Internal photoemission in Ag-Al2O3-Al junctions

The magnitude of the photon-induced current in Ag-Al2O3-Al metal-oxide-metal junctions has been studied as a function of photon energy and angle of incident radiation. Photocurrents were theoretically analyzed on the basis of a modified vacuum photoemission model (Jain, 1975; Slayman et al., to be published). Optical constants previously reported in the literature (Irani et al., 1971; Ehnrereich et al., 1963) were used to calculate the true spatial generation rate in Ag and Al as a function of the angle, polarization of incident radiation, and film thickness. Results were found to be in very good agreement with experimentally determined values for a tunable dye laser with a KDP doubling crystal pumped by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with a LiIO3 doubling crystal. The system provided risetimes of 50 ns or less and peak powers of 10 W. Under short circuit conditions, the photoresponse to incident power was linear up to available power densities of 10 kW/sq cm. Quantum efficiencies of about 0.1% at zero-bias, near 3.8 eV under P polarization, were typically observed.

Effect of Si3N4 powder reactivity on the preparation of the Si2N2O-Al2O3 silicon aluminum oxynitride solid solution

Dense high-purity silicon aluminum oxynitride was prepared by reactive hot-pressing of an Si3N4-Al2O3-SiO2 mixture. The formation of a single-phase material was found to be critically dependent on the Si3N4 powder in the starting mixture. It is suggested that evolution of a chlorine- and nitrogen-containing species may enhance the reactivity of Si3N4 in this reaction. Densities of O prime sialons are very similar to that of Si2N2O, the widely quoted value in the ceramics literature of 3.1 g/cu cm for the density of Si2N2O being incorrect.

Thermal decomposition of a Si3N4-22 wt% Al2O3 alloy

It is pointed out that materials near the Si3N4 corner of the Si3N4-AlN-Al2O3-SiO2 quaternary, termed sialons are candidate materials for high performance applications. Hot pressed alloys in this system are useful because they possess high flexure strengths and good oxidation and creep resistance. The results of the thermal decomposition studies conducted indicate that dissociation and resulting weight loss lead to inhomogeneous specimens. Material loss comes primarily from near the surface (at least initially) thus causing differences between the composition of the surface material and the bulk. In these specimens, the O-prime phase was found to be the least stable to dissociation and the beta-prime phase the most stable. This result is in accord with the conclusions of Mitomo et al. (1979) that Si2N2O has a larger equilibrium SiO partial pressure than either the X phase or the beta-prime phase.

Specimen size and geometry effects on fracture toughness of Al2O3 measured with short rod and short bar chevron-notch specimens

Plane strain fracture toughness measurements were made on Al2O3 using short rod and short bar chevron notch specimens previously calibrated by the authors for their dimensionless stress intensity factor coefficients. The measured toughness varied systematically with variations in specimen size, proportions, and chevron notch angle apparently due to their influence on the amount of crack extension to maximum load (the measurement point). The toughness variations are explained in terms of a suspected rising R curve for the material tested, along with a discussion of an unavoidable imprecision in the calculation of K sub Ic for materials with rising R curves when tested with chevron notch specimens.

Oxygen diffusion in alpha-Al2O3

Oxygen self diffusion coefficients were determined in single crystal alpha-Al2O3 using the gas exchange technique. The samples were semi-infinite slabs cut from five different boules with varying background impurities. The diffusion direction was parallel to the c-axis. The tracer profiles were determined by two techniques, single spectrum proton activation and secondary ion mass spectrometry. The SIMS proved to be a more useful tool. The determined diffusion coefficients, which were insensitive to impurity levels and oxygen partial pressure, could be described by D = .00151 exp (-572kJ/RT) sq m/s. The insensitivities are discussed in terms of point defect clustering. Two independent models are consistent with the findings, the first considers the clusters as immobile point defect traps which buffer changes in the defect chemistry. The second considers clusters to be mobile and oxygen diffusion to be intrinsic behavior, the mechanism for oxygen transport involving neutral clusters of Schottky quintuplets.

Modelling Equilibrium and Fractional Crystallization in the System MgO-FeO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2

A mathematical modelling technique for use in petrogenesis calculations in the system MgO-FeO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 is reported. Semiempirical phase boundary and elemental distribution information was combined with mass balance to compute approximate equilibrium crystallization paths for arbitrary system compositions. The calculation is applicable to a range of system compositions and fractionation calculations are possible. The goal of the calculation is the computation of the composition and quantity of each phase present as a function of the degree of solidification. The degree of solidification is parameterized by the heat released by the solidifying phases. The mathematical requirement for the solution of this problem is: (1) An equation constraining the composition of the magma for each solid phase in equilibrium with the liquidus phase, and (2) an equation for each solid phase and each component giving the distribution of that element between that phase and the magma.

Microstructural development of protective Al2O3 scales

Microstructural characteristics of Al2O3 scales grown as protective coatings on NiCrAl alloys used in jet engines are described. The alloys were pure or doped with 0.3 percent Zr or Y and oxidized in 1 atm air at 1100 C for 0.1, 1 or 20.0 hr. The scales were then examined under a microscope. Transient epitaxial scales, formed during the 0.1 hr treatment and containing Ni, Cr and Al, consisted of a mosaic of subgrains and precipitates of different phases. The Y and Zr dopants had no effect on the nucleation site locations. The appearance of intergranular porosity at 0.1 hr was exacerbated after the 1 hr treatment. A bimodal void distribution appeared after 20 hr, when no porosity was evident. The detection of local areas of preferred orientation is taken as a spur to further studies of scale growth to gain control of the grain size or even to produce single crystal scales.

Spectroscopic measurements and laser performance of T:Al2O3 are discussed in detail. Data on absorption and fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime as a function of temperature are presented. Laser characteristics observed with pulsed-dye-laser, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG-laser, and argon-ion-laser pumping are covered and show that nearly quantum-limited conversion of pump radiation cna be achieved, along with tuning over the wavelength range 660-986 nm.

Adherent Al2O3 scales formed on undoped NiCrAl alloys

Changes in the spalling behavior of Al2O3 scales formed on an undoped NiCrAl alloy are described. Two samples of Ni-15Cr-13Al (wt pct), one a control and the other sanded, were subjected to 25 oxidation cycles. It is observed that adherent scales formed on the sanded sample; however, the control sample had speckled, spalled scales. The data reveal that the adherent scales are caused by repeated removal of surface layers after each oxidation cycle. It is determined that interfacial segregation of sulfur influences spallation and sulfur removal increases bonding. The effect of moisture on scale adhesions is investigated.

Picosecond excite-and-probe absorption measurement of the intra-2E(g)E(3/2)-state vibrational relaxation time in Ti(3+):Al2O3

The Ti(3+)-doped Al2O3 has been recently demonstrated to be a tunable solid-state laser system with Ti(3+) as the laser-active ion. In this paper, the kinetics of vibrational transitions in the 2E(g)E(3/2) electronic state of Ti(3+):Al2O3a (crucial for characterizing new host materials for the Ti ion) was investigated. A 527-nm 5-ps pulse was used to excite a band of higher vibrational levels of the 2E(g)E(3/2) state, and the subsequent growth of population in the zero vibrational level and lower vibrational levels was monitored by a 3.9-micron picosecond probe pulse. The time evolution curve in the excited 2E(g)E(3/2) state at room temperature was found to be characterized by a sharp rise followed by a long decay, the long lifetime decay reflecting the depopulation of the zero and the lower vibrational levels of the 2E(g)E(3/2) state via radiative transitions. An upper limit of 3.5 ps was estimated for intra-2E(g)E(3/2)-state vibrational relaxation time.

A self-injection locked, Q-switched, line-narrowed Ti:Al2O3 laser

Line-narrowing, Q-switched, and self-injection locking are studied independently and as a system. Line narrowing is shown both theoretically and experimentally to depend on the inverse square root of the pulse evolution time interval. Q switching of the Ti:Al2O3 laser is demonstrated and the laser output energy as a function of the Q-switch delay is investigated. Self-injection is demonstrated and the operation of the laser is explored as a function of loss and the Q-switch delay. Self-injection locking is demonstrated and the performance as a function of the Q-switch delay is determined.

Characterization of ZrO2 buffer layers for sequentially evaporated Y-Ba-CuO on Si and Al2O3 substrates

Thin film high temperature superconductors have the potential to change the microwave technology for space communications systems. For such applications it is desirable that the films be formed on substrates such as Al2O3 which have good microwave properties. The use of ZrO2 buffer layers between Y-Ba-Cu-O and the substrate has been investigated. These superconducting films have been formed by multilayer sequential electron beam evaporation of Cu, BaF2 and Y with subsequent annealing. The three layer sequence of Y/BaF2/Cu is repeated four times for a total of twelve layers. Such a multilayer film, approximately 1 micron thick, deposited directly on SrTiO3 and annealed at 900 C for 45 min produces a film with a superconducting onset of 93 K and critical temperature of 85 K. Auger electron spectroscopy in conjunction with argon ion sputtering was used to obtain the distribution of each element as a function of depth for an unannealed film, the annealed film on SrTiO3 and annealed films on ZrO2 buffer layers. The individual layers were apparent. After annealing, the bulk of the film on SrTiO3 is observed to be fairly uniform while films on the substrates with buffer layers are less uniform. The Y-Ba-Cu-O/ZrO2 interface is broad with a long Ba tail into the ZrO2, suggesting interaction between the film and the buffer layer. The underlying ZrO2/Si interface is sharper. The detailed Auger results are presented and compared with samples annealed at different temperatures and durations.

Crystallization kinetics of BaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses

Barium aluminosilicate glasses are being investigated as matrix materials in high-temperature ceramic composites for structural applications. Kinetics of crystallization of two refractory glass compositions in the barium aluminosilicate system were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From variable heating rate DTA, the crystallization activation energies for glass compositions (wt percent) 10BaO-38Al2O3-51SiO2-1MoO3 (glass A) and 39BaO-25Al2O3-35SiO2-1MoO3 (glass B) were determined to be 553 and 558 kJ/mol, respectively. On thermal treatment, the crystalline phases in glasses A and B were identified as mullite (3Al2O3-2SiO2) and hexacelsian (BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2), respectively. Hexacelsian is a high-temperature polymorph which is metastable below 1590 C. It undergoes structural transformation into the orthorhombic form at approximately 300 C accompanied by a large volume change which is undesirable for structural applications. A process needs to be developed where stable monoclinic celsian, rather than hexacelsian, precipitates out as the crystal phase in glass B.

Micromechanical stresses in SiC-reinforced Al2O3 composites

Applying an Eshelby (1957) approach, the internal micromechanical stresses within an SiC-inclusion-reinforced (platelet to whisker geometries) polycrystalline alumina matrix composite were calculated. The results are compared to the experimental residual stress measurements of a SiC-whisker-reinforced Al2O3 by Predecki, et al. (in press) and found to be in excellent agreement. The calculations are then extended to SiC-reinforced composites with polycrystalline mullite, silicon nitride, and cordierite matrices. It is concluded that the internal stresses are significantly influenced by the inclusion geometry as well as the thermoelastic differences between the inclusion and the matrix and also the volume fraction.

Crystallization behavior and properties of BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2 glass matrices

Glass of stoichiometric celsian composition, BaO-Al2O3-2SiO2, is a potential glass-ceramic matrix for high-temperature composites. The glass has a density of 3.39 g/cu cm, thermal expansion coefficient of 6.6 x 10(exp -6)/deg C glass transition temperature of 910 C, and dilatometric softening point of 925 C. On heat treatment, only hexacelsian crystallized out on the surface, but both celsian and hexacelsian were present in the bulk. Effects of cold isostatic pressing (CIP), sintering, and hot pressing, in the presence and absence of an additive, on the formation of the celsian phase in the glass were studied. CIP'ed samples, after appropriate heat treatments, always crystallized out as celsian whereas the presence of 5 to 10 weight percent of an additive was necessary for formation of celsian in sintered as well as hot pressed specimens. Green density increased with CIP'ing pressure but had no effect on sintered density. Hot pressing resulted in fully dense samples.
