Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ production in the lepton+jets channel at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, $ {\mu}_{\textrm{R}}=\frac{1}{2}{\prod}_{i=\textrm{t},\overline{\textrm{t}},\textrm{b},\overline{\textrm{b}}}{m}_{\textrm{T},i}^{1/4} $, where $ {m}_{\textrm{T},i}^2={m}_i^2+{p}_{\textrm{T},i}^2 $ are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks. The differential cross sections show varying degrees of compatibility with the theoretical predictions, and none of the tested generators with the chosen settings simultaneously describe all the measured distributions.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Ab initio evaluation of the electronic and optical properties of V B C B defect in wurtzite boron nitride as promising single-photon emitter

Single-photon emitters (SPEs) in the near-infrared (NIR) range with sharp and intense zero-phonon lines (ZPLs) of emission are critical for quantum communications. Certain local defects in wide-bandgap semiconductors create isolated occupied and unoccupied states within the bandgap of the host semiconductor and thus exhibit sharp ZPLs of emission. We designed and studied a defect in the wurtzite boron nitride as a potential SPE. It consists of a boron vacancy and a carbon atom substituting another boron atom (V B C B defect). The density of states is obtained within the GW method to identify favorable local defect states that may dominate optical transitions. The dielectric function and oscillator strength of the V B C B defect are obtained using the Bethe-Salpeter equation method to identify the optical excitations of the V B C B defect, from which we conclude that the defect could be a source of NIR emission with a narrow bright ZPL peak, thus an efficient SPE.

Understanding the Stabilization and Tunability of Divalent Europium 2.2.2B Cryptates

Lanthanides such as europium with more accessible divalent states are useful for studying redox stability afforded by macrocyclic organic ligands. Substituted cryptands, such as 2.2.2B cryptand, that increase the oxidative stability of divalent europium also provide coordination environments that support synthetic alterations of Eu(II) cryptate complexes. Two single crystal structures were obtained containing nine-coordinate Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complexes that differ by a single coordination site, the occupation of which is dictated by changes in reaction conditions. A crystal structure containing a [Eu(2.2.2B)Cl] + complex is obtained from a methanol–THF solvent mixture, while a methanol–acetonitrile solvent mixture affords a [Eu(2.2.2B)(CH 3 OH)] 2+ complex. While both crystals exhibit the typical blue emission observed in most Eu(II) containing compounds as a result of 4f 6 5d 1 to 4f 7 transitions, computational results show that the substitution of a Cl– anion in the place of a methanol molecule causes mixing of the 5d excited states in the Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complex. Additionally, magnetism studies reveal the identity of the capping ligand in the Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complex may also lead to exchange between Eu(II) metal centers facilitated by π-stacking interactions within the structure, slightly altering the anticipated magnetic moment. Finally, the synthetic control present in these systems makes them interesting candidates for studying less stable divalent lanthanides and the effects of precise modifications of the electronic structures of low valent lanthanide elements.

The co-crystal structure of Cbl-b and a small-molecule inhibitor reveals the mechanism of Cbl-b inhibition

Cbl-b is a RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligase that is expressed in several immune cell lineages, where it negatively regulates the activity of immune cells. Cbl-b has specifically been identified as an attractive target for cancer immunotherapy due to its role in promoting an immunosuppressive tumor environment. A Cbl-b inhibitor, Nx-1607, is currently in phase I clinical trials for advanced solid tumor malignancies. Using a suite of biophysical and cellular assays, we confirm potent binding of C7683 (an analogue of Nx-1607) to the full-length Cbl-b and its N-terminal fragment containing the TKBD-LHR-RING domains. To further elucidate its mechanism of inhibition, we determined the co-crystal structure of Cbl-b with C7683, revealing the compound’s interaction with both the TKBD and LHR, but not the RING domain. Here, we provide structural insights into a novel mechanism of Cbl-b inhibition by a small-molecule inhibitor that locks the protein in an inactive conformation by acting as an intramolecular glue.

Biogeochemistry of Pond B (Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA): Sediment Core, Total extraction data, Pond B Savannah River Site July 2019. Subsurface Biogeochemistry of Actinides SFA

Pond B at Savannah River Site (SRS, South Carolina) is a monomictic reservoir that received SRS R reactor cooling water from 1961–1964. Previous studies conducted between the 1980s–1990s on the water column and sediments of Pond B measured trace amounts of Pu (33 MBq 238Pu and 430 MBq 239,240Pu), 241Am, and 137Cs. Since then, the pond has been relatively isolated and the radionuclide concentrations have not been monitored over time. Herein, about 30 years after the last publication on Pond B, we are re-evaluating the geochemistry and radionuclide distribution within Pond B at four locations along a horizontal transect from the inlet to outlet. This study investigated the distribution of anthropogenic radionuclides Pu-239 and Cs-137 along with total organic carbon, iron, and trace element in contaminated sediments of Pond B at the Savannah River Site (SRS). Pond B received reactor cooling water from 1961 to 1964, and trace amounts of Pu-239 and Cs-137 during operations. Our study collected sediment cores to determine concentrations of Pu-239, Cs-137, and major and minor elements in solid phase, pore water and an electrochemical method was used on wet cores to determine dissolved elemental concentrations.

Effects of Glymes on the Distribution of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ) from the Thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2

We examined the effects of concentrations and identities of various glymes, from monoglyme up to tetraglyme, on H 2 release from the thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 at 160–200 °C for 8 h. 11 B NMR analysis shows major products of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ); however, their relative ratio is highly dependent both on the identity and concentration of the glyme to Mg(BH 4 ) 2 . Selective formation of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) was observed with an equivalent of monoglyme and 0.25 equivalent of tetraglyme. However, thermolysis of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 in the presence of stoichiometric or greater equivalent of glymes can lead to unselective formation of Mg(B 10 H 10 ) and Mg(B 12 H 12 ) products or inhibition of H 2 release.

Stress Analysis of B-52B and B-52H Air-Launching Systems Failure-Critical Structural Components

The operational life analysis of any airborne failure-critical structural component requires the stress-load equation, which relates the applied load to the maximum tangential tensile stress at the critical stress point. The failure-critical structural components identified are the B-52B Pegasus pylon adapter shackles, B-52B Pegasus pylon hooks, B-52H airplane pylon hooks, B-52H airplane front fittings, B-52H airplane rear pylon fitting, and the B-52H airplane pylon lower sway brace. Finite-element stress analysis was performed on the said structural components, and the critical stress point was located and the stress-load equation was established for each failure-critical structural component. The ultimate load, yield load, and proof load needed for operational life analysis were established for each failure-critical structural component.

Measurement of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - decay properties and search for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements are presented of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - branching fraction and effective lifetime, as well as results of a search for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay in proton-proton collisions at at the LHC. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . The branching fraction of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - decay and the effective $B_s^0$ meson lifetime are the most precise single measurements to date. No evidence for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay has been found. All results are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions and previous measurements.

Gemini Planet Imager Spectroscopy of the Dusty Substellar Companion HD 206893 B

We present new near-infrared Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) spectroscopy of HD 206893 B, a substellar companion orbiting within the debris disk of its F5V star. The J, H, K1, and K2 spectra from GPI demonstrate the extraordinarily red colors of the object, confirming it as the reddest substellar object observed to date. The significant flux increase throughout the infrared presents a challenging atmosphere to model with existing grids. Best-fit values vary from 1200 to 1800 K for effective temperature and from 3.0 to 5.0 for log(g), depending on which individual wavelength band is fit and which model suite is applied. The extreme redness of the companion can be partially reconciled by invoking a high-altitude layer of submicron dust particles, similar to dereddening approaches applied to the peculiar red field L dwarf population. However, reconciling the HD 206893 B spectra with even those of the reddest low-gravity L dwarf spectra still requires the contribution of additional atmospheric dust, potentially due to the debris disk environment in which the companion resides. Orbit fitting from 4 yr of astrometric monitoring is consistent with a ∼30 yr period, an orbital inclination of 147°, and a semimajor axis of 10 au, well within the estimated disk inner radius of ∼50 au. As one of a very few substellar companions imaged interior to a circumstellar disk, the properties of this system offer important dynamical constraints on companion–disk interaction and provide a benchmark for substellar and planetary atmospheric study.

Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_b^0$→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the ${\Lambda}_b^0$ polarisation in pp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → J/ψ Λ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb – 1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ – decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration.

Search for lepton flavor-violating decay modes B 0 → K* 0 τ ± ℓ ∓ (ℓ = e, μ) with hadronic B-tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays B 0 → K *0 τ ± ℓ ∓ , where ℓ ∓ is either an electron or a muon. The results are based on 365 fb −1 and 711 fb −1 datasets collected with the Belle II and Belle detectors, respectively. We use an exclusive hadronic B-tagging technique, and search for a signal decay in the system recoiling against a fully reconstructed B meson. We find no evidence for B 0 → K* 0 τ ± ℓ ∓ decays and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of (2.9–6.4)×10 −5 at 90% confidence level.

Mapping ionospheric convection response to IMF B(sub y) negative and B(sub z) positive conditions

We have used the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE) procedure to derive electric potential patterns for a period of strong and slowly varying northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). Using these patterns we offer some insight into high-latitude convection response to differing IMF conditions between the hours of 0850 and 1720 UT on 14 January 1988. We introduce a newly assimilated data set, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) ion drift measurements, as a means of mapping electric fields in polar regions. Also, for the first time we map both southern and northern hemisphere convection flows. We show that significantly different convection patterns are simultaneously possible in the two polar caps when B(sub z) is positive and that asymmetries in these patterns are influenced by the strength of B(sub y) and B(sub x). When the ratio absolute value of B(sub y)/B(sub z) exceeds unity the polar cap convection increases and changes from sunward to anti-sunward for B(sub z) positive conditions.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into $b\bar{b}$ and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson (H) into a $b\bar{b}$ resonance plus missing transverse momentum is described. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 fb -1 of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The search targets events from $ZH$ production in an NMSSM scenario where H → $\tilde{χ}^0_2\tilde{χ}^0_1$, with $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ → a$\tilde{χ}^0_1$, where a is a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson and $\tilde{χ}^0_{1,2}$ are the two lightest neutralinos. The decay of the a boson into a pair of b-quarks results in a peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The final-state signature consists of two leptons, two or more jets, at least one of which is identified as originating from a b-quark, and missing transverse momentum. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations and upper limits are set on the product of cross section times branching ratio for a three-dimensional scan of the masses of the $\tilde{χ}^0_2\tilde{χ}^0_1$ and a boson.

Measurements of the branching fraction ratio $$ \mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\textrm{e}}^{+}{\textrm{e}}^{-}\right) $$ with charm meson decays

Abstract Measurements of the branching fraction ratio$$ \mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\phi \to {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\right) $$ B ϕ → μ + μ − / B ϕ → e + e − with$$ {D}_s^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\phi $$ D s + → π + ϕ andD + → π + ϕdecays, denoted$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}^s $$ R ϕπ s and$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}^d $$ R ϕπ d , are presented. The analysis is performed using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1 ofppcollision data collected with the LHCb experiment. The branching fractions are normalised with respect to theB + →K + J/ψ(→e + e − ) andB + →K + J/ψ(→μ + μ − ) decay modes. The combination of the results yields$$ {R}_{\phi \pi}=1.022\pm 0.012\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.048\left(\textrm{syst}\right). $$ R ϕπ = 1.022 ± 0.012 stat ± 0.048 syst . The result is compatible with previous measurements of theϕ→ℓ + ℓ − branching fractions and predictions based on the Standard Model.

Lessons from LHCb and Belle II measurements of B → J/ψπ and B → J/ψK decays

The LHCb collaboration has recently measured the CP asymmetry in B + → J/ψπ + decay, while the Belle II collaboration has recently measured the CP asymmetries in B 0 →J/ψπ 0 decay. Within the Standard Model, and using flavor-SU(3) relations including first-order breaking corrections, these measurements lead to new predictions with regard to CP violation in B + → J/ψK + and B s → J/ψ$\bar{K}$ 0 decays, the difference between S ψK S and sin 2β, and the rate and CP asymmetries in B s → J/ψπ 0 decay.

Solvation Environment and Interface Dynamics of Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 Electrolytes Uncovered by Theory and Operando Optical and FTIR Spectroelectrochemistry

In this work, we evaluated two closo-borate salts (Li 2 B 12 H 12 and Li 2 B 12 F 12 ) in propylene carbonate from theoretical and experimental perspectives to understand how the coordination environment influences their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. The coordination environments of the closo-borate salts were modeled via density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). Vibrational spectra calculated from the predicted coordination environments are in agreement with experimentally measured steady-state FTIR data. This theoretical investigation also suggested that Li 2 B 12 F 12 would possess a higher ionic conductivity than Li 2 B 12 H 12 , which was corroborated experimentally. Additionally, an electrochemical cell was designed and fabricated that enabled operando optical and FTIR spectroelectrochemical (OP-IR-SEC) measurements. This allowed for the simultaneous measurement of the relative changes of species at a lithium electrode-liquid electrolyte interface and the visualization of lithium plating at the electrode surface. This technique could provide new chemical insights and potentially link optical changes at the electrode–electrolyte interface to specific chemical species in similar electrochemical systems. The Li 2 B 12 F 12 electrolyte was found to have a higher thermal stability, which may find utility in applications for batteries that are subject to high-temperature conditions.

4'-Deoxypyridoxine disrupts vitamin B 6 homeostasis in Escherichia coli K12 through combined inhibition of cumulative B 6 uptake and PLP-dependent enzyme activity

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) is the active form of vitamin B 6 and a cofactor for many essential metabolic processes such as amino acid biosynthesis and one carbon metabolism. 4’-deoxypyridoxine (4dPN) is a long known B 6 antimetabolite but its mechanism of action was not totally clear. By exploring different conditions in which PLP metabolism is affected in the model organism Escherichia coli K12, we showed that 4dPN cannot be used as a source of vitamin B 6 as previously claimed and that it is toxic in several conditions where vitamin B 6 homeostasis is affected, such as in a B 6 auxotroph or in a mutant lacking the recently discovered PLP homeostasis gene, yggS . In addition, we found that 4dPN sensitivity is likely the result of multiple modes of toxicity, including inhibition of PLP-dependent enzyme activity by 4’-deoxypyridoxine phosphate (4dPNP) and inhibition of cumulative pyridoxine (PN) uptake. These toxicities are largely dependent on the phosphorylation of 4dPN by pyridoxal kinase (PdxK).
