Theorems in Service of Sound Composition, Rapid Modeling and Scalable Analysis

This project extends the state of the art in formal verification modeling with modules and automatically checkable data-sharing patterns such that component modules can retain their assurance case when composed within a larger system. For users, smaller models make reasoning easier and help to ensure they accurately reflect text specifications. For automated methods, smaller models give exponential benefits for verification algorithm execution time.

Understanding and Developing Dual-Wavelength Olefin Metathesis Polymerizations for the Rapid, Continuous Additive Manufacturing of High-Performance Thermosets

This report details the goals, approach, results, and future needs of a three-year Laboratory Directed Research and Development project funded by Sandia’s Materials Science Research Foundation. In this project, we established basic principles and mechanistic understanding of orthogonal or sequential chemistries for fabricating multi-material or robust materials. We developed numerous additive manufacturing, or 3D-printing, techniques including volumetric solid-state printing, dual-wavelength printing, and lithographic regulation of polymer crystallinity. We leveraged these new printing motifs to expand upon what is possible with manufacturing to give bespoke optical and mechanical performance. Moreover, we discovered new techniques for depolymerization enabling recovery of pristine carbon-fiber and high value electronics under moderate conditions.

Detection of trace contaminants released from rapidly heated pulsed power electrodes by laser diagnostics

Development of a capability to measure trace gas contaminants released from pulsed power electrodes would immediately impact Sandia pulsed power research. These releases occur during ultra-fast heating of metal electrodes during pulsed power discharges and can lead to substantial power losses through plasma formation. Detection of contaminants is a formidable challenge due to the need for in-situ spatially and temporally resolved measurements of trace gases in the extreme environment of ultra-fast heated metal surfaces. We investigate the feasibility of laser diagnostics for detecting contaminants, including H-atom, OH, and H 2 O. Laser-induced fluorescence and photofragmentation fluorescence showed significant plasma emission interferences and did not yield any detectable H-atom, OH, or H 2 O. Our newly developed H-atom detection using femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing suppressed interferences and enabled detection of H-atoms. A few shots showed large signals in the near-surface region of metal foils, suggesting the formation of a wave of H-atoms from the metal.

Feedback-based calibration for rapid tuning and drift control of quantum processors

This presentation will cover an abstract that has been submitted to the conference, but will not include a paper publication. The presentation details an experimental method for calibrating quantum bits and quantum circuits. All of the data on the slides has been gathered via PyGSTi, an open-source Python-based software developed by Sandia's Quantum Performance Laboratory.

Rapid CFD Using Machine Learning Algorithms (CRADA Final Report)

This is a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (“LLNL”) and Guardian Glass, LLC ("Guardian Glass") to develop a fast-running emulator of the reactive Computational Fluid Dynamics (“CFD”) simulations needed to understand the complex reactions and flows in the glass melting, fining, and forming subprocesses. This CRADA project is sponsored under the High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (“HPC4Mfg”) Program of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (“AMO”) within the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (“EERE”) Office.

Rapid Gamma Simulations of TRISO Fuel Elements

As energy demand rises, nuclear energy, particularly from reactors that use tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuels, has gained attention due to the fuel’s enhanced resistance to radiation damage and high temperatures. This report investigates the modeling capabilities of the Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software (GADRAS) for TRISO fuels, focusing on the gamma signatures of TRISO particles, which have not been extensively explored. Using the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code as a benchmark, we developed both homogeneous and heterogeneous models of TRISO pebbles to analyze gamma spectra. Our findings reveal that the homogeneous and heterogeneous models produced different gamma signatures. Additionally, the GADRAS heterogeneous model significantly reduces computation times compared to MCNP, enabling effective modeling of gamma signatures for safeguards applications. This advancement is essential for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in detecting anomalies and potential smuggling attempts in TRISO reactor fuel elements.
