Facilitated Transport Membranes with Tunable Amine-CO 2 Chemistry for CO 2 /H 2 Separation

CO 2 -selective, amine-containing facilitated transport membranes are of great interest for syngas purification since high-pressure H 2 can be retained upon CO 2 removal. A variety of amine-containing polymers have shown decent chemical and thermal stability at aggressive conditions, but their CO 2 /H 2 separation properties are largely limited by the hydrostatic compaction and severe carrier saturation associated with the high syngas pressure. Herein, we report a new approach to enhance the CO 2 permeability by manipulating the steric hindrance of the amine carriers. A series of α-aminoacids with different alkyl or hydroxyethyl substituents are deprotonated by 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethylamine, leading to nonvolatile amine carriers with different degrees of steric hindrance. For hosting the low MW amine carriers, a highly crosslinked poly(vinyl acetal) is synthesized as a water-swellable polymer network. In order to avoid membrane compaction, perforated graphene oxide mono-sheets are dispersed as reinforcement fillers. In the presence of moisture, a bulkier alkyl substituent to the amino site (increasing steric hindrance) destabilizes the carbamate adduct and thus drastically increases the chemisorption of CO 2 , while the incorporation of ethylene oxide groups provides additional physisorption of CO 2 . The enhanced CO 2 solubility significantly mitigates the carrier saturation behavior, and an unprecedented CO 2 /H 2 selectivity greater than 100 is demonstrated at 107 °C and 12.5 atm of CO 2 partial pressure. As the CO 2 partial pressure reduces to 0.4 atm, a less hindered amine yields a higher reactive diffusivity of CO 2 , resulting in a CO 2 permeance of 435 GPU with a selectivity greater than 500. These reaction-mediated polymeric membranes are well above the theoretical upper bound, and they are of great interest for designing a highly-selective membrane process for syngas purification.

Amorphous fluorinated copolymer gas separation membranes

Membranes having a permselective active layer of a copolymerized perfluorinated monomer and an non-fluorinated alkylvinylester monomer demonstrate superior selective permeability performance for separating gas mixtures compared to membranes of exclusively perfluorinated polymers. Preferred active layer compositions are copolymers of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3 dioxole (PDD) copolymerized with an alkylvinyl ester such as vinyl acetate, and vinyl pivalate, and with alkylvinyl esters that are substantially hydrolyzed to provide copolymerized vinyl alcohol functionality. The membranes can have a thin, high diffusion rate, “gutter layer” of a fluorinated polymer highly permeable to nitrogen positioned between the active layer and a porous support layer. A novel copolymer effective in selectively permeable membranes is a copolymer of PDD and an alkylvinyl ester compound having the formula H2C═CHOC(O)R1 in which R1 is a linear or branched alkyl group of from 2 to 5 carbon atoms.

Hierarchical Membrane Dynamics in Phase-Separated Model Membranes

Lipid membranes, the primary matrix of cell membranes, exhibit a hierarchy of dynamics from molecular motions to collective undulations, which control spatiotemporal membrane phenomena and regulate various cellular functions. Thus, understanding how various dynamic modes influence membrane behavior is crucial to uncovering the design rules of cell membranes and implementing them in future technologies. Previous membrane dynamics studies using neutron spin-echo spectroscopy (NSE) have shed light on the dependence of collective membrane fluctuations on viscoelastic membrane properties, demonstrating that thickness fluctuation modes (100ns) are dictated by membrane viscosity, which directly governs fast (ps) molecular diffusive motions. Here, we focus on phase-separating lipid membranes, composed of DMPC:DSPC mixtures, to understand the effect of domain formation/growth on hierarchical matrix dynamics using selective lipid deuteration and different neutron spectroscopy techniques. NSE measurements on DMPC:DSPC-d83 (70:30 mol%) show that bending rigidity of the DMPC-rich matrix graduallyincreases with decreasing temperature - as the fully-fluid membrane approaches the upper phase transition (i.e. with the formation of transient DSPC clusters) - and increases further in the phase coexistence region with the growth of DSPC domains. Comparatively, NSE measurements on DMPC-d54:DSPC-d83 vesicles show pronounced matrix thickness fluctuations in the fully-fluid phase and drastic suppression of this fluctuation mode in the gel-fluid coexistence phase, even when the DMPC-rich matrix is still in its fluid phase. This suppression in fluctuations suggests an increase in the matrix viscosity with the growth of gel DSPC domains, which is further investigated by selectively measuring lipid diffusion in the DMPC-rich matrix using neutron backscattering spectroscopy. Comparisons of the experimental results with coarse-grained MD simulationsillustrate the underlying coupling mechanisms. Overall, these observations indicate a clear mechanical and viscoelastic coupling betweenlipid domains and their host matrix, suggesting that domain formation influences membrane properties beyond local effects.

Learning method and system for separating independent and dependent attacks

Streams of monitoring node signal values over time, representing a current operation of the industrial asset, are used to generate current monitoring node feature vectors. Each feature vector is compared with a corresponding decision boundary separating normal from abnormal states. When a first monitoring node passes a corresponding decision boundary, an attack is detected and classified as an independent attack. When a second monitoring node passes a decision boundary, an attack is detected and a first decision is generated based on a first set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent. From the beginning of the attack on the second monitoring node until a final time, the first decision is updated as new signal values are received for the second monitoring node. When the final time is reached, a second decision is generated based on a second set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent.

Impact of Wide-Area Oscillation Damping Control using Measurement-Driven Approach on System Separation - Saudi Grid Case Study

In any interconnected power grid, low-frequency oscillations is a major problem that can limit the power transfer capability and deteriorate power system security due to potential low-damped or even undamped oscillations. Synchronized measurements provided by PMUs enable the design and development of wide-area oscillation damping controllers (WADC) based on measurement-driven model to overcome the limitations of traditional controllers. This work focuses on the impact of a W ADC based on a measurement-driven approach on system separation for the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) grid. A grid model is provided by SEC for this study. Modal analysis is performed to identify the oscillation mode of interest for which the controller is designed. Damping the dominant oscillation mode helps slightly to improve transient stability of the system. Considering bus frequency at different locations in SEC's system as the candidate observation signals, the optimal observation signal is chosen for the W ADC by using the FFT method. The system transfer function model is constructed by utilizing probing measurements. Then, the W ADC parameters are calculated based on the identified model. The performance of the designed W ADC is tested under different contingencies.

Membranes, methods of making the membranes, and methods of using the membranes are described herein. The membranes can comprise a gas permeable support layer, optionally an inorganic layer disposed on the support, and a selective polymer layer disposed on the inorganic layer. In some cases, the selective polymer layer can comprise an amine-containing polymer and an amino acid salt dispersed within the amine-containing polymer. In other cases, the selective polymer layer comprises a sterically hindered amine-containing polymer, such as a sterically hindered derivative of polyvinylamine. The membranes can be used, for example, to separate gaseous mixtures, such as flue gas.

Separations Consortium: Counter Current Chromatography

In support of the Bioenergy Technologies Office in recovering coproducts in biorefineries this project evaluates the use of Counter Current Chromatography (CCC) in recovering co-products from Reductive Catalytic Fractionation (RCF) oil, Alkaline Pretreatment Liquor (APL), aqueous phase Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) oil, and Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis (CFP) oil. The project addresses three technology barriers in developing the bioeconomy; (1) Cost of production (2) Selective separation of organic acid species, and (3) Advanced bioprocess development. CCC is a unique, scalable, chromatographic technology that operates with two immiscible liquid phases moving counter current to one another. Unlike Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) technology, CCC is a true moving bed and because it uses liquids as both the stationary and mobile phase it can handle solids directly in the feed. This aspect of CCC allows it to skip the expensive filtration step needed prior to traditional SMB, furthermore the liquid phases are composed on relatively inexpensive organics (e.g. hexane and ethyl acetate). This project develops CCC methods for direct isolation of co-products from RCF oil, APL, HTL aqueous, and CFP oil. TechnoEconomic Analysis and process modeling is presented to compare CCC to SMB and assess its applicability in a holistic biorefinery. Initial results indicate approximately 4x reductions in solvent demand and 2x reduction in energy consumption compared to SMB.
