Observation and modeling of energetic particles at synchronous orbit on July 29, 1977

In the 12 hours immediately after a worldwide storm sudden commencement at 0027 UT on July 29, there was a series of at least four magnetospheric substorms, the last and largest of which exhibited an expansion phase onset at approximately 1200 UT. Data from six spacecraft in three general local time groupings (0300, 0700, and 1300 LT) are examined, and vector magnetic field data and energetic electron and ion data from approximately 15 keV to more than 2MeV are employed. Four primary types of studies are carried out: (1) timing and morphology of energetic particle injections; (2) variation of particle phase space densities, using local magnetic field and particle flux data; (3) measurement of boundary motions, using high-energy ion gradient anisotropies; and (4) adiabatic modeling, which included injection, large-scale convection, corotation, and gradient drifts. For the 1200 UT substorms, it is concluded that there was a substantial flux dropout in a broad sector near local midnight because of a large-scale boundary motion, followed by a recovery to a predropout configuration.

PC 4 - PC 1 magnetic pulsations at synchronous orbit and their relation to pulsations on the ground

Three types of Pc 4 pulsations with periods in the range 40-200 s have been identified in the ATS 6 satellite data. Two types are not observed on the ground. Both of these are accompanied by Pc 1-2 activity that is seen simultaneously both at the satellite and on the ground. One of these two types occurs during substorms and coincides with the development of the IPDP subtype of Pc 1-2. The other is observed in the magnetosphere during slow, smooth changes of the background magnetic field during the recovery phase of storms. Puslation amplitude for these two types is from 5 to several tens of nanoTeslas. The third type of Pc 4 pulsation has significantly smaller amplitudes in the magnetosphere and can be observed on the ground with amplitudes usually greater than in the magnetosphere. The properties of the first two types of long-period pulsations suggest that the mechanism for their generation is the drift-dissipative instability of the ring current plasma.

Hydraulic forces on a centrifugal impeller undergoing synchronous whirl

High speed centrifugal rotating machinery with large vibrations caused by aerodynamic forces on impellers was examined. A method to calculate forces in a two dimensional orbiting impeller in an unbounded fluid with nonuniform entering flow was developed. A finite element model of the full impeller is employed to solve the inviscid flow equations. Five forces acting on the impeller are: Coriolis forces, centripetal forces, changes in linear momentum, changes in pressure due to rotation and pressure changes due to linear momentum. Both principal and cross coupled stiffness coefficients are calculated for the impeller.

Propagation mechanism of daytime Pc 3-4 pulsations observed at synchronous orbit and multiple ground-based stations

Observational data obtained during the last two decades show that the amplitude of daytime Pc 3-4 magnetic pulsations is controlled by the solar wind conditions. The high degree of correlation between the solar wind parameters and Pc 3-4 pulsations in the dayside magnetosphere suggests that the ultimate cause of the daytime Pc 3-4 pulsations must be the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere. The present paper is concerned with details regarding the control of the properties of the Pc 3-4 pulsations by the solar wind parameters, taking into account observations made at multiple ground-based stations. It is attempted to establish the relation between the daytime Pc 3-4 pulsations at the ground stations and the compressional Pc 3-4 waves in the magnetosphere. Attention is given to the most probable propagation mechanism of the daytime Pc 3-4 pulsations in the magnetosphere.

Observation of reconnection phenomena at synchronous orbit

SCATHA satellite observations of large-amplitude magnetic field oscillations in the magnetosheath and in the associated plasma are studied. Large-amplitude variations in the magnetosheath magnetic field intensity with a quasi-period of 10 s were observed. Nearly static structures of high-beta plasma associated with the magnetic field minima and low-beta plasma associated with the magnetic field maxima were observed convecting toward the earth. The morphology of charged particle data for the transition between the magnetosphere and the magnetosheath for a northward magnetosheath magnetic field is presented. A convection electric field of about 9 mV/m was inferred from the spectral difference between solar and antisolar drifting ions in the magnetosheath near a magnetopause rotational discontinuity. A trapped component was observed in the magnetosheath plasma during both northward and southward magnetosheath magnetic fields. It is concluded that flux transfer events arise from the interaction of the earthward convecting plasma filaments with the magnetospheric magnetic field at the magnetopause.

Dynamics and control of orbiting grid and the synchronously deployable beam

The dynamic analysis of a grid structure hung from the ceiling by two steel wires is described. The method of approach uses the discrete mass model system. The concept of the bifilar pendulum is used in writing the equation of motion. Assumptions are made with regard to the bar stiffnesses in the vertical and horizontal planes. The discrete mases are assumed to be connected by inextensible massless strings that do not provide any torsion or bending. The modal frequencies obtained by this method are compared with those obtained from the finite element model.

Results of using the global positioning system to maintain the time and frequency synchronization in the Deep Space Network

There are two hydrogen maser clocks located at each signal processing center (SPC) in the DSN. Close coordination of the time and frequency of the SPC clocks is needed to navigate spacecraft to the outer planets. A recent example was the Voyager spacecraft's encounter with Uranus in January 1986. The clocks were adjusted with the goal of minimizing time and frequency offsets between the SPCs at encounter. How time and frequency at each SPC is estimated using data acquired from the Global Positioning System Timing Receivers operating on the NBS-BIH (National Bureau of Standards-Bureau International de l'Heure) tracking schedule is described. These data are combined with other available timing receiver data to calculate the time offset estimates. The adjustment of the clocks is described. It was determined that long range hydrogen maser drift is quite predictable and adjustable within limits. This enables one to minimize time and frequency differences between the three SPCs for many months by matching the drift rates of the three standards. Data acquisition and processing techniques using a Kalman filter to make estimates of time and frequency offsets between the clocks at the SPCs and UTC(NBS) (Coordinated Universal Time realized at NBS) are described.

Observations of intense trapped electron fluxes at synchronous altitudes

The concept of flux limiting in the outer radiation belt proposed by Kennel and Petschek (1966) has been tested in a dynamic situation by using data acquired with instruments aboard the SCATHA satellite. A case-by-case analysis of 12 events for evidence of flux limiting under various magnetospheric conditions is made. The reuslts indicate qualitative agreement with the flux limiting theory for all the events studied. Even the quiescent events and hard-spectrum events are consistent with flux limiting. The limiting flux level at any instant appears to depend strongly on the recent history of the trapped electrons and plasma in the outer magnetosphere.

Mars global atmospheric oscillations - Annually synchronized, transient normal-mode oscillations and the triggering of global dust storms

Transient events of an unusual character have been discovered in the daily pressure variations of the Mars atmosphere's pressure at the planetary surface which last only a few Martian days, appear to repeat on an annual basis, cover a large part of the given day's hemisphere, occur in pairs separated by 20-days in some cases, and coincide with the annual pressure minimum. They also consist of spectral components nearly identical in frequency with diurnal and semidiurnal harmonics. It is presently suggested that these events are Kelvin, normal-mode, transient, global oscillations. An almost-diurnal and an almost-semidiurnal high-frequency global oscillation distinct from solar-driven tides may be common on Mars.
