Aerodynamic results of a separation effects test on a 0.010-scale model (52-OTS) of the integrated SSV in the AEDC/VKF 40-by-40 inch supersonic wind tunnel A (IA111), volume 2

Tabular data obtained during experimental wind tunnel aerodynamic investigations of a 0.010 scale model (52-OTS) of the integrated space shuttle vehicle was presented. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain data with the solid rocket booster (SRB) in proximity to the orbiter/external tank (O/ET), over a large O/ET initial angle of attack and sideslip range, as well as data on the SRB alone (greatly separated from the O/ET). A captive trajectory system, which supported the SRB, was used with the tunnel primary sector (supporting the O/ET) to obtain grid type separation effects data. One symmetrical SRB model was used interchangeably to obtain right-hand and left-hand SRB data. The entire investigation was conducted at free-stream Mach number of 4.5 at unit Reynolds number of 3.95 and 5.9 million per foot.

Hypermatrix scheme for finite element systems on CDC STAR-100 computer

A study is made of the adaptation of the hypermatrix (block matrix) scheme for solving large systems of finite element equations to the CDC STAR-100 computer. Discussion is focused on the organization of the hypermatrix computation using Cholesky decomposition and the mode of storage of the different submatrices to take advantage of the STAR pipeline (streaming) capability. Consideration is also given to the associated data handling problems and the means of balancing the I/Q and cpu times in the solution process. Numerical examples are presented showing anticipated gain in cpu speed over the CDC 6600 to be obtained by using the proposed algorithms on the STAR computer.

Acceleration of protons at 32 Jovian radii in the outer magnetosphere of jupiter

During the inbound pass of Pioneer 10, a rapid ten-fold increase of the 0.2 to MeV proton flux was observed at 32 Jovian radii (R sub J). The total event lasted for 30 minutes and was made up of a number of superimposed individual events. At the time, the spacecraft was in the outer magnetosphere about 7 R sub J below the magnetic equator. Before and after the event, the proton flux was characteristic of the low flux level normally encountered between crossings of the magnetic equator. Flux changes at different energies were coherent within 1 minute; a time comparable to the time resolution of the data. The angular distributions were highly anisotropic with protons streaming towards Jupiter. A field-aligned dumbbell distribution was observed initially, and a pancake distribution just before the flux decayed to its pre-event value. The alpha particle flux changed as rapidly as the proton flux but peaked at different times. The energetic electron flux behaved differently; it increased gradually throughout the period.

Full-scale wind-tunnel investigation of an Ayres S2R-800 Thrush Agricultural Airplane

This paper summarizes the significant results of recent full-scale wind tunnel tests at the NASA-Langley Research Center of the Ayres S2R-800 Thrush Agricultural Aircraft. The purpose of the tests was to provide fundamental aerodynamic, performance, and stability and control information of the airplane and dispersal equipment; and to study near-field wake interaction characteristics behind the aircraft. The aerodynamic tests included the use of a propeller thrust-torque balance to measure the efficiency of the propeller in the presence of the engine and to provide data for determining slipstream interference effects and slip-stream drag.

The SMART MIL-STD-1553 bus adapter hardware manual

The SMART Multiplexer Interface Adapter, (SMIA) a complete system interface for message structure of the MIL-STD-1553, is described. It provides buffering and storage for transmitted and received data and handles all the necessary handshaking to interface between parallel 8-bit data bus and a MIL-STD serial bit stream. The bus adapter is configured as either a bus controller of a remote terminal interface. It is coupled directly to the multiplex bus, or stub coupled through an additional isolation transformer located at the connection point. Fault isolation resistors provide short circuit protection.

One-dimensional unsteady modeling of supersonic inlet unstart/restart

A quasi-one-dimensional unsteady inviscid analysis of mixed-compression supersonic inlet flow is presented with emphasis on modeling of inlet unstart/restart phenomena. Numerical solution of the governing equations of motion is performed using a computationally efficient shock-capturing split-characteristics algorithm. Inlet unstart is modeled using a mass balance method which relates the expelled normal shock position ahead of the inlet cowl to the amount of spilled mass flow over the inlet housing. Comparison of computed results with experimental data for an axisymmetric inlet at a free-stream Mach number of 2.50 shows quite reasonable agreement over an entire unstart/restart transient which includes centerbody translation and retraction as well as bypass mass flow variations.

The ultraviolet spectrum of the eclipsing binary IM Aurigae

Low dispersion IUE spectra have been obtained at primary and secondary minima, together with a high dispersion spectrum near maximum, for the eclipsing Algol-type IM Aurigae system. The weak, sharp absorption features noted at two distinct velocities in the high dispersion data are attributed to circumbinary gaseous shells and/or gas streams between the stellar components. The implications of these results for the recently observed increase in O-C values of the primary minimum, which prompted this UV spectral search for evidence of a recent mass-loss event, are discussed.

Volcanology from space - Using Landsat thematic mapper data in the central Andes

The use of the Landsat thematic mapper to identify potentially active Andean volcanos and to study the history of individual volcanos is discussed. A thematic mapper image of the 6150-m-high Socompa volcano is presented and it is noted that TM data have played a valuable role in tracking debris streams in the avalanche derived from the different parts of the original volcanic edifice. The consequences of Landsat commercialization are considered.

Einstein observations of EF Eridani (2A 0311-227) - The textbook example of AM Herculis-type systems

Hard and soft X-ray spectra of the AM Herculis star EF Eridani obtained with the Einstein Observatory are found to be fitted by a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT of about 20 keV, and a blackbody spectrum with kT of between 16 and about 33 eV, respectively. EF Eri is shown to behave almost exactly as predicted by simple theory, with its soft X-ray luminosity not exceeding the hard X-ray luminosity by more than a factor of three, and both spectra originating from the same active pole of the accreting white dwarf. The data are consistent with a model involving an accretion stream penetrating deep into the magnetosphere of the white dwarf, such that accretion occurs along nonpolar field lines, and an 'X-ray auroral oval' emission is formed on the surface of the white dwarf.

Catalytic processes for space station waste conversion

Catalytic techniques for processing waste products onboard space vehicles were evaluated. The goal of the study was the conversion of waste to carbon, wash water, oxygen and nitrogen. However, the ultimate goal is conversion to plant nutrients and other materials useful in closure of an ecological life support system for extended planetary missions. The resulting process studied involves hydrolysis at 250 C and 600 psia to break down and compact cellulose material, distillation at 100 C to remove water, coking at 450 C and atmospheric pressure, and catalytic oxidation at 450 to 600 C and atmospheric pressure. Tests were conducted with a model waste to characterize the hydrolysis and coking processes. An oxidizer reactor was sized based on automotive catalytic conversion experience. Products obtained from the hydrolysis and coking steps included a solid residue, gases, water condensate streams, and a volatile coker oil. Based on the data obtained, sufficient component sizing was performed to make a preliminary comparison of the catalytic technique with oxidation for processing waste for a six-man spacecraft. Wet oxidation seems to be the preferred technique from the standpoint of both component simplicity and power consumption.

Simultaneous observations of H(+) and O(+) ions at two altitudes by the Akebono and Dynamics Explorer 1 satellites

Simultaneous observations of H(+) and O(+) ions from the suprathermal ion mass spectrometer on Akebono and the energetic ion composition spectrometer on Dynamics Explorer 1 are reported. These observations were performed simultaneously above and below regions of ion acceleration on auroral and polar cap magnetic field lines. The evening auroral zonal data directly confirm the existence of an ionospheric preenergization mechanism for oxygen ions. The preenergized oxygen ions have characteristic energies of the order of 10 eV and are transported to altitudes of several thousand kilometers where they acquire significant additional energy. The data indicate that the creation (energization) and transport of streams of upflowing ions in the polar cap is more complex than previously anticipated.

More About Pressure Probes For Turbulent Flows

Array of probes yields data on static and total pressures and cross-stream turbulence. Is combination of separate pressure-probe arrays described in "Measuring Streamwise Momentum and Cross-Stream Turbulence" (ARC-11934), and "Probe Rakes To Measure Static Pressure and Turbulence" (ARC-12973). Equations that express directional responses of various probes in array solved together to eliminate unknown quantities; makes it possible to process digitized time-averaged probe readings together to obtain time-averaged static, stagnation, and cross-stream-turbulence pressures.

Geostatistical evaluation of satellite radar altimetry for high-resolution mapping of Lambert Glacier, Antarctica

The potential of satellite radar altimetry for high-resolution mapping of Antarctic ice streams is evaluated, using retracked and slope-corrected data from the Lambert Glacier and Amery Ice Shelf area, East Antarctica, acquired by Geosat during the Exact Repeat Mission (ERM), 1986-89. The map area includes lower Lambert Glacier north of 72.18 deg S, the southern Amery Ice Shelf, and the grounded inland ice sheet on both sides. The Geosat ERM altimetry is found to provide substantially more complete coverage than the 1978 Seasat altimetry, due to improved tracking. Variogram methods are used to estimate the noise levels in the data as a function of position throughout the map area. The spatial structure in the data is quantified by constructing experimental variograms using altimetry from the area of the grounding zone of Lambert Glacier, which is the area chiefly of interest in this topographically complex region. Kriging is employed to invert the along-track height measurements onto a fine-scale 3 km grid. The unsmoothed along-track Geosat ERM altimetry yields spatially continuous maps showing the main topographic features of lower Lambert Glacier, upper Amery Ice Shelf and the adjacent inland ice sheet. The probable position of the grounding line of Lambert Glacier is identified from a break in slope at the grounded ice/floating ice transition. The approximate standard error of the kriged map is inferred from the data noise levels.

Inlet Development for a Rocket Based Combined Cycle, Single Stage to Orbit Vehicle Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Design and analysis of the inlet for a rocket based combined cycle engine is discussed. Computational fluid dynamics was used in both the design and subsequent analysis. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations were performed using both perfect gas and real gas assumptions. An inlet design that operates over the required Mach number range from 0 to 12 was produced. Performance data for cycle analysis was post processed using a stream thrust averaging technique. A detailed performance database for cycle analysis is presented. The effect ot vehicle forebody compression on air capture is also examined.
