Responses of gaseous sulfuric acid and particulate sulfate to reduced SO 2 concentration: A perspective from long-term measurements in Beijing

SO 2 concentration decreased rapidly in recent years in China due to the implementation of strict control policies by the government. Particulate sulfate ( p S O 4 2 - ) and gaseous H 2 SO 4 (SA) are two major products of SO 2 and they play important roles in the haze formation and new particle formation (NPF), respectively. We examined the change in p S O 4 2 - and SA concentrations in response to reduced SO 2 concentration using long-term measurement data in Beijing. Simulations from the Community Multiscale Air Quality model with a 2-D Volatility Basis Set (CMAQ/2D-VBS) were used for comparison. From 2013 to 2018, SO 2 concentration in Beijing decreased by ~81% (from 9.1 ppb to 1.7 ppb). p S O 4 2 - concentration in submicrometer particles decreased by ~60% from 2012–2013 (monthly average of ~10 μg·m - 3 ) to 2018–2019 (monthly average of ~4 μg·m - 3 ). Accordingly, the fraction of p S O 4 2 - in these particles decreased from 20–30% to <10%. Increased sulfur oxidation ratio was observed both in the measurements and the CMAQ/2D-VBS simulations. Despite the reduction in SO 2 concentration, there was no obvious decrease in SA concentration based on data from several measuring periods from 2008 to 2019. This was supported by the increased SA:SO 2 ratio with reduced SO 2 concentration and condensation sink. NPF frequency in Beijing between 2004 and 2019 remains relatively constant. Finally, this constant NPF frequency is consistent with the relatively stable SA concentration in Beijing, while different from some other cities where NPF frequency was reported to decrease with decreased SO 2 concentrations.

Microbial potentiometric sensor: A new approach to longstanding challenges

The underlying hypothesis of this study is that simple potentiometric measurements between sensing electrodes and a shared reference electrode - Microbial Potentiometric Sesnor (MPS) system - can be employed in a long-term, continuous mode of operation to resolve the spatial and temporal changes in environmental systems. To address the hypothesis, (1) a conceptual description of the MPS system and its postulated principle of operation are provided; (2) the MPS system performance is documented under controlled laboratory conditions; and (3) the capabilities of the MPS system are documented under quiescent and dynamic field condition. In a laboratory setting, the variability among different MPS signals was insignificant confirming the postulated high accuracy and reproducibility of the sensor performance. It also demonstrated statistically significant correlations with dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) sensors, while showing capabilities of operating under anoxic and anaerobic conditions. Regardless of their locations in the model wetland system, three MPS sensors functioned without interruption and cleaning for a period >2 years, and thus demonstrating long-term durability of the MPS technology. In real batch-wastewater treatment facility, the deployed MPS system signals were able to describe the organic carbon trends and correlate with each treatment phase in a cycle. Data reproducibility and reliability exceeded the expectations better describing the carbon treatment levels than the DO and ORP sensors (p < 4.4 × 10 –162 vs phase adjusted p < 3.0 × 10 –58 ). While MPS signals correlate with specific parameters that describe the local process or environments, it is more prudent to employ both the magnitude and pattern of a composite signal like the MPS signal describe the change to reflect any shift in the local environment. Finally, when compared to a baseline pattern, this change in signal magnitude and pattern reveals important information that can be employed to tailor and optimize any condition or process which involves microorganisms.

Adaptation to climate change through strategic integration of long fallow into cropping system in a dryland Mediterranean-type environment

The crop-growing region of Western Australia characterized by a Mediterranean-type climate is projected to become warmer and drier. Appropriate selection of crop sequences will be of importance to cope with these climatic changes for this largest grain-producing region of Australia. Through linking a widely used crop model (APSIM), 26 General Circulation Models (GCMs) with one Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP585) and economic analysis, we explored how the climate change would affect dryland wheat cropping and whether/how long fallow (the practice of leaving a field out of production for an entire growing season) could be integrated into wheat cropping system in Western Australia. The potential adaptation of long fallow into wheat system was assessed with four fixed rotations (fallow-wheat, fallow-wheat-wheat, fallow-wheat-wheat-wheat, and fallow-wheat-wheat-wheat-wheat) and four flexible sowing rule-based rotations (the land was fallowed if sowing rule was not met), compared with continuous wheat. The simulation results at four representing locations show that climate change would have negative impacts on both yield and economic return of continuous wheat cropping in Western Australia. Wheat after fallow out-yielded and out-profited wheat after wheat under future climate. But integrating fallow into wheat cropping systems with the above fixed rotations would lead to yield and economic loss. By contrast, cropping systems in which fallowing took place when sowing condition could not be met at a certain time would achieve comparable yield and economic return to continuous wheat, with wheat yield being only 5% less than continuous wheat and the gross margin being $12ha -1 more than continuous wheat averaged across locations. We highlight strategic integration of long fallow into cropping system in a dryland Mediterranean-type environment would have a great potential to cope with future climate change. These findings can be extended into other Mediterranean-type cropping regions in Australia and beyond.

Impacts of projected changes in sea surface temperature on ozone pollution in China toward carbon neutrality

The global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are expected to change diversely in the future under different climate scenarios, which will affect the near-surface ozone (O 3 ) distribution and concentration by influencing meteorological states and large-scale atmospheric circulation. Many countries have planned to reach carbon neutrality by the mid-21st century. Here in this study, the impacts of global and regional SST changes on near-surface O 3 concentrations in China in the middle of the 21st century under the carbon-neutral scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 1-1.9), compared with the high-emission scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5-8.5), and possible physical and chemical mechanisms are investigated using the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1). Under future climate change, the changes in SSTs in the carbon-neutral scenario relative to the high-emission scenario lead to a dipole change in near-surface O 3 concentrations in eastern and western China, with a significant decrease of 0.79 ppbv in the eastern China and a significant increase of 1.05 ppbv in the western China. The cooling of North Pacific Ocean under the carbon-neutral scenario causes a decrease in near-surface O 3 concentrations by 0.48 ppbv in eastern China due to the weakened chemical production and an increase by 0.74 ppbv in western China attributed to the enhanced O 3 transport from Eurasia. Cooling of Southern Hemisphere oceans leads to anomalous upward air motions over eastern China, which weaken the vertical transport of high-altitude O 3 to the surface. Our results suggest that future changes in SSTs in the carbon-neutral scenario will positively benefit O 3 air quality improvement in the polluted eastern China, with the North Pacific and Southern Hemisphere oceans playing important roles.

Self-assembly of solid nanoclusters in molybdenum under gas ion implantation

The self-assembly of defects in materials could create unique physical and chemical properties. In nuclear fuels, the formation of self-assembled fission products mitigates fission-gas-release and swelling. In this work, we report the formation of a solid nanocluster superlattice in molybdenum, an important constituent in metallic fuels, under krypton gas ion implantation. X-ray absorption near edge structure measurements coupled with density functional theory calculations show that the pressure of krypton nanoclusters in molybdenum is ~2 GPa and molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the krypton atoms are solid in the nanoclusters with a krypton-to-vacancy ratio of ~0.28 at 300 K.

Molecular dynamics simulation of vacancy and void effects on strain-induced martensitic transformations in Fe-50 at.% Ni model concentrated solid solution alloy

Strain-induced martensitic transformations can improve the strength and ductility of some face centered cubic (FCC) metals and alloys. Irradiation-induced defects such as vacancies, dislocation loops, and voids activate martensitic transformations over a wider range of mechanical loading conditions than in pristine material. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying irradiation-enabled martensite transformations remain unclear. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the effect of vacancies and voids on strain-induced martensitic transformations in a model concentrated solid solution alloy Fe-50 at.% Ni. It has been found that single vacancies have no resolvable effect on the transformation because they reduce the stacking fault energy by a relatively insignificant margin and do so only if the vacancy is located on the stacking fault plane. Voids, however, activate the martensite transformation through shear strain accumulation around the void due to dislocation pileup. The larger the void, the more pronounced this effect.

Unraveling small-scale defects in irradiated ThO 2 using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

Point defects and their clusters generated through irradiation can have significant impact on the physical and mechanical properties of materials. However, direct experimental visualization of these small-scale defects using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy remains a challenging task. In this study, using thorium dioxide (ThO 2 ) with the fluorite structure as a model system, we demonstrate the use of ab initio basin-hopping simulations in synergy with object kinetic Monte Carlo simulations as a powerful tool for identifying small defect complexes in irradiated materials. In addition to providing quantitative insights into defect evolution in ThO 2 under irradiation, our study reveals an unexpected role of bound anti-Schottky defect clusters in mediating defect transport. Remarkably, despite their poor thermal stability against dissociation at high temperatures, the transient formation of bound anti-Schottky defects under irradiation and their subsequent migration provide the dominant mechanism for the growth of large interstitial loops that have been experimentally observed in ThO 2 .

Taming the Pseudoelastic Response of Nitinol Using Ion Implantation

Implantation of Ni 50.5 Ti 49.5 wire with 30 MeV Ni 6+ ions at doses (< 0.1 DPA) typically smaller than employed in the literature is shown to systematically alter the pseudoelastic response, with extrema in Berkovich nanoindentation load (+50%), hysteresis (–60%), and recoverable displacement (–19%) occurring at ~ 3.6 μm below the implantation surface. These extraordinary values are attributed to ~ 10 to 20 nm amorphous clusters that constrain the stress-induced B2-B19' phase transformation. This is substantiated by phase field simulations of crystalline-amorphous composites and molecular dynamics simulations of crystalline-vacancy cluster composites showing the spatial refinement of martensite caused by nm-scale defects. Finally, the results suggest that ion implantation may potentially expand the processing and performance space for NiTi, by creating amorphous defects at smaller length scales than dislocation substructures produced by conventional deformation processing.

Three-dimensional morphology of an ultrafine Al-Si eutectic produced via laser rapid solidification

Al-Si alloys processed by laser rapid solidification yield eutectic microstructures with ultrafine and interconnected fibers. Such fibrous structures have long been thought to bear resemblance to those formed in impurity-doped alloys upon conventional casting. Here, we show that any similarity is purely superficial. By harnessing high-throughput characterization and computer vision techniques, we perform a three-dimensional analysis of the branching behavior of the ultrafine eutectic and compare it against an impurity-modified eutectic as well as a random fractal (as a benchmark). Differences in the branching statistics point to different microstructural origins of the impurity- and quench-modified eutectic. Finally, our quantitative approach is not limited to the data presented here but can be used to extract abstract information from other volumetric datasets, without customization.

Benefits and challenges in deployment of low global warming potential R290 refrigerant for room air conditioning equipment in California

High global warming potential gases (“high GWP”) are the fastest growing sector of greenhouse gas emissions in the world and in California and are primarily used as refrigerant gases in refrigeration and cooling equipment. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) refrigerants are the dominant type of high GWP gases with GWP values thousands of times larger than CO 2 on a 100-year timescale. Refrigerant-grade propane (“R290”) has a very low GWP (GWP = 3.3) with good thermodynamic properties and good cooling equipment performance but the flammability of any leaked refrigerant makes equipment design, handling, and maintenance critical factors to manage. This paper focuses on the potential climate benefits and costs of transitioning to R290 refrigerant in small room air conditioning (AC) units, specifically window AC, packaged terminal AC/heat pumps (PTAC/PTHP), and mini-split heat pumps. Overall climate impact for a transition to all three types of air conditioning units in the 2022–2051 timeframe is found to be from 15 to 64 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in California with a cost of saved CO 2 eq that ranges from $14.50 per ton of CO 2 eq saved to -$50.30 per ton of CO 2 eq saved (net savings) depending on whether the baseline refrigerant is R32 or R410A and depending on the relative energy efficiency for R290 units compared to baseline units.

The effects of warming and soil chemistry on bacterial community structure in Arctic tundra soils

Soil microbial communities in the Arctic play a critical role in regulating the global carbon (C) cycle. Vast amounts of C are stored in northern latitude soils, and rising temperatures in the Arctic threaten to thaw permafrost, making relatively inaccessible C sources more available for mineralization by soil microbes. Few studies have characterized how microbial community structure responds to thawing permafrost in the context of varying soil chemistries associated with contrasting tundra landscapes. Here, we subjected active layer and permafrost soils from upland and lowland tundra sites on the North Slope of Alaska to a soil-warming incubation experiment and compared soil bacterial community profiles (obtained by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) before and after incubation. The influence of soil composition (characterized by mid-infrared [MIR] spectroscopy) on bacterial community structure and class abundance was analyzed using redundancy and correlation analyses. We found increased abundances of Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes [Sphingobacteriia] post incubation, particularly in permafrost soils. The categorical descriptors site and soil layer had the most explanatory power in our predictive models of bacterial community structure, highlighting the close relationship between soil bacteria and the soil environment. Specific soil chemical attributes characterizing the soil environments that were found to be the best predictors include MIR spectral bands associated with inorganic C, silicates, amide II (C=N stretch), and carboxylics (C-O stretch), and MIR peak ratios representing C substrate quality. Overall, these results further characterize soil bacterial community shifts that may occur as a frozen environment with limited access to C sources, such as is found in undisturbed permafrost, transitions to warmer and more C-available environments, such as is predicted in thawing permafrost due to climate change.

Probabilistic evolution of stochastic dynamical systems: A meso-scale perspective

Stochastic dynamical systems arise naturally across nearly all areas of science and engineering. Typically, a dynamical system model is based on some prior knowledge about the underlying dynamics of interest in which probabilistic features are used to quantify and propagate uncertainties associated with the initial conditions, external excitations, etc. From a probabilistic modeling standing point, two broad classes of methods exist, i.e. macro-scale methods and micro-scale methods. Classically, macro-scale methods such as statistical moments-based strategies are usually too coarse to capture the multi-mode shape or tails of a non-Gaussian distribution. Micro-scale methods such as random samples-based approaches, on the other hand, become computationally very challenging in dealing with high-dimensional stochastic systems. In view of these potential limitations, a meso-scale scheme is proposed here that utilizes a meso-scale statistical structure to describe the dynamical evolution from a probabilistic perspective. The significance of this statistical structure is twofold. First, it can be tailored to any arbitrary random space. Second, it not only maintains the probability evolution around sample trajectories but also requires fewer meso-scale components than the micro-scale samples. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed meso-scale scheme, a set of examples of increasing complexity are provided. Connections to the benchmark stochastic models as conservative and Markov models along with practical implementation guidelines are presented.

In-situ/operando X-ray absorption spectroscopic investigation of the electrode/electrolyte interface on the molecular scale

A method for performing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the soft X-ray region was developed to investigate the surface-sensitive electron signal of electrode/electrolyte interfaces in common multivalent based organic solvents under in situ/operando conditions. Our approach enables us to probe the molecular-scale structure of electrode interfaces by measuring total electron yield and is suitable for redox systems exhibiting low intrinsic electrochemical current. In-situ F K-edge XAS measurements in a 0.5 M Magnesium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide)/2-Methyltetrahydrofuran (Mg(TFSI) 2 /2-MeTHF) electrolyte were carried out to determine the evolution of interfacial species during the electrochemical charging/discharging process. Time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) simulation indicate that the F K-edge evolution is the result of interfacial chemical environment change driven by electrochemical potential. In addition, we performed the “operando XAS” which runs the CV and collects spectra simultaneously. Furthermore, by using this method, the non-equilibrium state of condensed matter interfaces and interfacial dynamical transient process can be revealed.
