CTE-tuned pyrolytic graphite (PG) substrate to minimize joining stress between laser diode and the substrate

A pyrolytic graphite (PG) substrate and laser diode package includes a substrate body having a PG crystalline structure with a basal plane oriented at a pre-determined orientation angle as measured from a longitudinal axis of a heat generating material, such as a laser diode, mounted on a surface of the PG substrate, so that a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the PG substrate is substantially matched with a CTE of the material.

Tuning MXene Surface Terminations for Strategic Control of Physical Properties

Scientific Achievement • Ti3C2Tx surfaces with a higher hydroxyl group concentration play a pivotal role in surface properties and were found to be thermodynamically stable. • From the electronic bonding analysis, the charge density difference and electron localization function demonstrated a significant electron localization at the hydroxyl group, which results in a locally induced dipole on the surface. • A large tunability in the work function is found from different concentrations of functional groups on the surface which can be controlled by the concentration of HF used for etching of the MAX phase to produce the resulting MXene. Research Details • The influence of termination group distribution on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXenes from various etching concentrations of HF was evaluated • The work functions of Ti3C2Tx MXenes with differing concentrations of functional groups were determined • The influence of termination group clustering on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXenes was investigated by visualization of the electron localization function and charge density difference

Method of tuning physical properties of thermosets

Polymerization-induced phase separation enables fine control over thermoset network morphologies, yielding heterogeneous structures with domain sizes tunable over 1-100 nm. However, the controlled chain-growth polymerization techniques exclusively employed to regulate morphology at these length scales are unsuitable for most thermoset materials typically formed through step-growth mechanisms. By employing binary mixtures in place of the classic constituents of phase-separating thermosets—resin, curing agent, and secondary polymer—facile tunability over morphology can be achieved through a single compositional parameter. Indeed, this method yields morphologies spanning nano-scale to macro-scale, controlled by the relative reactivities and thermodynamic compatibility of the network components. Due to the connection between chain dynamics and microstructure in these materials, the tunable morphology enables exquisite control over glass transition and other physical and mechanical properties.

Probing and Tuning Spatiotemporal pH Evolution in Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer a combination of safety and low cost, but they suffer from dynamic pH fluctuations that drive parasitic reactions and capacity fading. In this review, we report the current mechanistic understanding of the dynamic pH evolution across the electrolyte-electrode interface and its role in triggering interphase instability. We summarize advanced strategies to regulate pH, including electrolyte engineering, electrode surface modification, and interphase construction. We further discuss current methods for probing pH dynamics and outline potential future approaches for gaining deeper mechanistic and design insights.

The impact of neutrino-nucleus interaction modeling on new physics searches

Accurate neutrino-nucleus interaction modeling is an essential requirement for the success of the accelerator-based neutrino program. As no satisfactory description of cross sections exists, experiments tune neutrino-nucleus interactions to data to mitigate mis-modeling. In this work, we study how the interplay between near detector tuning and cross section mis-modeling affects new physics searches. We perform a realistic simulation of neutrino events and closely follow NOvA’s tuning, the first published of such procedures in a neutrino experiment. We analyze two illustrative new physics scenarios, sterile neutrinos and light neutrinophilic scalars, presenting the relevant experimental signatures and the sensitivity regions with and without tuning. While the tuning does not wash out sterile neutrino oscillation patterns, cross section mis-modeling can bias the experimental sensitivity. In the case of light neutrinophilic scalars, variations in cross section models completely dominate the sensitivity regardless of any tuning. Our findings reveal the critical need to improve our theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions, and to estimate the impact of tuning on new physics searches. We urge neutrino experiments to follow NOvA’s example and publish the details of their tuning procedure, and to develop strategies to more robustly account for cross section uncertainties, which will expand the scope of their physics program.
