Feasibility study of using satellites for a disaster warning system

The development of requirements for the Disaster Warning System (DWS) was investigated in relation to the National Weather Service. Conceptual communication traffic flow patterns for the future of the NWS are studied to determine the impact of the DWS on the MWS. The planned warning systems, and satellite communications are discussed along with data collection, and communication services.

Experiment to evaluate feasibility of utilizing Skylab-EREP remote sensing data for tectonic analysis of the Bighorn Mountains region, Wyoming-Montana

The author has identified the following significant results. Analysis of SL-3, S-190A, and S-190B color frames indicates two sets of linears obliquely cutting across the east-west trending Owl Creek-Bridger uplifts. A northwest set of faults and folds has been mapped previously but the imagery indicates some changes and addition of detail can be made. A less pronounced east-northeast set of linear alignments (drainage segments, lithologic contacts, possible faults) extends into the southeast part of the Big Horn Basin.

Feasibility of coherent X-ray production by X-ray pumping

It is suggested that coherent X-rays can be produced by inverting the electron population in a suitable target, such as Li, through irradiation with X-rays generated by fast electrons traversing an electromagnetic field (as in a storage ring). Conditions to be satisfied by target and radiation parameters are stated, and examples given.

A feasibility study of unmanned rendezvous and docking in Mars orbit: Midterm review

The ascent, rendezvous, docking and sample transfer operations in a potential MSSR mission that uses the Mars orbital rendezvous mode are considered. In order that the design choices made for these operations remain compatible with the rest of the mission, the impact on the Earth launch, Mars landing and orbiting and Earth return phase are also being assessed. The selection and description of a preliminary baseline concept are presented.

Feasibility and tradeoff study of an aeromaneuvering orbit-to-orbit shuttle (AMOOS)

This study establishes that configurations satisfying the aeromaneuvering orbit-to-orbit shuttle (AMOOS) requirements can be designed with performance capabilities in excess of the purely propulsive space tug. In view of this improved potential of the AMOOS vehicle over the propulsive space tug concept it is recommended that the AMOOS studies be advanced to a stage comparable to those performed for the space tug. This advancement is needed in particular in areas that are either peculiar to AMOOS or not addressed in sufficient detail in these studies to date. These areas include the thermodynamics problems, navigation and guidance, operations and economics analyses, subsystems and interfaces. The aeromaneuvering orbit-to-orbit shuttle (AMOOS) is evaluated as a candidate reusable third stage to the two-stage earth-to-orbit shuttle (EOS). AMOOS has the potential for increased payload capability over the purely propulsive space tug by trading a savings in consumables for an increase in structural and thermal protection system (TPS) mass.

A study of the feasibility of directly applying gas generator systems to space shuttle mechanical functions

This study examined the current status and potential application of pyrotechnic gas generators and energy convertors for the space shuttle program. While most pyrotechnic devices utilize some form of linear actuation, only limited use of rotary actuators has been observed. This latter form of energy conversion, using a vane-type actuator as optimum, offers considerable potential in the area of servo, as well as non-servo systems, and capitalizes on a means of providing prolonged operating times. Pyrotechnic devices can often be shown to provide the optimum means of attaining a truly redundant back-up to a primary, non-pyrotechnic system.

Feasibility study of a swept frequency electromagnetic probe (SWEEP) using inductive coupling for the determination of subsurface conductivity of the earth and water prospecting in arid regions

Techniques developed for electromagnetic probing of the lunar interior, and techniques developed for the generation of high power audio frequencies were combined to make practical a magnetic inductive coupling system for the rapid measurement of ground conductivity profiles which are helpful when prospecting for the presence and quality of subsurface water. A system which involves the measurement of the direction, intensity, and time phase of the magnetic field observed near the surface of the earth at a distance from a horizontal coil energized so as to create a field that penetrates the earth was designed and studied to deduce the conductivity and stratification of the subsurface. Theoretical studies and a rudimentary experiment in an arid region showed that the approach is conceptually valid and that this geophysical prospecting technique can be developed for the economical exploration of subterranean water resources.

Feasibility of rotating fluidized bed reactor for rocket propulsion

The rotating fluidized bed reactor concept is outlined, and its application to rocket propulsion is discussed. Experimental results obtained indicate that minimum fluidization correlations commonly in use for 1-g beds can also be applied to multiple-g beds. It was found that for a low thrust system (20,000 lbf) the fuel particle size and/or particle stress play a limiting role on performance. The superiority of U-233 as a fuel for this type of rocket engine is clearly demonstrated in the analysis. The maximum thrust/weight ratio for a 90,000N thrust engine was found to be approximately 65N/kg.

Experimental feasibility study of the application of magnetic suspension techniques to large-scale aerodynamic test facilities

Based on the premises that (1) magnetic suspension techniques can play a useful role in large-scale aerodynamic testing and (2) superconductor technology offers the only practical hope for building large-scale magnetic suspensions, an all-superconductor three-component magnetic suspension and balance facility was built as a prototype and was tested successfully. Quantitative extrapolations of design and performance characteristics of this prototype system to larger systems compatible with existing and planned high Reynolds number facilities have been made and show that this experimental technique should be particularly attractive when used in conjunction with large cryogenic wind tunnels.
