Binders for Thermal-Control Coatings

Methyl trialkoxysilane hydrolysates have been found to be superior binders for radiative thermal-control coatings. Using sprayed test panels, candidate coating formulations were optimized with respect to binder/ pigment radio, ethanol content, pigment particle size, coating thickness, and curing conditions. Binders are made from monomers of trialkoxy-silanes or chain-extended alkoxysilanes. Monomers are believed to polymerize to ladder-type structures like methyl silicone.

Articulated Vacuum Chuck

Vacuum chuck conforms to complex surface contours. Gripping surface is polyurethane panel embedded with links of roller chain. Panel flexes under vacuum to adjust to surface contour, and then bolts are tightened to lock configuration. Possible applications of new chuck are in pull-testing contoured surfaces, holding assemblies together for repairs, or for handling unusually-shaped parts.

Parametric infrared tunable laser system

A parametric tunable infrared laser system was built to serve as transmitter for the remote detection and density measurement of pollutant, poisonous, or trace gases in the atmosphere. The system operates with a YAG:Nd laser oscillator amplifier chain which pumps a parametric tunable frequency converter. The completed system produced pulse energies of up to 30 mJ. The output is tunable from 1.5 to 3.6 micrometers at linewidths of 0.2-0.5 /cm (FWHM), although the limits of the tuning range and the narrower line crystals presently in the parametric converter by samples of the higher quality already demonstrated is expected to improve the system performance further.

Viscoelastic cationic polymers containing the urethane linkage

A method for the synthesis and manufacturing of elastomeric compositions and articles containing quaternary nitrogen centers and condensation residues along the polymeric backbone of the centers is presented. Linear and cross-linked straight chain and block polymers having a wide damping temperature range were synthesized. Formulae for the viscoelastic cationic polymers are presented.

Process for the preparation of fluorine containing crosslinked elastomeric polytriazine and product so produced

Crosslinking elastomeric polytriazines are prepared by a 4 step procedure which consists of (1) forming a poly(imidoylamidine) by the reaction, under reflux conditions, of anhydrous ammonia with certain perfluorinated alkyl or alkylether dinitriles; (2) forming a linear polytriazine by cyclizing the imidoylamidine linkages by reaction with certain perfluorinated alkyl or alkylether acid anhydrides or halides; (3) extending the linear polytriazine chain by further refluxing in anhydrous ammonia; and (4) heating to cyclize the new imidoylamidine and thereby crosslink the polymer.

Development program on a cold cathode electron gun

A prototype electron gun with a field emitter cathode capable of producing 95 mA in a 1/4 mm diameter beam at 12 kV was produced. Achievement of this goal required supporting studies in cathode fabrication, cathode performance, gun design, cathode mounting and gun fabrication. A series of empirical investigations advanced fabrication technology: More stable emitters were produced and multiple cone failure caused by chain reaction discharges were reduced. The cathode is capable of producing well over 95 mA, but a substantial collector development effort was required to demonstrate emission levels in the 100 mA region. Space charge problems made these levels difficult to achieve. Recommendations are made for future process and materials investigation. Electron gun designs were modeled and tested. A pair of two-electrode gun structures were fabricated and tested; one gun was delivered to NASA. Cathodes were pretested up to 100 mA at SRI and delivered to NASA for test in the gun structure.

Research of the state of convection in the Earth's mantle

The behavior and mechanical properties of the lithosphere are studied. Geoid heights derived from the GEOS 3 and SEASAT radar altimeters were used. The following predictive capabilities are discussed: location of unknown seamounts from the knowledge of the geoid heights; prediction of gravity field from the knowledge of the topography and past history of the relief; or insight into the history of a region from the knowledge of both topography and geoid heights. Several geographical areas were studied, including the Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise in the Southern Atlantic Ocean and several seamount chains in the Central Pacific Ocean. Two main factors influence geoid height: conditions of creation and age of the lithosphere at the time of loading.

Investigation of air transportation technology at Ohio University, 1980

Specific configurations of first and second order all digital phase locked loops were analyzed for both ideal and additive gaussian noise inputs. In addition, a design for a hardware digital phase locked loop capable of either first or second order operation was evaluated along with appropriate experimental data obtained from testing of the hardware loop. All parameters chosen for the analysis and the design of the digital phase locked loop were consistent with an application to an Omega navigation receiver although neither the analysis nor the design are limited to this application. For all cases tested, the experimental data showed close agreement with the analytical results indicating that the Markov chain model for first and second order digital phase locked loops are valid.

Perfluoroether triazine elastomers

The synthesis of high performance elastomers with the high thermal stability and chemical, inertness of perfluoroalkylene triazine and a low glass transition temperature is discussed. Perfluorether triazine elastomers were proposed as potentially superior. It is concluded that the difficulties experienced in fluoroalkytriazine elastomer synthesis can be overcome by a four-step reaction process involving chain extension, triazine ring closure, crosslinking, and elastomer curing. Molecular weight can be controlled in the initial polymer formation so that elastomer modulus can be determined. The final product elastomers exhibit a useful elastomeric range of approximately 45 to 325 C with an oxidative stability superior to other broad range elastomers.

Transfer-matrices for series-type microwave antenna circuits

Transfer matrices are developed which permit analysis and computer evaluation of certain series type microwave antenna circuits associated with an L-Band microwave radiometer (LBMR) under investigation at Goddard Space Flight Center. This radiometer is one of several diverse instrument designs to be used for the determination of soil moisture, sea state, salinity, and temperature data. Four port matrix notation is used throughout for the evaluation of LBMR circuits with mismatched couplers and lossy transmission lines. Matrix parameters in examples are predicted on an impedance analysis and an assumption of an array aperture distribution. The notation presented is easily adapted to longer and more varied chains of matrices, and to matrices of larger dimension.

Theoretical microwave spectral constants for C3H/+/ and C4H/+/

A number of linear conjugated carbon chain molecules have been observed in the interstellar gas. It has been suggested that ion molecule chemistry schemes may explain the formation of these compounds. In the present paper, theoretical bond lengths and rotation constants are obtained for C3H(+) and C4H(+). Calculations for C3 are used to assess the accuracy of the former. Recent results for C2H(+) are examined.

B2 1141 + 37 - A giant radio galaxy with remarkable radio and optical properties

Observations of the giant radio galaxy B2 1141+37, which has a widely separated two-component radio structure and is optically identified with a tight chain of galaxies, are reported. The source was observed at 4900 MHz with the VLA at an effective integration time of 17 min. The map obtained shows two radio lobes with maxima coinciding with those in a previous 1415 MHz map and intensities about 1.5 times smaller than those obtained by extrapolating the spectrum defined by the flux density at 408 and 1415 MHz. Measurements of the redshifts of the two brightest galaxies identified with the radio source with an image intensified dissector scanner result in values of 0.1145 and 0.1155, which imply, with a Hubble constant of 50 km/sec per Mpc, a distance of 687 Mpc to the radio source and a separation of 1.0 Mpc between the lobes making it one of the largest radio sources known.

A model for dwarf novae as progenitors of Type I supernovae

It is suggested that a Type I supernova event can be produced as a result of accretion at low rates (less than 10 to the -10th solar mass/year) onto the white dwarf component of a dwarf-nova close binary. At these low rates, diffusion of the CNO nuclei out of the accreted hydrogen envelope can occur on the accretion time scale, and nuclear burning will occur mainly by the proton-proton chain. Studies of this process show that, when the CNO abundance in the envelope is less than 0.0025 of solar, no thermonuclear flash occurs and no mass is lost. The result of the evolution is a gradually increasing layer of helium beneath the hydrogen-burning shell.

Theory of inhomogeneous fluids

A theory of nonuniform liquids is presented which is based on the Yvon-Born-Green equation for the one-particle density and the Ornstein-Zernike equation of an inhomogeneous system. The necessary closure is effected by exploiting the solution of a modified hypernetted-chain equation and making a local approximation on the (highly universal) bridge function. The theory is successfully applied to model problems that have also been studied by direct-simulation methods. A brief generalization to quantum liquids is also given.

Flexible Seal Accommodates Part Mismatch

Chain of plates embedded in flexible seal enables it to withstand side loading of 2,300 psi (116MPa) while sealing gap of up to 0.5 inch (13 mm) between cylindrical chamber wall and test fixture. Pressure-actuated seal along inner edge forces seal into contact even though cylinder wall becomes eccentric as cylinder pressure increases. Seal has many industrial applications, particularly where heat or pressure causes distortion of chamber being sealed.
