The highly disordered Zintl phase Ca 10 GdCdSb 9 – New example of a p-type semiconductor with remarkable thermoelectric properties

Ca 10 GdCdSb 9 is a new Zintl phase with a large unit cell volume (~2500 Å 3 ) and a very complex, disordered structure, which can drive the realization of ultralow thermal conductivity in this material. The measured Seebeck coefficient, α, for single-crystalline Ca 10 GdCdSb 9 approaches 350 μV/K at 600 K. The experimentally determinedelectrical resistivity of Ca 10 GdCdSb 9 is very low, leading to a remarkably high-power factor PF of 23.2 μW/cm·K 2 at 460 K. Furthermore, the extraordinary PF value in this material, higher than those of the currently known state-of-the-art materials within the same temperature range, suggests that the Ca 10 RECdSb 9 material system (RE = rare earth metal) could serve as a viable playground to harnessing new efficient thermoelectric generators.

The {10$\overline{1}$2} non-cozone twin-twin interactions in Mg: A stability and mobility study using 3-D atomistic simulations

Due to easy activation of tensile twinning in Mg, multiple {10$\overline{1}$2} twin variants can interact with each other and form twin-twin boundaries over the course of plastic deformation. Previous studies using 2-D settings provide only a partial understanding of these interactions, especially the non-cozone ones. Here, atomistic simulations are used to study the 3-D structural characteristic and evolution of the non-cozone {10$\overline{1}$2} twin-twin junctions. The study reveals the existence of new twin-twin boundaries (TTBs) such as TTB BP and TTB K2 , formed after the interaction between the basal prismatic and conjugate twin interfaces with the coherent twin boundary. Here, for both non-cozone twin-twin interactions, the {10$\overline{1}$2} TTB and its associated twin-twin junctions are found to play a major role in the {10$\overline{1}$2} twin's stability and mobility. Specifically, they promote the growth of the 3-D twin in both the normal and forward directions during the interaction and hinder the detwinning process upon unloading.

Vaporization behavior of Ir 4 (CO) 12 and Re 2 (CO) 10 measured by torsion effusion gravimetric method

Metal carbonyls are of great importance in chemical vapor deposition (CVD), composite materials fabrication, and other near-net shape technologies. Carbonyl CVD is used for deposition of high-purity metallic and alloy coatings for which vapor pressure data is essential. In this study, we report vapor pressures of solid Ir 4 (CO) 12 and Re 2 (CO) 10 carbonyls measured by using the Knudsen Cell methodology using a torsion effusion thermogravimetric system. The vapor pressure of the Ir 4 (CO) 12 exhibited incongruent vaporization, as the molecular weight (MW) of the effusing species was determined as 128 g/mol as compared to the theoretical MW of 1105 g/mol. It is proposed that the Ir 4 (CO) 12 (s) partially decomposed (~66%) to Ir 4 (CO) 12 (g), Ir(s), and CO(g). The Re 2 (CO) 10 on the other hand, showed congruent behavior with Re 2 (CO) 10 (s) vaporizing to Re 2 (CO) 10 (g) in the measured temperature range. The raw data for vapor pressures was measured using two sets of Knudsen cells with different orifice sizes, and the equilibrium vapor pressures were calculated using Whitman-Motzfeldt methodology. The equilibrium vapor pressures of these carbonyls, partial pressures of gaseous species in case of decomposition, average molecular weights of the effusing gasses were determined. The vapor pressures and Gibbs energies of vaporization reactions of the two above mentioned carbonyls, as well as comparison of vaporization thermodynamics these two carbonyls with other carbonyls from Group VIB to VIIIB are presented in this work.

(NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sn 3 I 10 , a Vacancy-Ordered Three-Dimensional Tin(II) Perovskite-Derived Semiconductor

Ordering vacancies in hybrid Sn(II) halide semiconductors provides a strategy for preventing uncontrolled oxidation and formation of mobile holes. In this study, we report the structure and optical and electronic properties of (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sn 3 I 10 , a vacancy-ordered perovskite derivative with three-dimensional inorganic connectivity. The crystal structure resembles that of a Dion–Jacobson layered perovskite derivative, but with [SnI 5 ] square pyramids bridging the layers. UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals a sharp onset of light absorption at 1.86(1) eV with the photoluminescence emission maximum at 1.90(1) eV. However, the maximum excitation occurs from 3.42 to 3.81 eV (325 to 370 nm), revealing a significant Stokes shift of 1.3 eV. The electronic properties determined from dark and time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements reveal a minimum carrier mobility of 4.3 × 10 –2 cm 2 V –1 s –1 and a maximum carrier density of 5.96 × 10 16 cm –3 , a uniquely low value for a hybrid Sn(II) halide semiconductor. The transport behavior in combination with first-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and dielectric permittivity suggest polaron-mediated electronic transport, yet the photogenerated carriers have a fast and fluence-dependent nonradiative recombination rate, suggestive of localized “defect-like” states at the band edge. The observed photoluminescence is most consistent with single-ion-like behavior of an asymmetric Sn(II) environment. Together, these results suggest that defect ordering presents a strategy for the reduction of mobile charge carriers at equilibrium.

Structure of a 10-23 deoxyribozyme exhibiting a homodimer conformation

Deoxyribozymes (DNAzymes) are in vitro evolved DNA sequences capable of catalyzing chemical reactions. The RNA-cleaving 10-23 DNAzyme was the first DNAzyme to be evolved and possesses clinical and biotechnical applications as a biosensor and a knockdown agent. DNAzymes do not require the recruitment of other components to cleave RNA and can turnover, thus they have a distinct advantage over other knockdown methods (siRNA, CRISPR, morpholinos). Despite this, a lack of structural and mechanistic information has hindered the optimization and application of the 10-23 DNAzyme. Here, we report a 2.7 Å crystal structure of the RNA-cleaving 10-23 DNAzyme in a homodimer conformation. Although proper coordination of the DNAzyme to substrate is observed along with intriguing patterns of bound magnesium ions, the dimer conformation likely does not capture the true catalytic form of the 10-23 DNAzyme.

Deep potential generation scheme and simulation protocol for the Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 -type superionic conductors

We report solid-state electrolyte materials with superior lithium ionic conductivities are vital to the next-generation Li-ion batteries. Molecular dynamics could provide atomic scale information to understand the diffusion process of Li-ion in these superionic conductor materials. Here, we implement the deep potential generator to set up an efficient protocol to automatically generate interatomic potentials for Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 -type solid-state electrolyte materials (Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 , Li 10 SiP 2 S 12 , and Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 ). The reliability and accuracy of the fast interatomic potentials are validated. With the potentials, we extend the simulation of the diffusion process to a wide temperature range (300 K–1000 K) and systems with large size (~1000 atoms). Important technical aspects such as the statistical error and size effect are carefully investigated, and benchmark tests including the effect of density functional, thermal expansion, and configurational disorder are performed. The computed data that consider these factors agree well with the experimental results, and we find that the three structures show different behaviors with respect to configurational disorder. Our work paves the way for further research on computation screening of solid-state electrolyte materials.

High-repetition-rate, multi-MeV deuteron acceleration from converging heavy water microjets at laser intensities of 10 21 W/cm 2

Herein we demonstrate high repetition-rate deuteron acceleration by irradiating a continuously flowing, ambient temperature liquid heavy water jet with the high-intensity ALEPH laser. The laser delivered up to 5.5 J (120 TW, 1.2 × 10 21 W/cm 2 ) laser energy on target at 0.5 Hz. A high repetition-rate Thomson parabola spectrometer measured the deuteron beam energy spectra on each shot for 60 sequential shots (two minutes). Peak fluxes of 5 x 10 10 deuterons/sr/pulse, corresponding to an average flux of 1.5 x 10 12 deuterons/sr/min, were demonstrated with deuteron energies reaching up to 4.4 MeV. High shot-to-shot stability is observed up to 40%–50% of the maximum deuteron energy. These deuteron beams are suited for fast neutron production through deuteron breakup in a converter yielding energies similar to deuteron–deuteron (D–D, 2.45 MeV) fusion reactions of importance for material damage studies.

High-pressure high-temperature synthesis and characterization of B 10 C

The boron-rich boron carbide materials have been traditionally synthesized by adding boron powder to B 4 C material and subjecting it to hot pressing sintering for materials composition containing 8.8–20 at. % carbon in boron (composition range of B 10.4 C to B 4 C). Our study explores a synthesis route for B 10 C starting from high-purity boron and carbon and direct conversion under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions of 2000 °C and 6–8 GPa. Synthesis was verified via x-ray diffraction analysis, showing the conversion of the high-purity boron and carbon powder mixture into a hexagonal B 10 C structure (R-3m space group) with lattice parameters of a = b = 5.6115 Å and c = 12.197 Å. The concentration of boron was measured through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confirming the B 10 C ratio. The measured nanoindentation mean hardness of B 10 C was 40 GPa. Raman spectroscopy of the HPHT synthesized sample shows characteristic vibrational breathing modes of boron icosahedron and an additional intense band at a vibrational frequency of 380 cm –1 . This Raman band, which appears notably weaker in earlier studies and B 4 C samples, is assigned to the linear chain of B–B–B and attributed to the maximal incorporation of boron within the hexagonal structure.

The Universe at z > 10: predictions for JWST from the universemachine DR1

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at z > 10 that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the universemachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and light-cones over the redshift range z = 0-15. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy–halo relationships, and galaxy–galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at z < 10. We predict that Cycle 1 JWST surveys will very likely detect galaxies with M* > 10 7 M⊙ and/or M 1500 < -17 out to at least z ~ 13.5. Number density uncertainties at z > 12 expand dramatically, so efforts to detect z > 12 galaxies will provide the most valuable constraints on galaxy formation models. Additionally, the faint-end slopes of the stellar mass/luminosity functions at a given mass/luminosity threshold steepen as redshift increases. This is because observable galaxies are hosted by haloes in the exponentially falling regime of the halo mass function at high redshifts. Hence, these faint-end slopes are robustly predicted to become shallower below current observable limits (M* < 10 7 M⊙ or M 1500 > -17). For reionization models, extrapolating luminosity functions with a constant faint-end slope from M 1500 = -17 down to M 1500 = -12 gives the most reasonable upper limit for the total UV luminosity and cosmic star formation rate up to z ~ 12. We compare to three other empirical models and one semi-analytic model, showing that the range of predicted observables from our approach encompasses predictions from other techniques. Public catalogues and light-cones for common fields are available online.

Mapping the cosmic gamma-ray horizon: the 1CGH catalogue of Fermi -LAT detections above 10 GeV

ABSTRACT We present the First Cosmic Gamma-ray Horizon (1CGH) catalogue, featuring $\gamma$-ray detections above 10 GeV based on 16 yr of observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) satellite. After carefully selecting a sample of blazars and blazar candidates from catalogues in the literature, we performed a binned likelihood analysis and identified 2791 $\gamma$-ray emitters above 10 GeV, at >3$\sigma$ level, including 62 that are new $\gamma$-ray detections. For each source, we estimated the mean energy of the highest energy bin and analysed them in the context of the cosmic gamma-ray horizon. By adopting a reference model for the extragalactic background light (EBL), we identified a subsample of 525 sources where moderate to severe $\gamma$-ray absorption could be detected across the redshift range of 0–3. This work provides the most up-to-date compilation of detections above 10 GeV, along with their redshift information. We condense extensive results from the literature, including reports on observational campaigns dedicated to blazars and $\gamma$-ray sources, thereby delivering an unprecedented review of the redshift information for sources detected above 10 GeV. Additionally, we highlight key 1CGH sources where redshift information remains incomplete, offering guidance for future optical observation campaigns. The 1CGH catalogue aims to track the most significant sources for studying the $\gamma$-ray transparency of the Universe. Furthermore, it provides a targeted subsample where the EBL optical depth, $\tau _{(E,z)}$, can be robustly measured using Fermi-LAT data.

Radiological HEPA Filter 10-year Lifetime Evaluation in Research Facilities

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are widely employed by nuclear facilities to remove radiological particulate matter from their effluent exhaust streams. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the 10-year HEPA filter lifetime deployment and its other performance indicators. This 10-year-long endeavor to collect and analyze data regarding the service life of HEPA filters at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory began in 2010. A set of HEPA filters were selected and have been surveyed and analyzed at least annually to verify compliance with permit conditions. The study suggests the frequency of filter replacement should be based on the actual operational requirements, such as fume hood face velocity and/or efficiency test results, instead of on the prescribed filter “age limit” of 10 years from the date of manufacture (e.g., birth date) when operating under dry conditions. The study has now been completed, and over the past decade all the HEPA filters have been replaced, due to either technical issues as listed in this report or the previously recommended filter “age limit” of 10 years as prescribed by the oversight bodies. Experimentally determined failure rates are also determined from the data set and can be used to estimate the chances of HEPA filters surviving 15, 20, or even 30 years.

9 Li($\textit{d,p}$) reaction as a specific probe of 10 Li, the paradigm of parity-inverted nuclei around the $\textit{N}$ = 6 closed shell

In this work, we show, within the framework of renormalized nuclear field theory and of the induced reaction surrogate formalism, that the highly debated 10 Li structure, studied in a recent high statistics 9 Li ($\textit{d,p}$) 10 Li one-neutron transfer experiment, is consistent with, or better, requires, the presence of a virtual 1/2 + state of similar single-particle strength than that of the 1/2 – resonance at 0.45 ± 0.03 MeV. Based on continuum spectroscopy self-energy techniques, we find that the physical mechanism responsible for parity inversion in $^{10}_3$Li is the same as that at the basis of the similar phenomenon observed in $^{11}_4$Be and as that needed in 11 Li to have an important $\textit{s}$-wave ground-state component. In particular the strong dynamical coupling between the $s_{1/2}$ and the $d_{5/2}$ states, mediated by the quadrupole vibration of the core 9 Li. A phenomenon which also affects the strength distribution of the $d_{5/2}$ state, in particular, in the energy range of 3–4.5 MeV. Furthermore, this mechanism is also consistent with the (normal) sequence of the $1_{p_{1/2}}$ and $2_{s_{1/2}}$ levels in the $\textit{N}$ = 7 isotones $^{12}_5$B and $^{13}_6$C. The main aim of the present Rapid Communication is that of treating structure and reactions on equal footing and in a common language. In other words, the calculation of the 9 Li ($\textit{d,p}$) 10 Li reaction as a single conceptual step from individual single-particle motion and collective vibrations to absolute double differential cross sections of renormalized virtual and resonant final states, which can be directly compared with experiment.

Search for the high-spin members of the α : 2 n : α band in 10 Be

Clustering plays an important role in the structure of 10 Be. Exotic molecular-like configurations, such as α:2n:α, have been suggested at relatively low excitation energies. To search for the high-spin states that may belong to the molecular-like α:2n:α configuration in 10 Be. Measuring excitation functions for 6 He + α scattering, populating states in the excitation energy range from 4.5 MeV to 8 MeV in 10 Be using a 6 He rare-isotope beam and a thick helium gas target. No new excited states in 10 Be have been observed. Stringent limitation on the possible degree of a-clustering of the hypothetical yrast 6 + state has been obtained. Here, the high-spin members of the α:2n:α molecular-like rotational band configuration, that is considered to have a 0 + bandhead at 6.18 MeV, either do not exist or have small overlap with the 6 He(g.s.)+α channel.

Role of low-lying resonances for the 10 Be(p,α) 7 Li reaction rate and implications for the formation of the Solar System

Evidence for the presence of short-lived radioactive isotopes when the Solar System formed is preserved in meteorites, providing insights into the conditions at the birth of our Sun. A low-mass core-collapse supernova had been postulated as a candidate for the origin of 10Be, reinforcing the idea that a supernova triggered the formation of the Solar System. We present a detailed study of the production of 10Be by the ν process in supernovae, which is very sensitive to the reaction rate of the major destruction channel, 10 Be(p,α) 7 Li. With data from recent nuclear experiments that show the presence of a resonant state in 11B at ≈193 keV, we derive new values for the 1 0 Be(p,α) 7 Li reaction rate, which are significantly higher than previous estimates. We show that, with the new 10 Be(p,α) 7 Li reaction rate, a low-mass CCSN is unlikely to produce enough 10 Be to explain the observed 10 Be/ 9 Be ratio in meteorites, even for a wide range of neutrino spectra considered in our models.

Amorphous Indium Oxide Channel FEFETs With Write Voltage of 0.9 V and Endurance >10 12 for Refresh-Free Embedded Memory

This work presents, for the first time, a back-end-of-the-line (BEOL)-compatible W-doped indium oxide (IWO) ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FEFET) with a record-low operating voltage below 0.9 V and a write speed of 20 ns while achieving a transient read current window (CW) ratio ( I LVT /I HVT ) greater than 10 4 . The device also exhibits exceptional reliability characteristics such as: 1) measured bipolar write endurance up to 10 12 cycles; 2) a fast read speed of 50 ns; 3) read endurance surpassing 10 12 cycles; and 4) retention exceeding 10 4 s at 85 ∘ C. Furthermore, a physics-based numerical model has been developed to investigate the nanoscale characteristics of BEOL FEFET devices, leveraging nucleation-limited switching in HfO 2 ferroelectrics and dc characterization to extract material and channel parameters for accurate device simulation. The simulation uncovers the stochastic switching behavior of BEOL amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS) FEFETs and demonstrates an intrinsic switching time as low as 1 ps, highlighting the potential of BEOL AOS FEFETs for ultrafast memory applications. These results establish AOS FEFETs as a compelling candidate for high-density embedded memory applications for last-level cache (LLC) (L4) in advanced CMOS technology nodes.

LLNS Request for Permanent Variance from 10 CFR 851 for Construction

Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) requests variance from 10 CFR 851 (the Rule) for construction work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The request is based upon successful application of similar variances granted to LLNS in continued support of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) initiative to streamline the delivery of line-item construction projects under $50 million. This request is aligned with the approved NA 50 safety approach. Experience gained in the construction of the new LLNL Emergency Operations Center (EOC) under the variance granted in June 2020 and construction preparations to date on the Digital Infrastructure Capabilities Expansion (DICE) under the variance granted April 2022 is very encouraging. There are strong indicators that a benefit has been realized by both the subcontractors executing the work and the Laboratory. The variance has permitted local/regional construction businesses contracted to Management & Operation Contractor operated facilities and lower tier subcontractors to bid, operate, execute, and comply with safety and health standards they utilize in their business outside of the Department of Energy (DOE) Complex. While compliance to standards that are as safe and healthful as those in 10 CFR 851: confusion, additional cost, and inefficiencies associated with the burden of compliance to an unfamiliar regulatory spectrum has been avoided. Safety and health performance on the construction project including the number of inspection and surveillance issues is comparable to other subcontractors and projects at LLNL executed under 10 CFR 851. This variance application was prepared according to the requirements in 10 CFR 851, Subpart D – Variances, § 851.31 Variance Process. This request is limited to subcontractor executed construction at LLNL.

The Sizes of z ∼ 9−10 Galaxies Identified in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) Survey

Redshift z = 9–10 object selection is the effective limit of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging capability, even when confirmed with Spitzer. If only a few photometry data points are available, it becomes attractive to add criteria based on their morphology in these J- and H-band images. One could do so through visual inspection, a size criterion, or alternate morphometrics. We explore a vetted sample of Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) z ∼ 9 and z ∼ 10 candidate galaxies and the object rejected by Morishita+ to explore the utility of a size criterion in z = 9–10 candidate selection. A stringent, point-spread function (PSF)-corrected effective radius criterion ([[Formula]]) would result in the rejection of 65%–70% of the interlopers visually rejected by Morishita et al. It may also remove up to ∼20% of bona fide brightest (L≫L{sup ∗}) z = 9 or 10 candidates from a BoRG selected sample based on the Mason et al. luminosity functions, assuming the Holwerda et al. z∼9 size–luminosity relation. We argue that including a size constraint in lieu of a visual inspection may serve in wide-field searches for these objects in, e.g., Euclid or HST archival imaging with the understanding that some brightest (L≫L{sup ∗}) candidates may be missed. The sizes of the candidates found by Morishita et al. follow the expected size distribution of z ∼ 9 for bright galaxies, consistent with the log normal in Shibuya et al. and single objects. Two candidates show high star formation surface density (Σ{sub SFR}>25M{sub ⊙} kpc{sup −2}) and all merit further investigation and follow-up observations.
