Plastic set of smooth large radii of curvature thermal conductance specimens at light loads

Thermal contact conductance test data at high vacuum were obtained from two Armco iron specimens having smooth, large radii of curvature, convex, one-half wave length surfaces. The data are compared with calculations based on two macroscopic elastic deformation theories and an empirical expression. Major disagreement with the theories and fair agreement with the empirical expression resulted. Plastic deformation of all the contacting surfaces was verified from surface analyzer statistics. These results indicate that the theoretical assumption of macroscopic elastic deformation is inadequate for accurate prediction of heat transfer with light loads for Armco iron specimens similar to those used in this investigation.

Correlation techniques and measurements of wave-height statistics

Statistical measurements of wave height fluctuations have been made in a wind wave tank. The power spectral density function of temporal wave height fluctuations evidenced second-harmonic components and an f to the minus 5th power law decay beyond the second harmonic. The observations of second harmonic effects agreed very well with a theoretical prediction. From the wave statistics, surface drift currents were inferred and compared to experimental measurements with satisfactory agreement. Measurements were made of the two dimensional correlation coefficient at 15 deg increments in angle with respect to the wind vector. An estimate of the two-dimensional spatial power spectral density function was also made.

Polluted and turbid water masses in Osaka Bay and its vicinity revealed with ERTS-A imageries

ERTS-1 took very valuable MSS imageries of Osaka Bay and its vicinity on October 24, 1972. In the MSS-4 and MSS-5 imageries a complex grey pattern of water masses can be seen. Though some of grey colored patterns seen in black and white prints of the MSS-4 and MSS-5 imageries are easily identified from their shapes as cloud covers or polluted water masses characterized by their color tone in longer wavelengths in the visible region, any correct distribution pattern of polluted or turbid water masses can be hardly detected separately from thin cloud covers in a quick look analysis. In the present investigation, a simple photographic technique was applied using the fact that reflected sun light from cloud including smog and inclined water surfaces of wave have a certain component in the near infrared region, that MSS-7, whereas the light scattered from fine materials suspended in the sea water has nearly no component sensible in MSS-4 and MSS-5 channels.

Numerical solution for the inviscid supersonic flow in the corner formed by two intersecting wedges.

The inviscid, interference corner flow generated by two intersecting wedges immersed in a supersonic stream is obtained by use of a second-order, shock-capturing, finite-difference approach. The governing equations are solved iteratively in conical coordinates to yield the flow structure consisting of multiple shock and slip surfaces. The numerical results for shock wave and slip surface position and structure, pitot pressure traverses, and surface pressure distributions are compared with experimental data obtained over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The comparisons show the best agreement with the high Reynolds number (greater than 3,000,000) results for which the boundary layer is turbulent.

Study for identification of Beneficial Uses of Space (BUS). Volume 2: Technical report. Book 1: Sections 1 through 4

Consolidated information is presented for the study whose purpose was to identify products, processes, and services to be produced in future spacecraft environments for direct utilization on earth. Discussion of methodology for selecting from among potential space processing approaches, definition of requirements for experiments and tests needed to acquire sufficient knowledge for proof testing of selected processes, formulation of research and development schedules to achieve proof testing, and documentation of the decision processes involved in the programs are presented. Technology and programmatics are reported for the following select studies: (1) surface acoustic wave components; (2) transparent oxides; (3) high purity tungsten X-ray targets; and (4) high specificity isoenzymes.

Methods utilized in evaluating the profitability of commercial space processing

Profitability analysis is applied to commercial space processing on the basis of business concept definition and assessment and the relationship between ground and space functions. Throughput analysis is demonstrated by analysis of the space manufacturing of surface acoustic wave devices. The paper describes a financial analysis model for space processing and provides key profitability measures for space processed isoenzymes.

HCMM energy budget data as a model input for assessing regions of high potential groundwater pollution

The author has identified the following significant results. In early April 1978, heavy spring runoff from snowmelt caused significant flooding along a portion of the Big Sioux River Basin in southeastern South Dakota. The flooded area was visible from surrounding areas on a May 15 HCMM IR test image. On May 15, the flood waters had receded but an area of anomalous residual high soil moisture remained. The high soil moisture area was not visible on a HCMM day visible test image of the same scene, or on LANDSAT imagery. To evaluate the effect of water table depth on surface temperatures, thermal scanner data collected on September 5 and 6, 1978 at approximate HCMM overpass times at an altitude of 3650 m were analyzed. Apparent surface temperatures measured by the scanner included emittance contributions from soil surface and the land cover. Results indicated that the shallow water tables produced a damping of the amplitude of the diurnal surface temperature wave.

The relationship between ocean surface structure and the synthetic aperture radar imagery of ocean waves

The relationship between synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of ocean waves and the ocean surface structure is discussed. The effects of ocean surface motion on SAR images is given. A generalization of conventional SAR correlation techniques is developed to provide imagery with the minimum possible degradation and distortion. The modeling of such imagery is discussed and an analytically tractable example given. Ongoing work towards the determination of the relevant components of surface microstructure is described. The future use of SAR phase information to supplement information obtainable from SAR imagery is suggested.

Seasat performance evaluation - The first two steps

Seasat, the satellite dedicated to the study of the oceans using microwave sensors, collected a data set containing information on sea surface winds, sea surface temperatures, wave heights, wave directions, internal waves, currents, tides, the marine geoid, and atmospheric water content. The first two steps of the performance evaluation of the satellite have been completed: (1) the engineering assessment and (2) the sensor evaluation. The results are encouraging for the performance of the instruments and the first level of data processing algorithms.

The application of Seasat-1 radar altimetry to continental shelf circulation modeling

Seasat-1 radar altimetry data have been used to verify a continental shelf circulation model subjected to tidal forcing on the open boundary. The model makes use of the semi-implicit mode of time integration, removing the surface gravity wave time step restriction. Both the altimetry and the model predictions are compared with empirically determined tidal fluctuations and generally good agreement is obtained.

Using SAW Resonators in RF Oscillators

Surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) resonators used as frequency-determining elements in radio-frequency oscillators circuits. Oscillators are frequencymodulated, phase-modulated, or pulse-modulated. SAW resonators are especially applicable to low-power subminiature applications, such as biotelemetry and wind-tunnel instrumentation, where they advantageously replace crystals. Resonators are smaller than crystals and very thin--advantage where small package size is important.
