Open-loop response of a burning liquid monopropellant

A direct comparison was obtained between the theoretical and experimental response of a burning liquid monopropellant surface to imposed pressure oscillations. The comparison extended beyond the quasi-steady frequency regime into the range where the combustion process interacts with the thermal wave in the liquid phase. The theory considered both gas and liquid-phase transient effects, involving a numerically integrated, first-order perturbation analysis. The experiment employed hydrazine as the test fuel, burning as a strand. With kinetic parameters fixed by steady burning rate measurements, the model gave good predictions of liquid-phase temperature distributions during steady combustion as well as the amplitude and phase of the oscillatory component of the burning rate in the presence of imposed pressure oscillations. The combustion response tends to peak in two frequency ranges; one corresponding to interaction with liquid-phase transient effects, which could be verified both theoretically and experimentally; the second corresponding to gas-phase transient effects, which could only be examined theoretically. Both ranges provide conditions where the amplifying power is sufficient to drive combustion instability.

A model to investigate the influence of suspended sediment on the mass transport of a pollutant in open channel flow

An explicit two-dimensional finite difference model, designed to investigate the influence of suspended sediment on the pollutant transport process, is presented. Specific attention is directed toward examining the role of suspended sediment in: (1) the turbulent vertical transport mechanism in a stratified flow, and (2) pollutant uptake due to sorption. Results presented indicate that suspended sediment plays a major role in the pollutant transport process, and subsequently, any meaningful attempt to model the fate of a pollutant in an alluvial channel must account for the presence of a suspended sediment concentration profile. Similarly, the vertical and longitudinal pollutant concentration distributions provided by the model may be utilized to improve upon the predictive capacities of existing water quality models.

Opening a new era in space

The overall payload planning aimed at initial projected use of the Space Transportation System (STS) which will establish a new capability for exploring and using space through operations of the Shuttle, Spacelab, and Interim Upper Stage (IUS) in the Eighties is reviewed, and the significance of this planning for science and technology is discussed. The first payloads will fly on the STS during Orbital Flight Tests (OFT) beginning in March 1979. Primary OFT objectives include verifying flight systems and the Shuttle's ability to accomodate various types of payloads in different mission modes. The STS schedule will build up to as many as 60 flights in 1984. The STS payloads will make contributions to the management on a global scale of the interrelationship of production, consumption, population growth, and pollution.

Videoconferencing via satellite. Opening Congress to the people: Technical report

The feasibility of using satellite videoconferencing as a mechanism for informed dialogue between Congressmen and constituents to strengthen the legislative process was evaluated. Satellite videoconferencing was defined as a two-way interactive television with the TV signals transmitted by satellite. With videoconferencing, one or more Congressmen in Washington, D. C. can see, hear and talk with groups of citizens at distant locations around the country. Simultaneously, the citizens can see, hear and talk with the Congressmen.

Design and calculated performance and cost of the ECAS Phase II open cycle MHD power generation system

A 2000 MWe MHD/steam plant for central station applications has been designed and costed as part of the Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS). This plant is fueled by Illinois No. 6 coal, rejects heat through mechanical draft wet cooling towers, and includes coal processing equipment, seed reprocessing, electrical inversion of the MHD generator output and emission controls to current EPA standards. It yields an estimated overall efficiency of 0.483 (7066 Btu/kWe-hr), a capital cost of $718 per kWe (1975 dollars), and a cost of electricity at 65% capacity factor of 32 mills per kWe-hr. If the assumed life and reliability could be achieved with these performance parameters, the MHD system should prove attractive.

Seasat-A opens new phase in earth observations

The data output of the Seasat-A, the first satellite designed specifically for oceanographic observation, is described. Wave height and direction, ice distribution, surface wind speed and direction, ocean-surface temperature, and atmospheric water content will be monitored by the satellite. Imaging radar, microwave scatterometer, microwave radiometer and visual and infrared radiometer experiments are included in the Seasat-A observing program. Two types of orbits have been developed: a near-repeat cycle of three days, and a near-repeat cycle of 25 days. Both orbit types offer fine coverage (18.5 km crossing separations) of the earth. Synthetic aperture radar data on computer-compatible tapes and geophysical data records available through the Seasat-A mission are described.

The relation of open magnetic structures to solar wind flow

A study has been made of solar wind observations and models of the low-coronal magnetic field of the sun during the Skylab mission. Potential sources of solar wind plasma have been identified and in most cases systematically associated with observed solar wind flow features. The study pinpoints the problems of associating significant portions of the observed solar wind with sources outside coronal holes, although such associations are strongly suggested by the models. The phenomenological relationship between observed high solar wind speed at 1 AU and small coronal field divergence near the sun is examined and found to be well established but causally inconclusive in light of models of the outer heliosphere.

Evaluation of the ECAS open cycle MHD power plant design

The Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS) MHD/steam power plant is described. The NASA critical evaluation of the design is summarized. Performance of the MHD plant is compared to that of the other type ECAS plant designs on the basis of efficiency and the 30-year levelized cost of electricity. Techniques to improve the plant design and the potential performance of lower technology plants requiring shorter development time and lower development cost are then discussed.

Open ocean tide modelling

Two trends evident in global tidal modelling since the first GEOP conference in 1972 are described. The first centers on the incorporation of terms for ocean loading and gravitational self attraction into Laplace's tidal equations. The second centers on a better understanding of the problem of near resonant modelling and the need for realistic maps of tidal elevation for use by geodesists and geophysicists. Although new models still show significant differences, especially in the South Atlantic, there are significant similarities in many of the world's oceans. This allows suggestions to be made for future locations for bottom pressure gauge measurements. Where available, estimates of M2 tidal dissipation from the new models are significantly lower than estimates from previous models.

Data Requirements for Oceanic Processes in the Open Ocean, Coastal Zone, and Cryosphere

The type of information system that is needed to meet the requirements of ocean, coastal, and polar region users was examined. The requisite qualities of the system are: (1) availability, (2) accessibility, (3) responsiveness, (4) utility, (5) continuity, and (6) NASA participation. The system would not displace existing capabilities, but would have to integrate and expand the capabilities of existing systems and resolve the deficiencies that currently exist in producer-to-user information delivery options.

Manned remote work station development article. Volume 2: Simulation requirements. Appendix A: Open cherry picker development test articles specification

A manned remote work station (MRWS) mission scenario, broken down into the three time phases was selected as the basis for analysis of the MRWS flight article requirements and concepts. The mission roles for the three time phases, supporting tradeoff and evaluation studies, was used to identify key issues requiring simulation. The MRWS is discussed in terms of its capability to perform such operations as support of Spacelab experiments, servicing and repair of satellites, and construction. Future considerations for the use of the MRWS are also given.

Reduction of unsteady wind torques on an open port airborne optical turret

Techniques for reducing the unsteady torques acting on the inner gimbal of a turret were developed. The reductions in the unsteady torques were obtained by using fixes that alter undesirable flow characteristics or change the acoustic properties of the turret cavity. These fixes were designed to be used in the subsonic and transonic flow regimes. The flow field about the turret generally three dimensional and turbulent, and shock waves formed because of the rapid acceleration of the compressible gas about the blunt turret. The situation was further complicated by the presence of the cavity flow, and the fact that the mouth of the cavity must sweep through a wide angular variation relative to the direction of the freestream. Results indicate that significant reductions of the unsteady pressures measured in the turret cavity could be obtained by the use of porous wind screens around the aperature of the cavity mouth.

The young open cluster NGC 3293 and its relation to Car OB1 and the Carina Nebula complex

On the basis of visible evidence, NGC 3293 appears to be associated with a number of objects in the Carina Nebula complex. UBVRI photoelectric photometry and MK-spectral specifications are presented for a large number of stars in this cluster and its surroundings (Car OB1). Over 70 cluster members with spectral types earlier than B9 are identified. Star counts indicate that the expected number of members brighter than V = 18 is 297 plus or minus 9. The cluster appears to be situated just in front of a dense dust lane, which itself appears to be part of the dust complex emanating from the center of the Carina Nebula.
