Application Results on Early Exascale Hardware

This Exascale Computing Project (ECP) milestone report summarizes the status of 27 of the 31 ECP Applications Development (AD) subprojects at the end of FY21. In November and December of 2021, a comprehensive assessment of AD projects was conducted by the ECP leadership along with external subject matter experts (SMEs). (NNSA application projects are reviewed separately using the ASC milestone process.) The AD review committee—consisting of the AD lead, AD deputy, Level 3 (L3), and at least one external project SME—was tasked with evaluating each project’s progress relative to ECP project goals specified in the FY21 timeline. Key areas of focus were code maturity and performance on pre-exascale systems, an in-depth analysis of final key performance parameter (KPP) verification contracts, and future R&D priorities in the final year of ECP and beyond. As such, this report contains not only an accurate snapshot of each subproject’s current status but also represents a broad account of successes and challenges in porting large scientific applications to DOE’s next-generation high-performance computing architectures – the Frontier and Aurora systems.

Spiner vs EOSPAC6: capabilities, performance, and accuracy considerations

The Cross-Cutting Capabilities Project (XCAP) has significant interest in collecting and implementing a common set of libraries to be used across the various production hydro-codes at LANL. A common set of libraries will help facilitate comparisons between codes. In addition to minimizing variables for comparisons and physics validation, efforts toward optimization and porting of packages for future architectures will be more efficient. As part of this push Singularity is being considered as an inclusive materials interface library. One crucial part of this library is the importing, inverting, and interpolation of equation of state (EOS) data. Currently the Lagrangian Applications Project (LAP) and Safety Applications Project (SAP) are using EOSPAC6 for delivery EOS data. The Eulerian Applications Project (EAP) has historically used TEOS and more recently an implementation of Singularly via a package called Spiner for EOS interpolation. Singularity currently has the option of using several analytical EOS models, directly employing SESAME via Spiner, or directly using SESAME via EOSPAC6 (not optimized yet). Assuming Singularity moves forward as a common platform for the implementation of materials models, a decision will need to be made on which EOS interpolation package XCAP should move forward with, given resources and people are finite. We will attempt to address pros and cons of Spiner and EOSPAC6 and the trade-offs that should be considered during the decision making process. This report is intended as an ASC-PEM-EOS perspective on what is needed in an EOS interpolation package. Performance and Accuracy sections will mostly address data from comparison studies in LA-UR-22-22699.

An evaluation of risks associated with relying on Fortran for mission critical codes for the next 15 years

This document examines risks associated with relying on Fortran for codes critical to nuclear security into the late 2030s. The study was requested by the LANL ASC program office to support its decisions. To date, much of the discussion about the prospects for Fortran has tended to be informal and centered on questions (such as, “will the language be around in 20 years”) that are impossible to answer with any certainty. By focusing on estimates of the likelihood associated with different outcomes, rather than on specific predictions, we hope to clarify points of disagreement within the community and strengthen the analytic basis for reasoning about the future.

Advanced Research Directions on AI for Science, Energy, and Security: Report on Summer 2022 Workshops

Over the past decade, fundamental changes in artificial intelligence (AI)—from foundational to applied—have delivered dramatic insights across a wide breadth of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) mission space. AI is helping to augment and improve scientific and engineering workflows (e.g., for control, design, and dramatic performance gains through surrogate models) in national security, the Office of Science, and DOE’s applied energy programs. The progress and potential for AI in DOE science was captured in the 2020 “AI for Science” report from the DOE laboratory community in collaboration with academia and industry. Specific scientific areas ready to further leverage the power of AI ranged from the scale and performance of computational models to data analysis to creating new classes of observations using computer vision. Since that report, the scale and scope of scientific AI have accelerated, revealing new, emergent properties that yield insights that go beyond enabling opportunities to being potentially transformative in the way that scientific problems are posed and solved. Thus, under the guidance of both the Office of Science (SC) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the DOE national laboratories organized a series of workshops in 2022 to gather input on new and rapidly emerging opportunities and challenges of scientific AI. This 2023 report is a synthesis of those workshops. The scientific community believes AI can have a foundational impact on a broad range of DOE missions, including science, energy, and national security. Further, DOE has unique capabilities that enable the community to drive progress in scientific use of AI, building on long-standing DOE strengths and investments in computation, data, and communications infrastructure, spanning the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the Exascale Computing Project (ECP), and integrative programs such as the NNSA Office of Defense Programs Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) and the SC Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) programs.

FY23 Simulation of Elastic-Plastic Failure Propagation

This memo summarizes the simulation of ductile failure propagation work conducted under the ASC project “V&V of Ductile Failure” conducted during FY 23. Physically, the failure propagation consists of crack propagation in the material. In the numerical setting—specifically in a finite element model—propagation can be accomplished through element death when critical conditions occur locally at an element that is then deleted from the simulation. The validation of the finite element models is evaluated by direct comparison between the experimental and simulation results regarding the rate of crack growth and its influence on the load-deflection response of the specimens tested. This work considers two geometries that display stable crack propagation under displacement-controlled conditions. The first geometry consists of hat specimens loaded in compression with nominally identical geometries but made with three different materials: Steel A286, Al 7075-T651 and 304L stainless steel. The three materials represent a range of ductility values that affect the response and crack propagation within the specimen. The crack induced propagates under an essentially mode-II type of deformation. The second geometry consists of a pre-cracked 304L stainless steel compact tension test specimen loaded so as to induce a mode-I deformation at the crack.

Advanced Simulation and Computing: FY25 Implementation Plan

The DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) is an integrated technical program for maintaining the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The SSP incorporates nuclear test data, computational modeling and simulation, and experimental facilities to advance understanding of nuclear weapons. The suite of data analyzed comes from activities including previous nuclear tests, stockpile surveillance, experimental research, and development and engineering programs. This integrated national program requires the continued use of experimental facilities and the computational capabilities to support the SSP missions. These component parts, in addition to an appropriately scaled production capability, enable NNSA to support stockpile requirements. The ultimate goal of the SSP, and thus of the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program, is to ensure that the U.S. maintains a safe, secure, and effective strategic deterrent.
