Online assessment of a distributed processor

ORT (Operational Readiness Test) software allows one engineer to test readiness of 64 minicomputers and their peripherals from single console. Software makes roll call of computers and peripherals via common data buffer to check readiness of system in morning "wake up" or at other important times. Subsystems are tested in parallel to save time. "Watchdog" terminates test of any system that does not respond in time, so one failed system does not halt test sequence. Entire rollcall is complete in about 15 minutes. Software is designed for Space Shuttle prelaunch checkout, but approach should interest users of similar equipment.

The Landsat-D/Global Positioning System experiment

The paper presents data requirements, tests, and operational procedures to validate the receiver/processor assembly (R/PA) data to the 150 meter level and to calibrate the full capability of the R/PA to the 10 meter level for the Landsat-D/Global Positioning System experiment. Current work includes designing the software for the validation and calibration processes, determining the best methods of calibration using the Ground Space Tracking Data Network (GSTDN), and determining the tracking schedule for GSTDN data to obtain best orbital accuracy.

As-built design specification for proportion estimate software subsystem

The Proportion Estimate Processor evaluates four estimation techniques in order to get an improved estimate of the proportion of a scene that is planted in a selected crop. The four techniques to be evaluated were provided by the techniques development section and are: (1) random sampling; (2) proportional allocation, relative count estimate; (3) proportional allocation, Bayesian estimate; and (4) sequential Bayesian allocation. The user is given two options for computation of the estimated mean square error. These are referred to as the cluster calculation option and the segment calculation option. The software for the Proportion Estimate Processor is operational on the IBM 3031 computer.

The development version control and visibility subsystem

A prototype development version control and programming environment visibility subsystem (DVCS) is described. DVCS provides an implementation/management interface serving both the implementor and management. The DVCS provides the implementor listings annotated with change bars, detects errors in the block structure of the design and indicates when standards requiring the use of structured programming constructs in the design of software are violated.

Seasat synthetic-aperture radar data reduction using parallel programmable array processors

This paper presents a digital processing system that produces the Seasat synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The system consists of a SEL 32/77 host minicomputer and three AP-120B array processors. The partitioning of the SAR processing functions and the design of software modules is described. The rationale for selecting the parallel array processor architecture and the methodology for developing the parallel processing scheme on this system is described. This system attains a Seasat SAR data reduction speed of 2.5 h per 25-m resolution 4-look and 100 km x 100 km image frame. A preliminary performance evaluation of this parallel processing system and potential future applications for remote sensing data reduction are described.

Estimates of software size from state machine designs

The length, or size (in number of Source Lines of Code) of programs represented as state machines, it is demonstrated, can be reliably estimated in terms of the number of internal state machine variables.

Integrated verification and testing system (IVTS) for HAL/S programs

The IVTS is a large software system designed to support user-controlled verification analysis and testing activities for programs written in the HAL/S language. The system is composed of a user interface and user command language, analysis tools and an organized data base of host system files. The analysis tools are of four major types: (1) static analysis, (2) symbolic execution, (3) dynamic analysis (testing), and (4) documentation enhancement. The IVTS requires a split HAL/S compiler, divided at the natural separation point between the parser/lexical analyzer phase and the target machine code generator phase. The IVTS uses the internal program form (HALMAT) between these two phases as primary input for the analysis tools. The dynamic analysis component requires some way to 'execute' the object HAL/S program. The execution medium may be an interpretive simulation or an actual host or target machine.

Adapting iterative algorithms for solving large sparse linear systems for efficient use on the CDC CYBER 205

Adapting and designing mathematical software to achieve optimum performance on the CYBER 205 is discussed. Comments and observations are made in light of recent work done on modifying the ITPACK software package and on writing new software for vector supercomputers. The goal was to develop very efficient vector algorithms and software for solving large sparse linear systems using iterative methods.

Software fault-tolerance by design diversity DEDIX: A tool for experiments

The use of multiple versions of a computer program, independently designed from a common specification, to reduce the effects of an error is discussed. If these versions are designed by independent programming teams, it is expected that a fault in one version will not have the same behavior as any fault in the other versions. Since the errors in the output of the versions are different and uncorrelated, it is possible to run the versions concurrently, cross-check their results at prespecified points, and mask errors. A DEsign DIversity eXperiments (DEDIX) testbed was implemented to study the influence of common mode errors which can result in a failure of the entire system. The layered design of DEDIX and its decision algorithm are described.

Design optimization of the 34-meter DSN-NCP antennas

The new NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) 34-m-diameter azimuth-elevation (Az-El) antenna structure is an example of an essentially computer-automated design. In addition to pivotal comptuer Lagrange multiplier design optimization software, much of the associated pre- and post-processing was also performed by computer. The construction of one of these antennas at Goldstone, California, is well advanced and will be completed this summer. A second installation is in progress in Australia. Both atennas will be used primarily for spacecraft tracking and will operate in the 8.5-GHz, 3.5-cm (1.4-in.) wavelength microwave frequency.

A Generalized Method for Automatic Downhand and Wirefeed Control of a Welding Robot and Positioner

A generalized method for controlling a six degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot and a two DOF positioner used for arc welding operations is described. The welding path is defined in the part reference frame, and robot/positioner joint angles of the equivalent eight DOF serial linkage are determined via an iterative solution. Three algorithms are presented: the first solution controls motion of the eight DOF mechanism such that proper torch motion is achieved while minimizing the sum-of-squares of joint displacements; the second algorithm adds two constraint equations to achieve torch control while maintaining part orientation so that welding occurs in the downhand position; and the third algorithm adds the ability to control the proper orientation of a wire feed mechanism used in gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding operations. A verification of these algorithms is given using ROBOSIM, a NASA developed computer graphic simulation software package design for robot systems development.

Development and flight test experiences with a flight-crucial digital control system

Engineers and scientists in the advanced fighter technology integration (AFTI) F-16 program investigated the integration of emerging technologies into an advanced fighter aircraft. AFTI's three major technologies included: flight-crucial digital control, decoupled aircraft flight control, and integration of avionics, flight control, and pilot displays. In addition to investigating improvements in fighter performance, researchers studied the generic problems confronting the designers of highly integrated flight-crucial digital control. An overview is provided of both the advantages and problems of integration digital control systems. Also, an examination of the specification, design, qualification, and flight test life-cycle phase is provided. An overview is given of the fault-tolerant design, multimoded decoupled flight control laws, and integrated avionics design. The approach to qualifying the software and system designs is discussed, and the effects of design choices on system qualification are highlighted.
