that must be considered to design effective materials for pattern transfer applications.

A study of $CP$ violation in the decays $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ ($h$ = $K, π$) and $B^±$ → [$π^+π^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$

The first study of CP violation in the decay mode $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$, with $h$ = $K, π$, is presented, exploiting a data sample of proton–proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . The analysis is performed in bins of phase space, which are optimised for sensitivity to local CP asymmetries. CP-violating observables that are sensitive to the angle γ of the Unitarity Triangle are determined. The analysis requires external information on charm-decay parameters, which are currently taken from an amplitude analysis of LHCb data, but can be updated in the future when direct measurements become available. Measurements are also performed of phase-space integrated observables for $B^±$ → [$K^+ K^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ and $B^±$ → [$π^+π^-π^+π^-$]$_Dh^±$ decays.

Cubic Crystal Structure Formation and Optical Properties within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Family of Semiconductors

Quaternary chalcogenide semiconductors are promising materials for energy conversion and nonlinear optical applications, with properties tunable primarily by varying the elemental composition and crystal structure. Here, we first analyze the connections among several cubic crystal structure types, as well as the orthorhombic Ag 2 PbGeS 4 -type structure, reported for select members within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compositional space. Focusing on the Ag–Pb–Si–S and Ag–Sr–Sn–S systems, we show that one structure type, with the formulas Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , is favored. We have prepared powder and single-crystal samples of Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , showing that each takes on the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group I$\bar{43}$d and is isostructural to the previously reported compound Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 . Through hybrid density functional theory calculations, these cubic compounds are demonstrated to be (quasi-)direct band gap semiconductors with high densities of states at the band maxima. Furthermore, the band-gap energies are measured by reflectance spectroscopy as 1.95(3) and 2.66(4) eV for Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , respectively. We further measure the optical properties and show the electronic band structures of three other isostructural A I –B II –M IV –X-type materials, i.e., Ag 2 Sr 3 Si 2 S 8 , Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 S 8 , and Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 , showing that the band gaps can be predictably tuned by element substitution. Detailed visual analyses of the different structures and of their relationships with other members of the Ag–B II –M IV –X compositional family provide a basis for a broader understanding of the structure formation and optoelectronic properties within the quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor family.

TOI-2374 b and TOI-3071 b: two metal-rich sub-Saturns well within the Neptunian desert

ABSTRACT We report the discovery of two transiting planets detected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), TOI-2374 b and TOI-3071 b, orbiting a K5V and an F8V star, respectively, with periods of 4.31 and 1.27 d, respectively. We confirm and characterize these two planets with a variety of ground-based and follow-up observations, including photometry, precise radial velocity monitoring and high-resolution imaging. The planetary and orbital parameters were derived from a joint analysis of the radial velocities and photometric data. We found that the two planets have masses of (57 ± 4) M⊕ or (0.18 ± 0.01) MJ, and (68 ± 4) M⊕ or (0.21 ± 0.01) MJ, respectively, and they have radii of (6.8 ± 0.3) R⊕ or (0.61 ± 0.03) RJ and (7.2 ± 0.5) R⊕ or (0.64 ± 0.05) RJ, respectively. These parameters correspond to sub-Saturns within the Neptunian desert, both planets being hot and highly irradiated, with Teq ≈ 745 K and Teq ≈ 1812 K, respectively, assuming a Bond albedo of 0.5. TOI-3071 b has the hottest equilibrium temperature of all known planets with masses between 10 and 300 M⊕ and radii less than 1.5 RJ. By applying gas giant evolution models we found that both planets, especially TOI-3071 b, are very metal-rich. This challenges standard formation models which generally predict lower heavy-element masses for planets with similar characteristics. We studied the evolution of the planets’ atmospheres under photoevaporation and concluded that both are stable against evaporation due to their large masses and likely high metallicities in their gaseous envelopes.

Precise determination of the $B^0_S - \bar {B}^0_S$ oscillation frequency

Mesons comprising a beauty quark and strange quark can oscillate between particle ($B^0_s$) and antiparticle ($\bar{B}^0_s$) flavour eigenstates, with a frequency given by the mass difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates, Δm s . Here we present a measurement of Δm s using $B^0_s$ → $D^–_sπ^+$ decays produced in proton–proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The oscillation frequency is found to be Δm s = 17.7683 ± 0.0051 ± 0.0032 ps –1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement improves on the current Δm s precision by a factor of two. We combine this result with previous LHCb measurements to determine Δm s = 17.7656 ± 0.0057 ps –1 , which is the legacy measurement of the original LHCb detector.

Search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at s = 10.745 GeV

We search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at a center-of-mass energy of 10.745 GeV, which is close to the peak of the ϒ ( 10753 ) state. We use data collected by the Belle II experiment during a special run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.8 fb − 1 . We reconstruct ω → π + π − π 0 decays and use the ω meson’s recoil mass to search for the signals. We do not find evidence for either process, and set upper limits on the corresponding Born-level cross sections of 2.5 pb and 7.8 pb, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. The χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω limit is the result of a combination of this analysis and a previous search using full reconstruction. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Basis light-front quantization for the Λ b and Σ b baryons

Within the basis light-front quantization framework, we compute the masses and light-front wave functions of the Λ b baryon and its isospin triplet counterparts Σ b + , Σ b 0 , and Σ b − using a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector. These wave functions are obtained as eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian, which incorporates the one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling and a three-dimensional confinement potential. With the quark masses and the couplings as adjustable parameters, the computed masses are set within the experimental range. The resulting predictions for their electromagnetic properties align well with other theoretical calculations. Additionally, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of these baryons are obtained for the first time, with gluon and sea quark distributions dynamically generated through QCD evolution of the valence quark PDFs. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b: Two Long-period Hot Jupiters from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite

We present the discovery of two new 10 day period giant planets from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission, whose masses were precisely determined using a wide diversity of ground-based facilities. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b have similar radii (0.99 ± 0.01 R{sub J} and 1.07 ± 0.02 R{sub J}, respectively), and orbital periods (10.3311 days and 10.6266 days, respectively), but significantly different masses (1.53 ± 0.03 M{sub J} versus 0.95 ± 0.07 M{sub J}, respectively). Both planets orbit metal-rich stars ([Fe/H] = +0.26±0.05 dex and [Fe/H] = +0.24±0.05 for TOI-481 and TOI-892, respectively) but at different evolutionary stages. TOI-481 is a M{sub ⋆} = 1.14 ± 0.02 M{sub ⊙}, R{sub ⋆} = 1.66 ± 0.02 R{sub ⊙} G-type star (T{sub eff} = 5735±72 K), that with an age of 6.7 Gyr, is in the turn-off point of the main sequence. TOI-892 on the other hand, is a F-type dwarf star (T{sub eff} = 6261±80 K), which has a mass of M{sub ⋆} = 1.28 ± 0.03 M{sub ⊙} and a radius of R{sub ⋆} = 1.39 ± 0.02 R{sub ⊙}. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b join the scarcely populated region of transiting gas giants with orbital periods longer than 10 days, which is important to constrain theories of the formation and structure of hot Jupiters.

TOI-954 b and K2-329 b: Short-period Saturn-mass Planets that Test whether Irradiation Leads to Inflation

We report the discovery of two short-period Saturn-mass planets, one transiting the G subgiant TOI-954 (TIC 44792534, V = 10.343, T = 9.78) observed in TESS sectors 4 and 5 and one transiting the G dwarf K2-329 (EPIC 246193072, V = 12.70, K = 10.67) observed in K2 campaigns 12 and 19. We confirm and characterize these two planets with a variety of ground-based archival and follow-up observations, including photometry, reconnaissance spectroscopy, precise radial velocity, and high-resolution imaging. Combining all available data, we find that TOI-954 b has a radius of 0.852{sub −0.062}{sup +0.053} R{sub J} and a mass of 0.174{sub −0.017}{sup +0.018} M {sub J} and is in a 3.68 day orbit, while K2-329 b has a radius of 0.774{sub −0.024}{sup +0.026} R{sub J} and a mass of 0.260{sub −0.022}{sup +0.020} M {sub J} and is in a 12.46 day orbit. As TOI-954 b is 30 times more irradiated than K2-329 b but more or less the same size, these two planets provide an opportunity to test whether irradiation leads to inflation of Saturn-mass planets and contribute to future comparative studies that explore Saturn-mass planets at contrasting points in their lifetimes.

Form factors for semileptonic B-decays with HISQ light quarks and clover b-quarks in Fermilab interpretation

We compute the vector, scalar, and tensor form factors for the $B\to \pi$, $B\to K$, and $B_s\to K$ amplitudes, which are needed to describe semileptonic $B$-meson decay rates for both the charged and neutral current cases. We use the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for the sea and light valence quarks. The bottom quark is described by the clover action in the Fermilab interpretation. Simulations are carried out on $N_f = 2+1+1$ MILC HISQ ensembles at approximate lattice spacings from $0.15$ fm down to $0.057$ fm. We present blinded preliminary results for the form factors.

$B \to π$, $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ from 2+1+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the hadronic form factors for $B$-meson semileptonic decays computed using the highly improved staggered quark action for both valence and sea quarks on the MILC collaborations 2+1+1-flavor ensembles with lattice spacing ranging from 0.09 fm to 0.03 fm, many with physical pion masses On our finest ensembles, we compute the form factors directly at the physical $b$-quark mass. We discuss the computational setup and analysis strategies for two- and three-point correlation functions. For $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ we present preliminary results of chiral-continuum fits for the scalar and vector form factors. The goal of this project is a percent-level determination of the scalar and vector form factors to enable high-precision determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. This work fits into a broader program of lattice-QCD studies of weak $B$-meson decays by the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations.
