Supply voltage decoupling circuits for voltage droop mitigation

Circuits and methods are provided for utilizing decoupling capacitors to mitigate voltage droop on power supply lines of a power distribution network. A power supply line is capacitively decoupled using a first decoupling capacitor connected to the power supply line and charged to a first voltage level of the power supply line. A second decoupling capacitor is pre-charged to a second voltage level greater than the first voltage level and held in standby. A control circuit determines or predicts an occurrence of a droop event in which the first voltage decreases to a level which is at or below a droop threshold voltage level, and selectively connects the pre-charged second decoupling capacitor to the power supply line to source additional boosting current through discharging of the second decoupling capacitor and thereby capacitively decouple the power supply line using the higher second voltage and additional boosting current.

Inductive circuit sensor system and method

An inductive circuit sensor system and method for monitoring an electromagnetic signal path through a circuit is shown. A protected element or door is movably positionable adjacent to the stationary element or frame in a monitored position. A conductive sensor pattern element is connected to a pair of inductive coils. The pattern element is a conductive wire traversing a predetermined cross-section of the door. The frame has a transmitting coil in communication with a microcontroller. The transmitting coil is coupled with the first coil and a receiving coil is coupled with the second coil. The transmitting coil receives a signal from the microcontroller and couples the signal to the pattern element. The signal is in communication with a receiving port on the microcontroller. The microcontroller is programmed to compare the signal from the transmit port with the signal at the receiving port.

Detection of an internal short circuit in a battery

An electrical device comprises a battery cell; a pressure sensor for measuring swelling forces of the battery cell, optionally with voltage, temperature and current sensors, and a battery management system including a controller. The controller executes a program to: (i) determine a reference swelling force corresponding to a reference electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at an earlier reference time, (ii) determine a second swelling force corresponding to a second electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at a later second time, and (iii) determine whether a risk of internal short circuit of the battery cell exists by comparing a reference level of the reference electrical signal and a signal representative of the second electrical signal. When the signal representative of the second electrical signal exceeds the reference level of the reference electrical signal by a threshold amount, a risk of internal short circuit of the cell exists.

ML-ACCEPT: Machine-Learning-enhanced Automated Circuit Configuration and Evaluation of Power Converters

This project, ML-ACCEPT, took a significant step toward achieving the first objective of the DIFFERENTIATE program: to help engineers to more rapidly and cost-effectively consider a wider range of more novel concepts before selecting an engineering-optimal architecture for high-fidelity detailed design and evaluation. Compared to existing methods, the ML-ACCEPT project investigated innovative technologies to make the design of power converters more cost-effective and time-efficient by i) integrating recent breakthroughs in ML, power electronics, simulation software, and optimization to research, develop, and developed a suite of ML-enhanced hypothesis generation tools for power converter design; and ii) facilitating the integration of the proposed software tools into existing power-converter design work-flows. Some existing tools for power-converter design have a certain level of intelligence to aid the design process, but to our knowledge none of them has ML-enhanced capability of automating the electrical circuit design process by selecting, configuring, and tailoring the individual components that enable available resources (e.g., high-voltage DC power) to be converted to the desired output (e.g., lower-voltage DC power with a desired voltage ripple), subject to application-specific (e.g., plasma generation and automotive applications) thermal and packaging considerations. The state-of-the-art circuit design of power converters is still heavily reliant on human experts to select the optimal topology and search for design parameters with human’s experience and intuitions, which can be very time-consuming, inefficient, and labor intensive. The team is composed of University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Modelon Inc., and lighthouse customers.

Multi-purpose quantum laboratories from superconducting circuits

Superconducting circuits (SCs) are the cornerstone of modern quantum technology, enabling scalable computing through coherent control of macroscopic quantum states. Through a legacy that predates modern quantum computing, SCs have emerged as high-precision instruments for discovery. In this review, we highlight the role of SCs as general-purpose quantum laboratories, outlining the emerging landscape of correlated matter-circuit science. We review and unify the capabilities of superconducting quantum hardware across condensed matter, high energy and quantum information sciences. We trace the technical evolution of these architectures, illustrating how their foundational development has culminated in a toolkit for resolving the complexities of macroscopic quantum states.

DC Circuit Breakers: A Technology Development Status Survey

DC circuit breakers (DCCBs) play a significant role in obtaining the reliability and stability of DC power systems. Selective and fast isolating of faults minimizes the power supply outages to end electricity users and protects the power converters implemented in the DC system. During the last decades, DCCBs have been deeply investigated in industry and academia. There has been impressive progress in terms of efficiency, response time, power-density, lifetime, and electrical operating ratings. Introducing wide bandgap (WBG) devices further has motivated researchers to propose more efficient and novel topologies. This paper provides a point of reference and a background review for DCCBs from novel aspects, fulfilling absent parts in the literature. The elaborated subjects include current commutation circuitry, DCCBs trip-curves developments, newly added functions to DCCBs, as well as marketing analysis. The advancements of DCCBs are surveyed and development needs are recognized. This paper aims to identify the future research needs of DCCBs for emerging DC power systems.

Arylammonium-Assisted Reduction of the Open-Circuit Voltage Deficit in Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells: The Role of Suppressed Ion Migration

Surface treatment using large alkyl/aryl ammonium cations has demonstrated reduced open-circuit voltage (V OC ) deficits in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the origin of the improvements has been vaguely attributed to defect passivation. Here, we combine the microscopic probing of the local electrical properties, thermal admittance spectroscopic analysis, and first principles calculations to elucidate the critical role of arylammonium interface layers on suppressing the ion migration in wide-bandgap (WBG) PSCs. Our results reveal that arylammonium surface treatment using phenethylammonium iodide increases the activation energy barrier for ion migration on the surface, which suppresses the accumulation of charge defects at surface and grain boundaries (GBs), leading to reduced dark saturation current density in WBG PSCs. Furthermore, with device optimization, our champion 1.73-eV PSC delivers a power conversion efficiency of 19.07% with a V OC of 1.25 V, achieving a V OC -deficit of 0.48 V.
