Pressure-viscosity measurements for several lubricants to 5.5 x 10 to the 8th power Newtons per square meter (8 x 10 to the 4th psi) and 149 C (300 F)

A capillary viscometer was used to measure viscosity as a function of pressure, temperature, and shear stress for a number of lubricants. The conditions under which the measurements were made are specified. The results obtained for each material are analyzed. It was determined that all pressure-viscosity coefficients decreased with increasing temperature. Data from other techniques such as optical elastohydrodynamics, oscillating crystal, and low shear capillary viscometry were compared with the results obtained.

NASA Lewis 10 by 10 foot supersonic wind tunnel

Performance data are presented for this tunnel, which has a Mach number range from 2.0 to 3.5. The tunnel circuit, model support systems, auxiliary systems, instrumentation, control room equipment, and automatic recording and computing equipment are described. Information is presented on criteria for designing models, and on shop facilities available to users.

Space shuttle orbit maneuvering engine reusable thrust chamber. Task 10: Data dump comparison of 8- and 10- inch diameter thrust chambers

An analytical and design study was conducted to compare the high and low contraction ratio thrust chambers for regenratively cooled orbit maneuvering engines for the space shuttle was conducted. The design concepts were evaluated on the basis of weight, pressure drop, and performance. Only the basic thrust chamber assembly was considered. The assembly consists of the injector, the regeneratively cooled thrust chamber, and the radiation cooled nozzle. A two dimensional thermal analysis of the channel section is provided.

The latitudinal morphology of 10-eV to 10-keV electron fluxes during magnetically quiet and disturbed times in the 2100-0300 MLT sector

Electron and proton data from Isis 1 and 2 have been used to examine the change in the latitudinal morphology of auroral particle fluxes as a function of substorm time in the dipole magnetic local time period from 2100 to 0300. Clear and repeatable systematics in the latitudinal morphology were observed during the various phases of a substorm, allowing the substorm phase to be identified on the basis of particle data alone. Based on this study, a new phenomenological substorm model is presented which relates particle precipitation from various parts of the magnetotail to auroral oval morphology.

Experimental results on gamma-ray sources at E sub 0 = 10(13) - 10(14) eV

The detection of very high energy gamma ray sources has been reported in the last few years by means of extensive air shower observations. The Plateau Rosa array for the registration of the arrival directions of extensive air showers has been operating since 1980 and first results on Cygnus X-3 have been reported. Here, the status of observations of Cygnus X-3 and of the Crab Pulsar are reported.

All particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays in 10 to the 15th power - 10 to the 20th power eV region

Average estimations of the shower energy components are presented and their sum gives E sub 0 (Rho sub 600) - an average function of the relation of E sub 0 with the shower size parameter Rho sub 600 measured at the Yakutsk extensive air showers (EAS) array. Using this relation to the EAS spectrum obtained at the Akeno and Yakutsk arrays the energy spectrum of the cosmic ray total flux within 15 lg (E sub 0,eV) 20 by the EAS methods is recovered.

Detection of 10 (10) GeV Cosmic Neutrinos with a Space Station

The potential value of SOCRAS (Space Observatory of Cosmic Ray Air Showers) for studying the highest energy cosmic rays, including the neutrinos produced in collisions of cosmic ray protons with photons of the 3 deg background radiation is examined. This instrument would look down at the atmosphere from a space station orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 500 to 600 km. During the night portion of each orbit, air showers would be imaged in the fluorescent light they produce. Progress toward the eventual realization of this scheme is described, including a suggestion by Torii for improving the vertical resolution, measurements of the terrestrial background light by Halverson, and especially an application of the LPM effect, expected to increase the sensitivity for upward moving neutrinos by several orders of magnitude.

Monte Carlo simulations of electron lateral distributions in the core region of 10(13) - 10(16) eV air showers

This paper contains details of computer models of shower development which have been used to investigate the experimental data on shower cores observed in the Leeds 35 sq m and Sacramento Peak (New Mexico) 20 sq m arrays of current limited spark (discharge) chambers. The simulations include predictions for primaries ranging from protons to iron nuclei (with heavy nuclei treated using both superposition and fragmentation models).
