Leveraging High-throughput Computation and Machine Learning to Discover and Understand Low-Temperature Fast Oxygen Conductors (Final Technical Report)

The major goals of this work are twofold: (1) to enable transformative basic understanding of structure-property-performance relationships governing oxygen transport in oxygen-active materials and (2) facilitate the discovery and rational design of new oxygen-active materials which transport oxygen efficiently at low temperature. Transformative understanding and materials design will be accomplished by synergistically combining materials data mining, machine learning, high-throughput computation and targeted experiments.

Hybrid Quantum-Classical Neural Network for Calculating Ground State Energies of Molecules

We present a hybrid quantum-classical neural network that can be trained to perform electronic structure calculation and generate potential energy curves of simple molecules. The method is based on the combination of parameterized quantum circuits and measurements. With unsupervised training, the neural network can generate electronic potential energy curves based on training at certain bond lengths. To demonstrate the power of the proposed new method, we present the results of using the quantum-classical hybrid neural network to calculate ground state potential energy curves of simple molecules such as H 2 , LiH, and BeH 2 . The results are very accurate and the approach could potentially be used to generate complex molecular potential energy surfaces.

Epitaxial Growth of Ga2O3: A Review

Beta-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) is a cutting-edge ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor, featuring a bandgap energy of around 4.8 eV and a highly critical electric field strength of about 8 MV/cm. These properties make it highly suitable for next-generation power electronics and deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. Key advantages of β-Ga2O3 include the availability of large-size single-crystal bulk native substrates produced from melt and the precise control of n-type doping during both bulk growth and thin-film epitaxy. A comprehensive understanding of the fundamental growth processes, control parameters, and underlying mechanisms is essential to enable scalable manufacturing of high-performance epitaxial structures. This review highlights recent advancements in the epitaxial growth of β-Ga2O3 through various techniques, including Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE), Mist Chemical Vapor Deposition (Mist CVD), Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), and Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (LPCVD). This review concentrates on the progress of Ga2O3 growth in achieving high growth rates, low defect densities, excellent crystalline quality, and high carrier mobilities through different approaches. It aims to advance the development of device-grade epitaxial Ga2O3 thin films and serves as a crucial resource for researchers and engineers focused on UWBG semiconductors and the future of power electronics.

Simplified methods for interpreting the effect of transfer-function zeros on the transient response of aircraft

Two simple methods are outlined for evaluating the effect of transfer-function zeros on the system time response. The pole effects can also be evaluated. These methods are useful for simplified analysis or creating design criteria in terms of desirable regions of pole-zero locations. The type of transfer function studied is limited to those linear systems. Corresponding to ordinary longitudinal or lateral aircraft transfer functions, the denominator polynomial is of fourth order and the numerator of third order at most. With the longitudinal motion of the aircraft as an example, the methods are used in the evaluation of optimal regulator control with respect to a particular performance index structure.

Study of optimum methods of optical communication

Optimum methods of optical communication accounting for the effects of the turbulent atmosphere and quantum mechanics, both by the semi-classical method and the full-fledged quantum theoretical model are described. A concerted effort to apply the techniques of communication theory to the novel problems of optical communication by a careful study of realistic models and their statistical descriptions, the finding of appropriate optimum structures and the calculation of their performance and, insofar as possible, comparing them to conventional and other suboptimal systems are discussed. In this unified way the bounds on performance and the structure of optimum communication systems for transmission of information, imaging, tracking, and estimation can be determined for optical channels.

Techniques for aerothermal tests of large, flightweight thermal protection panels in a Mach 7 wind tunnel

Thermal performance and structural integrity are experimentally evaluated in the Langley 8-ft high temperature structures tunnel, which uses a combustion products test medium to provide realistic combinations of aerodynamic heating and loading. Recently developed techniques provide independent control of rate and magnitude of surface heating and differential pressure, protection against adverse acoustics buffeting during facility starting and stopping, programed radiant heating before exposing test panels to the high energy stream, and infrared radiometry for detailed surface temperatures. These techniques were verified repeatedly by return of useful data on metallic and nonmetallic panel concepts of reusable surface insulation.

Low voltage 30-cm ion thruster development

The basic goal was to advance the development status of the 30-cm electron bombardment ion thruster from a laboratory model to a flight-type engineering model (EM) thruster. This advancement included the more conventional aspects of mechanical design and testing for launch loads, weight reduction, fabrication process development, reliability and quality assurance, and interface definition, as well as a relatively significant improvement in thruster total efficiency. The achievement of this goal was demonstrated by the successful completion of a series of performance and structural integrity (vibration) tests. In the course of the program, essentially every part and feature of the original 30-cm Thruster was critically evaluated. These evaluations, led to new or improved designs for the ion optical system, discharge chamber, cathode isolator vaporizer assembly, main isolator vaporizer assembly, neutralizer assembly, packaging for thermal control, electrical terminations and structure.

Feasibility Study of a Satellite Solar Power Station

A feasibility study of a satellite solar power station (SSPS) was conducted to: (1) explore how an SSPS could be flown and controlled in orbit; (2) determine the techniques needed to avoid radio frequency interference (RFI); and (3) determine the key environmental, technological, and economic issues involved. Structural and dynamic analyses of the SSPS structure were performed, and deflections and internal member loads were determined. Desirable material characteristics were assessed and technology developments identified. Flight control performance of the SSPS baseline design was evaluated and parametric sizing studies were performed. The study of RFI avoidance techniques covered (1) optimization of the microwave transmission system; (2) device design and expected RFI; and (3) SSPS RFI effects. The identification of key issues involved (1) microwave generation, transmissions, and rectification and solar energy conversion; (2) environmental-ecological impact and biological effects; and (3) economic issues, i.e., costs and benefits associated with the SSPS. The feasibility of the SSPS based on the parameters of the study was established.

Optimum testing of multiple hypotheses in quantum detection theory

The problem of specifying the optimum quantum detector in multiple hypotheses testing is considered for application to optical communications. The quantum digital detection problem is formulated as a linear programming problem on an infinite-dimensional space. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived by the application of a general duality theorem specifying the optimum detector in terms of a set of linear operator equations and inequalities. Existence of the optimum quantum detector is also established. The optimality of commuting detection operators is discussed in some examples. The structure and performance of the optimal receiver are derived for the quantum detection of narrow-band coherent orthogonal and simplex signals. It is shown that modal photon counting is asymptotically optimum in the limit of a large signaling alphabet and that the capacity goes to infinity in the absence of a bandwidth limitation.

Hot environment effects on alloy mechanical properties

Prolonged high temperature performance of structural alloys requires joint attention to both corrosion and mechanical properties, and to their possible interactions. In this interpretive review paper, we provide a systematic compaction of theories and key observations on corrosion-mechanical properties interactions, from early single crystal work in the 1930s to recent studies on superalloys in nonoxidizing, oxidizing and hot corrosive environments. Particular attention is paid to environmental effects on creep, stress rupture and fatigue properties.
