Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings (AEDG) Training: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-18-00761

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Building Technologies Office (BTO), Commercial Buildings Integration (CBI) Program supports the adoption of zero energy ready buildings design practices through targeted Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce development. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) identified the opportunity to provided targeted training to those professionals that have the greatest potential to impact adoption and successful design outcomes of zero energy ready buildings projects. In January 2018, ASHRAE released Achieving Zero Energy: Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings (AEDG). The AEDG was developed in collaboration with NREL, American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and Illuminating Engineers Society (IES). The purpose of this CRADA was to create a partnership between NREL, AIA, ASHRAE, USGBC, and IES to create and host on-demand, web-based training based on the AEDG.

Field Work Proposal ERKJ358: Black-box training for scientific machine learning models (Final Report)

The overarching goal of this project is to develop a scalable black-box training capability for scientific machine learning (SciML) problems that are non-trainable with existing automatic differentiation (AD)-based algorithms. AD assumes that a loss function can be decomposed into a sequence of elementary operations whose derivatives are known. This assumption is violated when the loss function includes a black-box physical model (e.g., a legacy simulator). The current strategy, converting a black-box simulator to an AD-enabled code via differential programming, is inflexible and time-, labor-consuming. Thus, black-box optimization is a main workhorse for training SciML models, e.g., in scientific reinforcement learning, hyper-parameter fine tuning, designing SciML models with adversarial robustness, etc.

This report provides the results of the annual post-closure use restriction (UR) inspections at corrective action sites (CASs) located on the Tonopah Test Range (TTR) and Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). This report covers post-closure UR inspections for calendar year 2020, and includes visual inspections and repair activities completed at the following corrective action units (CAUs): • CAU 407, Roller Coaster RadSafe Area (TTR) • CAU 424, Area 3 Landfill Complexes (TTR) • CAU 453, Area 9 UXO Landfill (TTR) • CAU 487, Thunderwell Site (TTR). Note: CAU 400, Bomblet Pit and Five Points Landfill (TTR) (CASs TA-19-001-05PT, Ordnance Disposal Pit; and TA-55-00-TAB2, Ordnance Disposal Pit) no longer requires inspection and reporting, as described in the Post-Closure Inspection Report for the Tonopah Test Range and Nevada Test and Training Range, Nevada for Calendar Year 2019. Site figures are included in Appendix A. The Post-Closure Inspection Plans and Record of Technical Change modifying the requirements for each UR are included in Appendix B. The Post-Closure Inspection Checklists are included in Appendix C. Field Notes are included in Appendix D. Appendix E, Inspection Photographs, does not include photographs because none were taken during the 2020 post-closure inspections. Appendix F, Post-Closure Vegetation Monitoring Report, does not include any data because vegetation monitoring was not conducted or required at any CAU in 2020. Visual inspections were conducted according to the post-closure requirements outlined in specific CAU and CAS URs, and approved by NDEP. The annual post-closure inspections for CASs associated with CAUs 407, 424, 453, and 487 were conducted on May 20, 2020. No maintenance or repair issues were noted at CAUs 487, or at CASs associated with CAU 424 (except CASs 03-08-002-A304 and 03-08-002-A308).
