A rapidly curable liquid gel for collecting an analyte from a sampling surface includes a polymer precursor mixture including a monomer and/or an oligomer; and an additive to enhance extraction of the analyte from the sampling surface. A kit for collecting an analyte from a sampling surface may include the rapidly curable liquid gel and a portable device for rapidly curing the gel. The rapidly curable liquid gel is cured to thereby form a peelable sampling film, and the sampling film is removed from the sampling surface, thereby collecting the analyte. In one embodiment, the rapidly curable liquid gel is UV-curable, the polymer precursor mixture further includes a photoinitiator compound, and the portable device includes a UV light source configured to emit UV light of a wavelength range absorbed by the photoinitiator compound.
The luminance of a transmission mode X-ray scintillator diamond plate is dominated by induced defect centers having an excited state lifetime less than 10 msec, and in embodiments less than 1 msec, 100 usec, 10 used, 1 used, 100 nsec, or even 50 nsec, thereby providing enhanced X-ray luminance response and an X-ray flux dynamic range that is linear with X-ray flux on a log-log scale over at least three orders of magnitude. The diamond plate can be a single crystal having a dislocation density of less than 104 per square centimeter, and having surfaces that are ion milled instead of mechanically polished. The defect centers can be SiV centers induced by silicon doping during CVD diamond formation, and/or NV0 centers formed by nitrogen doping followed by applying electron beam irradiation of the diamond plate and annealing.
Ccurrent natural gas condensing furnaces generate substantial acidic condensate and SOx/NOx/CO/HC/methane emissions, causing long-term environment issues related to air, water and soil. Acidic condensate occurs when flue gases within the furnaces cool down below the dew points of acidic gases, which upon condensation, combine with water vapor to produce acidic solutions. The acidic condensate causes serious corrosion and fouling problems in natural gas condensing furnaces. This paper presents a novel solution to use an advanced adsorption technology based on monolithic acidic gas trap (AGT) adsorbers for SOx trapping, NOx redox, and formic acid/CO/HC/methane oxidation, enabling a new natural gas furnace with utra-clean flue gas and neutral condensate. When the AGT adsorber is appropriately integrated with natural gas furnaces, the acidic gases of SOx, NOx and formic gas/CO/HC will be continuously adsorbed, redoxed or oxidized, respectively, from the flue gas during a regular heating season, except for occasional regeneration activities for SOx trapping. In the paper, we present results from a prototype furnace employing the novel AGT component, which enables a pH of the condensate =7, NOx emissions of 1-2 nanograms/joule and an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 96%, providing a cost-effective technology for condensing furnaces that is eco-friendly to the environment.

A compact particle accelerator can include two or more cavities disposed along an axis of the particle accelerator, each of which is coupled to two or more drivers. The accelerator can also include a power supply coupled to the two or more drivers such that a particle beam traveling along the axis is accelerated. The power supply can be an interface with a commercial power outlet, battery power, or a combination thereof depending upon the use case. Example configurations of the accelerator include hand held or mobile devices that are capable of delivering up to and greater than a 1 MeV electron beam.
Improved electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide is provided with a surface-oxidized carbon catalyst. The carbon can be, for example, carbon black or carbon nanotubes. The oxidation of the carbon can be performed, for example, by heating the carbon in nitric acid, or by heating the carbon in a base. The resulting carbon catalyst can have a distinctive oxygen is peak in its X-ray photoelectron spectrum.
According to some aspects, a transmissive and all-dielectric optical component/limiter with great cutoff efficiency using Vanadium Dioxide (VO 2 ) as the active component is disclosed. In some embodiments, Vanadium dioxide is used for an optical limiter due to the large contrast in optical constants upon undergoing the semiconductor to metal phase transition. When triggered optically, this transition occurs within 60 fs, making the device suitable for an ultrafast laser environment. In addition, the phase transition threshold is tunable by applying stress or doping; therefore, the device cutoff intensity can be adjusted to fulfill specific requirements.
