Large Electrochemical Storage Systems

Study released in 1979 assesses status of electrochemical energy storage for power plants that utilize Suns heat to drive electric generators. Major conclusion was that familiar lead/acid battery is only existing cell to meet needs for near-term demonstration programs.

The algebraic theory of latent projectors in lambda matrices

Multivariable systems such as a finite-element model of vibrating structures, control systems, and large-scale systems are often formulated in terms of differential equations which give rise to lambda matrices. The present investigation is concerned with the formulation of the algebraic theory of lambda matrices and the relationship of latent roots, latent vectors, and latent projectors to the eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and eigenprojectors of the companion form. The chain rule for latent projectors and eigenprojectors for the repeated latent root or eigenvalues is given.

Iterative algorithms for large sparse linear systems on parallel computers

Algorithms for assembling in parallel the sparse system of linear equations that result from finite difference or finite element discretizations of elliptic partial differential equations, such as those that arise in structural engineering are developed. Parallel linear stationary iterative algorithms and parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms are developed for solving these systems. In addition, a model for comparing parallel algorithms on array architectures is developed and results of this model for the algorithms are given.

Development of deployable structures for large space platform systems, part 1

Eight deployable platform design objectives were established: autodeploy/retract; fully integrated utilities; configuration variability; versatile payload and subsystem interfaces; structural and packing efficiency; 1986 technology readiness; minimum EVA/RMS; and Shuttle operational compatibility.

Development of deployable structures for large space platform systems, volume 1

Generic deployable spacecraft configurations and deployable platform systems concepts were identified. Sizing, building block concepts, orbiter packaging, thermal analysis, cost analysis, and mass properties analysis as related to platform systems integration are considered. Technology needs are examined and the major criteria used in concept selection are delineated. Requirements for deployable habitat modules, tunnels, and OTV hangars are considered.

Development of deployable structures for large space platform systems. Volume 1: Executive summary

Candidate deployable linear platform system concepts suitable for development to technology readiness by 1986 are reviewed. The systems concepts were based on trades of alternate deployable/retractable structure concepts, integration of utilities, and interface approaches for docking and assembly of payloads and subsystems. The deployable volume studies involved generation of concepts for deployable volumes which could be used as unpressurized or pressurized hangars, habitats and interconnecting tunnels. Concept generation emphasized using flexible materials and deployable truss structure technology.

On the controllability and control law design for an orbiting large flexible antenna system

The controllability and control law synthesis based on a finite element model of the Hoop/Column orbiting antenna system is considered. Graph theoretic techniques are employed to analyze the controllability of the system for posible proposed actuator arrangements which include torquers and point actuators along the mast and a single actuator placed on the hoop assembly. Once controllability is established for a given combination of number and location of actuators, the synthesis of control laws is based on an application of the linear regulator theory and also pole placement techniques. In general, surface torsion and feed mast torsion are among modes having the longest time constants. System transient performance is noticeably degraded when the hoop actuator is not included.

Development of deployable structures for large space platform systems. Volume 1: Executive summary

The preponderance of study effort was devoted toward the deployable platform systems study which culminated in the detailed design of a ground test article for future development testing. This design is representative of a prototype square-truss, single-fold building-block design that can construct deployable platform structures. This prototype design was selected through a comprehensive and traceable selection process applied to eight competitive designs. The selection process compared the competitive designs according to seven major selection criteria, i.e., design versatility, cost, thermal stability, meteoroid impact significance, reliability, performance predictability, and orbiter integration suitability. In support of the foregoing, a materials data base, and platform systems technology development needs were established. An erectable design of an OTV hangar was selected and recommended for further design development. This design was selected from five study-developed competitive single-fold and double-fold designs including hard-shell and inflatable designs. Also, two deployable manned module configurations, i.e., a hard-shell and an inflatable design were each developed to the same requirements as the composite of two Space station baseline habitat modules.

Environmental effects on the dynamics and control of an orbiting large flexible antenna system

Solar radiation pressure on the vibrating antenna structure, temperature gradients induced by solar heating, and stabilizing gravity-gradient torques were considered when the linear regulator theory was used to obtain orientation and shape control of a hoop/column antenna system being considered for the land mobile satellite system. A finite element model of the antenna system which includes all six rigid modes and seven flexible modes was used. Results show that the environmental disturbances affect only the rigid modes of the structure. The effect of solar radiation pressure interacting with the vibrating system is smaller than the solar radiation pressure acting on the thermally deformed structure. To reduce control effort in order to maintain shape and orientation, thermal deformations must be minimized in the preliminary design of the system.

Iterative solution of large, sparse linear systems on a static data flow architecture - Performance studies

The applicability of static data flow architectures to the iterative solution of sparse linear systems of equations is investigated. An analytic performance model of a static data flow computation is developed. This model includes both spatial parallelism, concurrent execution in multiple PE's, and pipelining, the streaming of data from array memories through the PE's. The performance model is used to analyze a row partitioned iterative algorithm for solving sparse linear systems of algebraic equations. Based on this analysis, design parameters for the static data flow architecture as a function of matrix sparsity and dimension are proposed.

Spline-based distributed system identification with application to large space antennas

A parameter and state estimation technique for distributed models is demonstrated through the solution of a problem generic to large space antenna system identification. Assuming the position of the reflective surface of the maypole (hoop/column) antenna to be approximated by the static two-dimensional, stretched-membrane partial differential equation with variable-stiffness coefficient functions, a spline-based approximation procedure is described that estimates the shape and stiffness functions from data set observations. For given stiffness functions, the Galerkin projection with linear spline-based functions is applied to project the distributed problem onto a finite-dimensional subspace wherein algebraic equations exist for determining a static shape (state) prediction. The stiffness functions are then parameterized by cubic splines and the parameters estimated by an output error technique. Numerical results are presented for data descriptive of a 100-m-diameter maypole antenna.
