Sister Rod Destructive Examinations (FY2021) Appendix B: Segmentation, Defueling, Metallographic Data and Total Cladding Hydrogen

As a part of the DOE-NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWd/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called sister rods or sibling rods are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin (LT) Zirc-4, ZIRLO®, and M5®. Appendix B provides detailed information regarding defueling activities, metallographic imaging and measurements, and total cladding hydrogen measurements.

Development and Standup Testing of a System to Observe Fission Gas Release During Transient Heating of Nuclear Fuel Element Segments

As part of an effort to increase the burnup of nuclear fuels used in Light Water Reactors, the mechanisms and timing of fission gas release during high temperature transients must be studied. In this work, a system was built to observe fission gas release of fuel element sections under evacuated conditions, at temperatures up to 800 °C. System capabilities and limitations are overviewed in this report. The system was further tested with a hydrogen-infused titanium foils and gas release was observed in agreement with literature observations. Pressure was monitored with two sensors, and temperature was monitored using a thermocouple and a pyrometer with continuous visual imaging.

Deep Learning Model Segmentations on Computed Tomography 3D Reconstructions of Coffee Beans to Determine Void Ratio (U-Net) and Roast Level (LinkNet)

This project will evaluate the functionality of Object Research Dragonfly software’s user produced deep learning (DL) models on Computed Tomography (CT) scanned coffee beans from green (unroasted) through a dark roast. DL models will be expected to identify voids within the coffee beans, and identify the level of roast of the bean from the CT reconstruction. The scope of this project is intended to meet the Capstone Project requirements of University of California San Diego (UCSD) Structural Engineering master’s degree and offer useful insight on Dragonfly’s DL capability for LANL’s Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) CT team. The results of this project will be presented to the E-6 NDE group within LANL. Data acquisition was completed with a North Star Imaging (NSI) X-25 CT Cabinet.

Sister Rod Destructive Examinations (FY22) Appendix B: Segmentation, Defueling, Metallographic Data and Total Cladding Hydrogen

This report documents work performed under the Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition’s Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology program for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE). This work was performed to fulfill Level 2 Milestone M2SF-23OR010201024, “FY22 Report on ORNL Sibling Rod Testing Results,” within work package SF-23OR01020102 and is an update to the work reported in M2SF-22OR010201047, M2SF-21OR010201032, M2SF-19ORO010201026, and M2SF 19OR010201028. As a part of the DOE-NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWd/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called sister rods or sibling rods are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin (LT) Zirc-4, ZIRLO ® , and M5 ® . Appendix B provides detailed information regarding defueling activities, metallographic imaging and measurements, and total cladding hydrogen measurements.
