Another Year of Record Heat for the Oceans

Abstract Changes in ocean heat content (OHC), salinity, and stratification provide critical indicators for changes in Earth’s energy and water cycles. These cycles have been profoundly altered due to the emission of greenhouse gasses and other anthropogenic substances by human activities, driving pervasive changes in Earth’s climate system. In 2022, the world’s oceans, as given by OHC, were again the hottest in the historical record and exceeded the previous 2021 record maximum. According to IAP/CAS data, the 0–2000 m OHC in 2022 exceeded that of 2021 by 10.9 ± 8.3 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules); and according to NCEI/NOAA data, by 9.1 ± 8.7 ZJ. Among seven regions, four basins (the North Pacific, North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans) recorded their highest OHC since the 1950s. The salinity-contrast index, a quantification of the “salty gets saltier—fresh gets fresher” pattern, also reached its highest level on record in 2022, implying continued amplification of the global hydrological cycle. Regional OHC and salinity changes in 2022 were dominated by a strong La Niña event. Global upper-ocean stratification continued its increasing trend and was among the top seven in 2022.

New Record Ocean Temperatures and Related Climate Indicators in 2023

The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activities. In 2023, the sea surface temperature (SST) and upper 2000 m ocean heat content (OHC) reached record highs. The 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15 ± 10 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules) (updated IAP/CAS data); 9 ± 5 ZJ (NCEI/NOAA data). The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ~0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023. The density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

A comparative study of thermal- and electrocatalytic conversion of furfural: methylfuran as a primary and major product

Controlling reaction selectivity represents a fundamental challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we compare the selectivity in aqueous-phase thermal catalytic and electrocatalytic conversion of furfural and report the fundamental difference in elementary steps in the two reaction systems. Specifically, we observed that furfural alcohol and 2-methylfuran, which is the hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis product of furfural, respectively, are both primary products in electrocatalysis over a Cu electrode, with 2-methylfuran dominating the product distribution under electrode potentials between -0.55 and -0.75 V versus RHE. By contrast, in an aqueous-phase thermal reaction using a SiO 2 -supported Cu catalyst, furfural alcohol and its derivatives from the ring-rearrangement reaction are the major products, without production of 2-methylfuran, at the reaction temperature between 140 and 200 °C. Here, we propose that the distinct selectivity trends for oxygenate conversion via thermal and electrocatalytic reduction result from the distinct sequence of proton attack to the aldehyde group and may be generally true for reduction reactions of other biomass-derived oxygenates.

ExaHDF5: Delivering Efficient Parallel I/O on Exascale Computing Systems

Scientific applications at exascale generate and analyze massive amounts of data. A critical requirement of these applications is the capability to access and manage this data efficiently on exascale systems. As such, parallel I/O, the key technology enables moving data between compute nodes and storage, faces monumental challenges from new applications, memory, and storage architectures considered in the designs of exascale systems. As the storage hierarchy is expanding to include node-local persistent memory, burst buffers, etc., as well as disk-based storage, data movement among these layers must be efficient. Parallel I/O libraries of the future should be capable of handling file sizes of many terabytes and beyond. In this paper, we describe new capabilities we have developed in Hierarchical Data Format version 5 (HDF5), the most popular parallel I/O library for scientific applications. HDF5 is one of the most used libraries at the leadership computing facilities for performing parallel I/O on existing HPC systems. The state-of-the-art features we describe include: Virtual Object Layer (VOL), Data Elevator, asynchronous I/O, full-featured single-writer and multiple-reader (Full SWMR), and parallel querying. In this paper, we introduce these features, their implementations, and the performance and feature benefits to applications and other libraries.

Pressure-induced cation and vacancy disorder-order transition and near-zero τ f in deficient hexagonal perovskite Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 dielectrics

Pressure applications can enable the tuning of atomic/defect ordering and provide access to new functional materials. Here, in this study, we report that pressure-induced structural transformation featuring disorder-order transition of both cations and vacancies in the 8-layer deficient hexagonal perovskite tantalate dielectrics Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 , which transformed the structure from twin to shift and remarkably lowered the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency τ f down to near zero (∼0.56 ppm/°C) from 38 ppm/°C for the twinned precursor. The atomic scale STEM-HAADF and EDS results confirm the ordering of Zn in the Ta host at the nanometer scale in the shifted material featuring well-ordered Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 slabs intergrown with Ba 3 ZnTa 2 O 9 and Ba 5 Ta 4 O 15 monolayers and anti-phase grain boundaries as planar defects. The pressure-induced twin-shift structural transformation of Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 features the rare constant concentration of the hexagonal stacked layers, which is allowed by the vacancy ordering at the central layers of face-shared octahedral (FSO) trimers avoiding the FSO B-B repulsion, and remarkably the faster cationic ordering kinetics compared with the 2:1 ordered complex perovskites. Although the inclusion of numerous planar defects and the oxidizable atomic defects led to significant p-type conduction and inhomogeneous electrical microstructures, resulting in an extraordinarily high extrinsic dielectric loss for the high-pressure shifted Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 pellet, the intrinsically near-zero τ f could make the shifted Ba 8 ZnTa 6 O 24 perovskite an ideal microwave dielectric resonator candidate if the defects could be eliminated.

Dihadron azimuthal asymmetry and light-quark dipole moments at the Electron-Ion Collider

Here, we propose a novel method to probe light-quark dipole moments by examining the azimuthal asymmetries between a collinear pair of hadrons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off an unpolarized proton target at the Electron-Ion Collider. These asymmetries provide a means to observe transversely polarized quarks, which arise exclusively from the interference between the dipole and the Standard Model interactions, thereby depending linearly on the dipole couplings. We demonstrate that this novel approach can enhance current constraints on light-quark dipole operators by an order of magnitude, free from contamination of other new physics effects. Furthermore, it allows for a simultaneous determination of both the real and imaginary parts of the dipole couplings, offering a new avenue for investigating potential CP-violating effects at high energies.

Understanding the Effects of Ash Content on Various Pretreatment Technologies for the Bioconversion of Corn Stover

Here, the study aimed to examine the effects of adding biomass ash on the biochemical processes involved in fermentable sugar production. Corn stover was pretreated using several methods—hot water, dilute acid, alkaline, γ-valerolactone, and ionic liquid methods, each examined with ash loadings of 7.18% and 21.07%. The findings demonstrated that increased ash content adversely affected both pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Specifically, the total sugar yield was 3 to 16% lower at the higher ash content across all pretreatment methods, and up to 4.01% lower during enzymatic hydrolysis. For acidic pretreatment, the sugar yield decreased as ash content increased. In contrast, ash content had a lesser impact on alkaline pretreatment compared to acidic pretreatment. For example, using corn stover with an ash content as high as 22.65% resulted in only a 2.90% decrease in total sugar yield compared to corn stover without added ash. Further, the primary reasons for the reduced sugar yield in higher ash biomass during acidic pretreatments were likely the neutralizing effect of the ash and decreased acid access to the substrates. During enzymatic hydrolysis, ash reduced the sugar yield by limiting enzyme access to cellulose.

Green-Solvent Processed Blade-Coating Organic Solar Cells with an Efficiency Approaching 19% Enabled by Alkyl-Tailored Acceptors

Power-conversion-efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) in laboratory, normally processed by spin-coating technology with toxic halogenated solvents, have reached over 19%. However, there is usually a marked PCE drop when the blade-coating and/or green-solvents toward large-scale printing are used instead, which hampers the practical development of OSCs. Here, a new series of N-alkyl-tailored small molecule acceptors named YR-SeNF with a same molecular main backbone are developed by combining selenium-fused central-core and naphthalene-fused end-group. Thanks to the N-alkyl engineering, NIR-absorbing YR-SeNF series show different crystallinity, packing patterns, and miscibility with polymeric donor. The studies exhibit that the molecular packing, crystallinity, and vertical distribution of active layer morphologies are well optimized by introducing newly designed guest acceptor associated with tailored N-alkyl chains, providing the improved charge transfer dynamics and stability for the PM6:L8-BO:YR-SeNF-based OSCs. As a result, a record-high PCE approaching 19% is achieved in the blade-coating OSCs fabricated from a green-solvent o-xylene with high-boiling point. Notably, ternary OSCs offer robust operating stability under maximum-power-point tracking and well-keep > 80% of the initial PCEs for even over 400 h. Our alkyl-tailored guest acceptor strategy provides a unique approach to develop green-solvent and blade-coating processed high-efficiency and operating stable OSCs, which paves a way for industrial development.

Peptoid-based hierarchically-structured biomimetic nanomaterials: Synthesis, characterization and applications

Peptoids (or poly-N-substituted glycines) is a promising class of bioinspired sequence-defined polymers due to their highly efficient synthesis, high chemical stability, enzyme hydrolysis resistance, and biocompatibility. By tuning the side chain chemistry of peptoids, it allows for a precise control over sequences and achieving a large side-chain diversity. Due to these unique features, in the last several years, many amphiphilic peptoids were designed as highly tunable building blocks for the preparation of biomimetic nanomaterials with well-defined hierarchical structures and desired functionalities. In this paper, we provide an overview of the recent achievements in this area by dividing them into the following three aspects. First, mica- and silica-templated peptoid self-assembly was summarized. Here, the presence of inorganic substrates provides the guarantee of investigating their self-assembly mechanisms and interactions between peptoids and substrates using nanoscale characterization techniques, particularly in situ atomic force spectroscopy (AFM) and AFM-based dynamic force spectroscopy (AFM-DFS). Second, solution-phase self-assembly of peptoids into nanotubes and nanosheets was presented, as well as their self-repair properties. Third, the applications of peptoid based nanomaterials were outlined, including the construction of catalytic nanomaterials as a template and cytosolic delivery as cargoes.

Pseudo-rapidity distributions of charged particles in asymmetric collisions using Tsallis thermodynamics

Abstract The pseudo-rapidity distributions of the charged particles produced in the asymmetric collision systems p+Al, p+Au and$$^3$$ 3 He+Au at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 200$$ s NN = 200 GeV are evaluated in the framework of a fireball model with Tsallis thermodynamics. The fireball model assumes that the experimentally measured particles are produced by fireballs following the Tsallis distribution and it can effectively describe the experimental data. Our results as well as previous results for d+Au collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 200$$ s NN = 200 GeV and p+Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_\text {NN}} = 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV validate that the fireball model based on Tsallis thermodynamics can provide a universal framework for pseudo-rapidity distribution of the charged particles produced in asymmetric collision systems. We predict the centrality dependence of the total charged particle multiplicity in the p+Al, p+Au and$$^3$$ 3 He+Au collisions. Additionally, the dependences of the fireball model parameters ($$y_{0a}$$ y 0 a ,$$y_{0A}$$ y 0 A ,$$\sigma _{a}$$ σ a and$$\sigma _{A}$$ σ A ) on the centrality and system size are studied.

Identification of $^{3}$He–$^{3}$H clusters in the $^{6}$Li+$^{89}$Y experiment using particle-$\gamma$ coincidence measurement

The 6 Li+ 89 Y experiment was performed to explore the reaction mechanism induced by a weakly bound nucleus 6 Li and its cluster configuration. Here, the particle-$\gamma$ coincidence method was used to identify the different reaction channels. The $\gamma$-rays coincident with 3 He/ 3 H indicate that the 3 H/ 3 He stripping reaction plays a significant role in the formation of Zr/Nb isotopes. The obtained results support the existence of a 3 He- 3 H cluster in 6 Li. Direct and sequential transfer reactions are adequately discussed, and the FRESCO code is used to perform precise finite-range cyclic redundancy check calculations. In the microscopic calculation, direct cluster transfer is more predominant than sequential transfer in 3 H transfer. However, the direct cluster transfer is of comparable magnitude to the sequential transfer in the 3 He transfer.

Domain patterns and super-elasticity of freestanding BiFeO 3 membranes via phase-field simulations

Super-elasticity of functional ferroelectric oxides offers promises for integrating ferroelectric films into flexible electronics. However, super-elastic deformation is a complex phenomenon related to possibly multiple concurrent mechanisms. Fundamentally understanding how multiple mechanisms contribute to the super-elasticity of ferroelectric oxides is crucial to realizing their potential flexible electronic applications. In this study, we employ phase-field simulations to model the dynamics of ferroelectric domain patterns of freestanding BiFeO 3 membranes to understand the origin of their super-elasticity under substantial bending deformation (5% strain). It is demonstrated that both a reversible Rhombohedral-Tetragonal (R-T) phase transition and a nearly reversible domain evolution of BiFeO 3 membranes contribute to accommodating the large deformation and thus their super-elasticity. The dynamics of domain evolution also reveal the formation of an exotic ferroelectric vortex and polarization rotation before the phase transition. We constructed a diagram of phases and domain patterns as a function of the membrane thickness and bending angle, which allows one to readily predict the emergence of T phase and ferroelectric vortex in bent BFO membranes. These results not only provide fundamental understanding of mesoscale super-elastic mechanisms but also reveal exotic domain states of ferroelectric membranes.

Predicting path-dependent diffusion barrier spectra in vast compositional space of multi-principal element alloys via convolutional neural networks

The emergent multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) provide a vast compositional space to search for novel materials for technological advances. How to screen promising compositions from such an ample design space for targeted properties is a grand challenge. In this report, we demonstrate the state-of-the-art deep learning technology—convolutional neural network (CNN)—in predicting path-dependent vacancy migration energy barrier spectra, which are critical to diffusion behavior and many high-temperature properties, in the hyperdimensional composition space of MPEAs. The developed CNN model, fully capturing local chemical features surrounding each vacancy, accurately and efficiently predicts migration energy barrier of MPEAs with different degrees of chemical short-range order and at any unseen compositions. By varying the size of the local region encapsulating vacancy in the CNN model, we reveal that the length scale influencing vacancy migration is surprisingly extensive, up to its six nearest neighboring shells. The efforts of the CNN model make it promising for developing a database of diffusion barriers for various MPEA systems, which would have profound implications for accelerating alloy screening and discovering new compositions with desirable properties.

Vacancy diffusion barrier spectrum and diffusion correlation in multicomponent alloys

Vacancy diffusion serves a crucial role in many important kinetic behaviors and properties of multicomponent alloys. Essential questions, however, persist regarding how chemical complexity affects diffusion and what unique characteristics, if any, set these alloys apart from traditional metals. Using neural network kinetics model, we study vacancy diffusion in NbMoTa alloy across a broad temperature range (2600 to 800 K). Unlike pure metals, the two key diffusion parameters—diffusion correlation factor f and activation energy ΔG m —are not constant in alloys, but instead substantially decrease with decreasing temperature. This temperature dependence arises from a reduced number of active vacancy jump pathways at lower temperatures, leading to more correlated diffusion. Upon examining vacancy diffusion throughout the entire compositional space of the Nb-Mo-Ta system, we discover that the slowest vacancy diffusion surprisingly occurs in the non-equimolar region, rather than the equimolar concentration where the configurational entropy is highest. The diffusion barrier spectrum, characterizing the diffusion energy landscape, is an intrinsic material characteristic, which controls both f and ΔG m and, thereby, the diffusivity. Lastly, we find that the vacancy diffusion rate drops noticeably in the presence of local chemical order in the NbMoTa system, particularly for MoTa alloys with long-range B2 order.
