Magnetic bearing and motor

A magnetic bearing for passively suspending a rotatable element subjected to axial and radial thrust forces is disclosed. The magnetic bearing employs a taut wire stretched along the longitudinal axis of the bearing between opposed end pieces and an intermediate magnetic section. The intermediate section is segmented to provide oppositely directed magnetic flux paths between the end pieces and may include either an axially polarized magnets interposed between the segments. The end pieces, separated from the intermediate section by air gaps, control distribution of magnetic flux between the intermediate section segments. Coaxial alignment of the end pieces with the intermediate section minimizes magnetic reluctance in the flux paths endowing the bearing with self-centering characteristics when subjected to radial loads. In an alternative embodiment, pairs of oppositely wound armature coils are concentrically interposed between segments of the intermediate section in concentric arcs adjacent to radially polarized magnets to equip a magnetic bearing as a torsion drive motor. The magnetic suspension bearing disclosed provides long term reliability without maintenance with application to long term space missions such as the VISSR/VAS scanning mirror instrument in the GOES program.

Anomalous bulk viscosity of two-phase fluids and implications for planetary interiors

The irreversible entropy production is calculated for the imposition of a pressure perturbation on a two-phase medium composed of a dilute suspension of droplets (or snowflakes) and a liquid phase of other materials. An absence of metastability is assumed, allowing the relaxation to be dominated by the solute finite diffusivity. The fluid medium was found to display a behavior suggestive of a bulk viscosity near 10 trillion P, a finding that is significant for studies of dissipation in planetary cores for tidal or seismic disturbances. A minimum quality factor for acoustic or tidal pressure oscillations and the accompanying frequency are calculated. An example is provided in terms of helium rain clouds in the deep interiors of giant planets. Additionally, a tidal quality factor of 10 to the 15th is found necessary to account for Io volcanism and resurfacing on Enceladus.

Injection molding ceramics to high green densities

The injection molding behavior of a concentrated suspension of Si powder in wax was studied. It was found that the injection molding behavior was a function of the processing techniques used to generate the powder. Dry ball-milled powders had the best molding behavior, while air classified and impact-milled powders demonstrated poorer injection moldability. The relative viscosity of these molding batches was studied as a function of powder properties: distribution shape, surface area, packing density, and particle morphology. The experimental behavior, in all cases, followed existing theories. The relative viscosity of an injection molding composition composed of dry ball-milled powders could be expressed using Farris' relation.

A system for load isolation and precision pointing

A system capable of satisfying the accuracy and stability requirements dictated by Shuttle-borne payloads utilizing large optics has been under joint NASA/Sperry development. This device, denoted the Annular Suspension and Pointing System, employs a unique combination of conventional gimbals and magnetic bearing actuators, thereby providing for the complete isolation of the payload from its external environment, as well as for extremely accurate and stable pointing (equal to about 0.01 arcsec). This effort has been pursued through the fabrication and laboratory evaluation of engineering model hardware. Results from these tests have been instrumental in generating high fidelity computer simulations of this load isolation and precision pointing system, and in permitting confident predictions of the system's on-orbit performance. The applicability of this system to the Solar Optical Telescope mission has been examined using the computer simulation. The worst case pointing error predicted for this payload while subjected to vernier reaction control system thruster firings and crew motions aboard the Shuttle was approximately 0.006 arcsec.

Role of a space station in materials processing

Previous work in materials processing (MP) in space is reviewed, and the role of a space station for future MP programs is examined. Historical MP experiments have been carried out in drop tubes, on aircraft in parabolic trajectories, on SPAR rocket flights, and on the Skylab and Soyuz-Apollo missions. The trials demonstrated gravity-driven convection is eliminated in molten materials, giving rise to expectations that crystals, alloys, and chemical or biological materials can be handled without convective disturbances that gravity causes. Particles of a significantly higher density can remain in suspension in an alloy in the molten state until resolidification. Containerless processing can be implemented at very high temperatures using acoustic, electrostatic, and EM levitation techniques. Convective influences on earth can be identified by their absence in space. The construction of a space station will permit longer-term and larger mass and volume experiments, as well as a closer step to actual commercial enterprises in space.

GSFC Flywheel Status

The assessment of flywheel energy storage for spacecraft power system is based on the conceptual flywheel design. This conceptual design of an integrated flywheel is based on the Mechanical Capacitor which evolved from development of magnetic bearings and permanent magnet ironless-brushless DC motors. The mechanical capacitor is based on three key technologies: (1) a composite rotor with a low ID to OD ratio for high energy density (weight and volume); (2) magnetic suspension close to the geometric center of the rotating mass to minimize loads normally encountered on the ends of a shaft, a no-wear mechanism in a vacuum environment, and to minimize losses at high rotational speeds; (3) permanent magnet ironless-brushless DC motor/generator for high efficiency of conversion and low losses at high rotational speeds. The complete system would include the necessary electronics for the motor/generator, containment, and counterrotating wheels for attitude control compatibility.

The drag of magnetically suspended wind-tunnel models with nose-cones of various shapes

This article concerns the experimental determination of optimum nose-cones (minimum drag) of a body of revolution at supersonic and hypersonic speeds by means of ONERA magnetic suspension. The study concerns two groups of models, specifically: a group whose nose-cone has a profile in the shape of X(n); the AGARD B group whose nose-cone is plotted in accordance with a given law. The results obtained for the first group are comparable to those calculated with the approximations of Cole and Newton and the experiments carried out by Kubota.

Modular design attitude control system

The problem of applying modular attitude control to a rigid body-flexible suspension model of a flexible spacecraft with some state variables inaccessible was addressed by developing a sequence of single axis models and generating a series of reduced state linear observers of minimum order to reconstruct those scalar state variables that were inaccessible. The specific single axis models treated consisted of two, three and four rigid bodies, respectively, interconnected by a flexible shaft passing through the mass centers of the bodies. Reduced state linear observers of all orders up to one less than the total number of scalar state variables were generated for each of the three single axis models cited.

Diurnal rhythm in the cell-division frequency of prochloron (prochlorophyta) in nature

Frequencies of cell division stages in suspensions of Prochloron cells, expressed at regular intervals throughout a natural day-night cycle from several colonies of four species of host didemnid, are given. The proportion of dividing cells of Prochloron living symbiotically in colonies of a didemnid, Diplosoma virens, rises from about 4% during the night (20.00-04.00 hrs.) to about 13% in the morning (0,.00-12.00 hrs.), and then falls again in the afternoon. Similiar, though less pronounced, changes were observed among Prochloron cells in two other symbiotic didemnids, Lissoclinum patella and L. voeltzkowi.

The role of water in slip casting

Slips and casting are considered in terms of physical and colloidal chemistry. Casting slips are polydisperse suspensions of lyophobic particles in water, whose degree of coagulation is controlled by interaction of flocculating and deflocculating agents. Slip casting rate and viscosity are functions of temperature. Slip rheology and response to deflocculating agents varies significantly as the kinds and amounts of colloid modifiers change. Water is considered as a raw material. Various concepts of water/clay interactions and structures are discussed. Casting is a de-watering operation in which water moves from slip to cast to mold in response to a potential energy termed moisture stress. Drying is an evaporative process from a free water surface.

A mathematical simulation model of the CH-47B helicopter, volume 2

A nonlinear simulation model of the CH-47B helicopter, was adapted for use in a simulation facility. The model represents the specific configuration of the variable stability CH-47B helicopter. Modeling of the helicopter uses a total force approach in six rigid body degrees of freedom. Rotor dynamics are simulated using the Wheatley-Bailey equations, steady state flapping dynamics and included in the model of the option for simulation of external suspension, slung load equations of motion. Validation of the model was accomplished by static and dynamic data from the original Boeing Vertol mathematical model and flight test data. The model is appropriate for use in real time piloted simulation and is implemented on the ARC Sigma IX computer where it may be operated with a digital cycle time of 0.03 sec.

Conceptual design of a noncontacting power transfer device for the ASPS Vernier system

The conceptual of electrical power transfer across a magnetically controlled gap as discussed for several years. The design represents the culmination of the first serious attempt to design a very low force, noncontracting power transfer mechanism. The electromagnetic device advanced herein is an ironless, translatable secondary transformer in which one of the two coils is fixed to the entire magnetic core. The second coil is free to move within the core over the full range of motions required. The specific application considered for this design was the Vernier subsystem of the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS). The development of and rationale for the electromagnetics design is presented. Similar documentation is provided for the Electronics Design. The Appendices detail the results of small scale model tests, disturbance force calculations, the baseline transformer fabrication drawings, the AVS Converter Parts List, and model schematic diagrams.

Inertial Energy Storage for Spacecraft

The feasibility of inertial energy storage in a spacecraft power system is evaluated on the basis of a conceptual integrated design that encompasses a composite rotor, magnetic suspension and a permanent magnet (PM) motor/generator for a 3-kW orbital average payload at a bus distribution voltage of 250 volts dc. The conceptual design, is referred to as a Mechanical Capacitor. The baseline power system configuration selected is a series system employing peak-power-tracking for a Low Earth-Orbiting application. Power processing, required in the motor/generator, provides potential alternative that can only be achieved in systems with electrochemical energy storage by the addition of power processing components. One such alternative configuration provides for peak-power-tracking of the solar array and still maintains a regulated bus, without the expense of additional power processing components. Precise speed control of the two counterrotating wheels is required to reduce interaction with the attitude control system (ACS) or alternatively, used to perform attitude control functions.

Linking numbers, spin, and statistics of solitons

The spin and statistics of solitons in the (2 + 1)- and (3 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear sigma models is considered. For the (2 + 1)-dimensional case, there is the possibility of fractional spin and exotic statistics; for 3 + 1 dimensions, the usual spin-statistics relation is demonstrated. The linking-number interpretation of the Hopf invariant and the use of suspension considerably simplify the analysis.

Hematopoiesis in antiorthostatic, hypokinesic rats

Rats exposed to antiorthostatic, hypokinesia showed the following effects which are comparable to those seen in man during or after space flight: weight loss, reduced food and water consumption, transient increases in peripheral hematocrit and RBC count, decreasing MCV and reduced reticulocyte count. In addition, the hemoglobin P50 was shifted to the right. A significant shortening of RBC t1/2 was only seen after suspension. Changes in leukocyte and platelet numbers in suspended rats were also comparable to those in man during space flight, but leukocyte PHA sensitivity in rats showed no consistent alteration. The results demonstrate that this model reproduces many of the hematological effects of space flight and has potential as a tool in understanding the hematopoietic response to zero gravity.
