Dusty Plasmas in Planetary Magnetospheres Award

This is my final report for the grant Dusty Plasmas in Planetary Magnetospheres. The funding from this grant supported our research on dusty plasmas to study: a) dust plasma interactions in general plasma environments, and b) dusty plasma processes in planetary magnetospheres (Earth, Jupiter and Saturn). We have developed a general purpose transport code in order to follow the spatial and temporal evolution of dust density distributions in magnetized plasma environments. The code allows the central body to be represented by a multipole expansion of its gravitational and magnetic fields. The density and the temperature of the possibly many-component plasma environment can be pre-defined as a function of coordinates and, if necessary, the time as well. The code simultaneously integrates the equations of motion with the equations describing the charging processes. The charging currents are dependent not only on the instantaneous plasma parameters but on the velocity, as well as on the previous charging history of the dust grains.

Assessment of Bacterial Spores in Solid Materials: Curriculum Improvements Partnership Award for the Integration of Research (CIPAIR)

This summer, we quantified the release, by cryogenic grinding at liquid nitrogen temperatures, of microbes present in 4 different spacecraft solids: epoxy 9309, epoxy 9394, epoxy 9396, and a silicone coating. Three different samples of each material were prepared: aseptically prepared solid material, powdered material inoculated with a known spore count of Bacillus atrophaeus, and solid material artificially embedded with a known spore count of Bacillus atrophaeus. Samples were cryogenically ground as needed, and the powders were directly cultured to determine the number of microbial survivors per gram of material. Recovery rates were found to be highly material-dependent, varying from 0.2 to 50% for inoculated material surfaces and 0.002 to 0.5% for embedded spores. A study of the spore survival rate versus total grinding time was also performed, with results indicating that longer grinding time decreases recovery rates of viable spores.

Electric Potential and Electric Field Imaging with Dynamic Applications: 2017 Research Award Innovation

The technology and methods for remote quantitative imaging of electrostatic potentials and electrostatic fields in and around objects and in free space is presented. Electric field imaging (EFI) technology may be applied to characterize intrinsic or existing electric potentials and electric fields, or an externally generated electrostatic field may be used for illuminating volumes to be inspected with EFI. The baseline sensor technology (e-Sensor) and its construction, optional electric field generation (quasi-static generator), and current e- Sensor enhancements (ephemeral e-Sensor) are discussed. Critical design elements of current linear and real-time two-dimensional (2D) measurement systems are highlighted, and the development of a three dimensional (3D) EFI system is presented. Demonstrations for structural, electronic, human, and memory applications are shown. Recent work demonstrates that phonons may be used to create and annihilate electric dipoles within structures. Phonon induced dipoles are ephemeral and their polarization, strength, and location may be quantitatively characterized by EFI providing a new subsurface Phonon-EFI imaging technology. Initial results from real-time imaging of combustion and ion flow, and their measurement complications, will be discussed. These new EFI capabilities are demonstrated to characterize electric charge distribution creating a new field of study embracing areas of interest including electrostatic discharge (ESD) mitigation, crime scene forensics, design and materials selection for advanced sensors, combustion science, on-orbit space potential, container inspection, remote characterization of electronic circuits and level of activation, dielectric morphology of structures, tether integrity, organic molecular memory, atmospheric science, and medical diagnostic and treatment efficacy applications such as cardiac polarization wave propagation and electromyography imaging.

TelemeTrak Final Technical Report – Award DE-SC0022722

We developed a browser-based simulation tool to evaluate whether buffering can be advantageous in various climate zones. This tool leverages the Amazon cloud services to process hundreds of simulations in a parametric sweep. This tool, still under development, will ultimately be usable by installers to determine exactly how much storage of what type to include.
