Preliminary results of fast neutron treatments in carcinoma of the pancreas

A group of 30 patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas including some patients with very advanced disease, were treated with the so-called mixed beam modality employing photon treatments three times per week and neutron treatments twice a week. Two hundred Rads or equivalent Rads (RBE 3.3) were given in daily fractions aiming at a total dose of 6000 Rads in 6 to 8 weeks. The treatments were well tolerated and significant palliation was achieved in 26 to 30 cases. Twelve months survival was 33 percent with a median survival of 7 months or 210 days. Treatment techniques and localization procedures are discussed.

A Navier-Stokes fast solver for turbulence modeling applications

A computer code for the evaluation and/or optimization of the predicative potential of second order turbulent closure models in simple two dimensional flow configurations is discussed. A procedure for the numerical solution of the steady constant property Navier-Stokes equations are described together with algebraic, one dimensional and two dimensional equations of turbulence closure models. Four turbulence models are compared with several sets of experimental data. The effects of initial conditions and boundary conditions are also described. The effects of purely numerical parameters, such as mesh size, boundary locations, and convergence criteria are presented.

A fast, space-efficient average-case algorithm for the 'Greedy' Triangulation of a point set, and a proof that the Greedy Triangulation is not approximately optimal

The paper addresses the problem of how to find the Greedy Triangulation (GT) efficiently in the average case. It is noted that the problem is open whether there exists an efficient approximation algorithm to the Optimum Triangulation. It is first shown how in the worst case, the GT may be obtained in time O(n to the 3) and space O(n). Attention is then given to how the algorithm may be slightly modified to produce a time O(n to the 2), space O(n) solution in the average case. Finally, it is mentioned that Gilbert has found a worst case solution using totally different techniques that require space O(n to the 2) and time O(n to the 2 log n).

A fast semi-implicit algorithm for problems of mixed type

Certain physical processes are modeled by partial differential equations which are parabolic over part of the domain and elliptic over the remainder. A family of semi-implicit algorithms which are well suited to initial-boundary value problems of this mixed type is discussed. One important feature of these algorithms is the use of an approximate inverse for the solution of the implicit linear system. A strong error analysis results in an estimate of the total error as a function of approximate inverse error e and time step h.

Detection of a fast, intense and unusual gamma-ray transient

An unusual transient pulse of greater than approximately 50 keV photons was detected on March 5, 1979 by the gamma-ray burst sensor network using nine space probes and satellites. Its characteristics are unlike those of the known variety of gamma-ray bursts and therefore suggest that it was formed either by a completely different origin species or in a very different manner. In a companion Letter it is identified with the LMC supernova remnant N49.

Detection of a corona of fast oxygen atoms during solar maximum

A series of twilight interferometric observations of the near infrared O(+)(2P) doublets at 7320 and 7330 A between April 1979 and October 1979 detected excessive amounts of emission at shadow heights above 550 km. The scale height deduced from the vertical brightness profile determined from data taken on September 26, 1979, when the 10.7-cm flux was 231, showed a marked increase above 550 km. The equivalent temperature was estimated to be 4000 K or higher. Observations of the emission line shape with the high-resolution capability of the interferometer substantiated these results by a very apparent progressive broadening of the emission profile between times of low and high shadow height. It is concluded from these results that there exists an atomic oxygen corona overlying the thermosphere during the solar maximum period.

Fast Holographic Comparator

Comparator is integrated-optical system constructed on a LiNb03sub. waveguide chip. Only the laser, lens and detector are external to chip. Aluminized surface gratings serve as input coupler and beam splitter. Light beams striking edges are returned by ordinary total internal reflection. Three operating modes are possible: A "screening" mode, an "identification" mode and a novel "self-subtraction" mode.

Silicon Ingot Casting - Heat Exchanger Method (HEM). Multi-Wire Slicing - Fixed Abrasive Slicing Technique (Fast). Phase 4 Silicon Sheet Growth Development for the Large Area Sheet Task of the Low-Cost Solar Array Project

The crystallinity of large HEM silicon ingots as a function of heat flow conditions is investigated. A balanced heat flow at the bottom of the ingot restricts spurious nucleation to the edge of the melted-back seed in contact with the crucible. Homogeneous resistivity distribution over all the ingot has been achieved. The positioning of diamonds electroplated on wirepacks used to slice silicon crystals is considered. The electroplating of diamonds on only the cutting edge is described and the improved slicing performance of these wires evaluated. An economic analysis of value added costs of HEM ingot casting and band saw sectioning indicates the projected add on cost of HEM is well below the 1986 allocation.

High-current, fast-switching transistor development

The design, wafer-processing techniques, and various measurements which include forward safe operating area, dc characteristics, and switching times are described for a larger-diameter (33) transistor. An improved base contact for equalizing the base-emitter voltage at high currents was developed along with an improved emitter contact preform which increases the silicon area available for current conduction. The electrical performance achieved is consistent with the proposed optimum design.

Molecule formation and infrared emission in fast interstellar shocks. II - Dissociation speeds for interstellar shock waves

The postshock destruction of molecules is examined, including the processes of (1) collisions with neutral hydrogen atoms and molecules, (2) electronic collisions, and (3) neutral chemical reactions with atoms, particularly atomic hydrogen. By using conservative estimates of collisional dissociation rates from individual vibrational states, it is found that process (1) leads to the destruction of molecular hydrogen behind shocks with speeds equal to or greater than 25 km/s if the preshock molecular gas has hydrogen nucleus densities of equal to or greater than 10 to the 4th/cu cm. At lower densities (100 per cu cm), destruction occurs for shock speeds equal to or greater than 50 km/s and process (2) dominates. Dissociation of molecules such as CO, H2O, and O2 follows the destruction of H2, as the resultant hydrogen atoms chemically dissociate the metal atoms from their bonds (process 3) in the hot postshock gas. These results demonstrate that many of the observed high-speed interstellar molecules, if shock accelerated, must have dissociated and reformed in the postshock gas.

Fast ion transport in silver halide solid solutions and multiphase systems

The incorporation of homovalent ions, e.g., I(-) in AgBr, leads to a substantial increase in ionic conductivity sigma. The charge compensation concept does not explain the enhancement. AgBr + 30 mol. % AgI exhibits sigma approximately 7/omega/cm at 380 C, which is approximately 170% larger than that of alpha-AgI, the best known superionic conductor, at its melting point. The purely elastic displacement caused by the foreign ion is suggested to be the origin of such a unique behavior. Furthermore, AgI-AgBr two-phase systems display sigma approximately 10 to the 3rd times higher than predicted by the classical theories.

Fast transforms for decoding Reed-Solomon codes

In the paper it is shown that the Chinese remainder theorem when coupled with a modification of Winograd's method can be used to compute Fourier-like transforms over GF (s super m), where m = 2, 3, . . . , 8. These new transform techniques are to decode Reed-Solomon codes of block length 2 super m -1. The results are shown to be more efficient than the more conventional method.

Observations of fast oscillations in SS Cygni

High-speed photometric observations of the dwarf nova SS Cygni have been made using an ultraviolet and blue sensitive photomultiplier. Rapid oscillations were detected over an interval of 7 days. The period of the oscillations passed through a minimum of 7.29 s, the shortest period yet observed in a dwarf nova. The signal was spread in frequency by an amount larger than required by the slow evolution of the period. The data are considered from the viewpoint of several models.

Development of a fast ion mass spectrometer for space research

An ion mass spectrometer having a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer and either a cylindrical or spherical electrostatic analyzer is described. The instrument has two nested channels and a postacceleration between the electrostatic and E bar x B bar analyzers for wide ranges of energy and mass responses. It is noted that the dual-channel construction not only doubles the data acquisition rate but also permits a reversal of the electrostatic field orientation in the inner channel for lighter ions. The outer channel is then optimized for ions of medium to high mass numbers, resulting in increased mass resolution for such heavy ions. When combined with a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer, a 90-deg-deflection angle spherical electrostatic analyzer provides an extremely wide viewing angle. The angular distribution of ions can be derived from such geometry if a position-sensitive resistive anode or a detector array is used at the exit aperture. Details on the principles of operation, the instrument design, and calibration are presented.

Addendum to 'A new hybrid algorithm for computing a fast discrete Fourier transform'

The reported investigation represents a continuation of a study conducted by Reed and Truong (1979), who proposed a hybrid algorithm for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The proposed technique employs a Winograd-type algorithm in conjunction with the Mersenne prime-number theoretic transform to perform a DFT. The implementation of the technique involves a considerable number of additions. The new investigation shows an approach which can reduce the number of additions significantly. It is proposed to use Winograd's algorithm for computing the Mersenne prime-number theoretic transform in the transform portion of the hybrid algorithm.
