Decarbonizing Industrial Heat and Electricity Applications Using Advanced Nuclear Energy

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is investigating the technical pathways to assist industrial heat and electricity users to meet their decarbonization goals through integration with advanced nuclear power plants (NPPs). This project will deliver a library of process models and accompanying documents that guide specific industries in choosing potential nuclear technologies based on their needs. Considerations in providing this guidance include specific hazards from the industrial facility, heat transport requirements and associated technologies, and feasibility with site-specific demand profiles. The library of facility process models will be based on real data from industrial facilities in the United States. The industrial processes will be identified in this project based on the following: (1) operational heat characteristics that nuclear systems can provide, (2) sufficient energy requirements to merit the capital investment for nuclear plant construction, and (3) environmental benefits of replacing existing energy production with carbon-free nuclear power. Other decarbonization opportunities considered are the addition of nuclear-powered electrolysis processes or high-temperature electric heating where the thermal requirements exceed nuclear generation conditions. In addition to assessing the technical feasibility, INL is evaluating the impact of hazards introduced by the industrial facilities on the siting requirements of advanced NPPs. Site characterization of an industrial plant is essential to determine the feasibility and suitable integration methods for each industry. The assessment of siting and technical data will reveal opportunities for a single-use nuclear integration as well as integration of multiple industrial facilities with a single NPP.

pH-SWITCHABLE DYNAMIC BINARY COMPLEXES AS VISCOSITY MODIFYING AGENTS

The study of supramolecular structures has been gaining a lot of momentum in recent years due to their potential application in several interesting areas such as medicine, catalysis, energy, oil and gas, etc. Hydraulic fracturing is one area where the ongoing demand for novel viscosity modifiers has prompted researchers to explore various facets of chemistry. In this study, a dynamic binary complex (DBC) solution is presented, with the potential to be useful in the hydraulic fracturing domain. It has a supramolecular structure that is formed by the self-assembly of oleic acid and diethylenetriamine into an elongated network under alkaline conditions. With less than 2 wt% of constituents in aqueous solution, a viscous gel that exhibits high viscosities even under shear was formed. It was sensitive to pH and salinity, and its zero-shear viscosity could be tuned by a factor of ~280 by changing the pH. Furthermore, its viscous properties were pronounced in the presence of salt. Sand settling tests revealed its potential to hold up sand particles for extended periods of time, longer than 24 hours. In conclusion, this DBC solution system has potential to be utilized as a smart pH-switchable hydraulic fracturing fluid that can be prepared using seawater.

Workflow for Process Automation of Soil Gas Results from an Automated Soil Gas-Sampling System for Application in Carbon Storage Projects

Extended abstract for Geoconvention, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, May 12–14, 2025. The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) developed an automated workflow for processing soil gas measurements collected from the automated soil gas-sampling systems deployed across the project site. Raw soil gas measurements are collected from each station every 4 hours and automatically uploaded to a cloud database. The workflow begins by writing code to download the data to a workstation automatically, then the data are published to an online dashboard that visualizes the measurements in time-series plots and a process-based decision-making framework. This automated workflow accelerates the time from data acquisition to decision-making. It supports carbon storage project operators by preparing and delivering a live, standardized dataset for quick analysis and source attribution to provide assurance of containment and overall permit compliance.
