Environmental Controls on MCS Lifetime Rainfall Over Tropical Oceans

Abstract Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) contribute a majority of rainfall over tropical oceans. However, our understanding of the environmental controls on tropical oceanic MCS precipitation remains incomplete. Using 20‐year of satellite observations, reanalysis data, and MCS tracking, we found that MCSs initiating in a mesoscale environment with enhanced lower‐free‐tropospheric moisture, warmer middle troposphere, stronger low‐level ascent, and stronger deep‐layer (surface‐400 hPa) wind shear tend to produce more precipitation during their lifetimes. While most of these environmental factors are correlated with one another, the deep‐layer shear is not. A rapid pickup in MCS lifetime rainfall is found when the lower‐free‐tropospheric specific humidity exceeds 10 g kg −1 . This nonlinearity is mostly dominated by the nonlinear increase in MCS area. On the other hand, both MCS area and rain rate increase quasi‐linearly with the deep‐layer shear. The increase in rain rate is related to the enhancement of heavy precipitating convective activity with deep‐layer shear.

Measurement of interfacial thermal resistance in high-energy-density matter

Heat transport across interfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon with many unresolved aspects. In particular, it is unknown if an interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) occurs in matter with high-energy-density where free electrons dominate the heat conduction. Here, we report on the first experimental evidence that a significant heat barrier is present between two different regions of high-energy-density matter: a strongly heated tungsten wire and a surrounding plastic layer that stays relatively cold. We use diffraction-enhanced imaging to track the time evolution of density discontinuities and reconstruct the temperature evolution in the quasi-stationary stage. The clear signatures of a temperature jump demonstrate the importance of the ITR for strongly heated systems with far-reaching implications for interpreting experiments and applications like inertial confinement fusion.

Two decades of bacterial ecology and evolution in a freshwater lake

Ecology and evolution are considered distinct processes that interact on contemporary time scales in microbiomes. Here, to observe these processes in a natural system, we collected a two-decade, 471-metagenome time series from Lake Mendota (Wisconsin, USA). We assembled 2,855 species-representative genomes and found that genomic change was common and frequent. By tracking strain composition via single nucleotide variants, we identified cyclical seasonal patterns in 80% and decadal shifts in 20% of species. In the dominant freshwater family Nanopelagicaceae, environmental extremes coincided with shifts in strain composition and positive selection of amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism genes. Further, these genes identify organic nitrogen compounds as potential drivers of freshwater responses to global change. Seasonal and long-term strain dynamics could be regarded as ecological processes or, equivalently, as evolutionary change. Rather than as distinct interacting processes, we propose a conceptualization of ecology and evolution as a continuum to better describe change in microbial communities.

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria User Manual - Version 4.56

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process ows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

Instabilities driven by the fundamental crabbing mode

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) requires crab cavities to correct for crossing angle effects. These cavities produce a time varying horizontal kick that makes the collision head on in the center of mass frame of the bunches. This results in a luminosity that is very close to the the luminosity obtained without a crossing angle. Producing the kick requires a transverse RF field. This field requires a superconducting resonator and reasonable power levels require loaded quality factors of order a million. This results is a very large transverse impedance for the crabbing mode. The horizontal beta function is large and this, coupled with the large transverse impedance of the resonator can lead to strong instabilities. In the first section of the paper a simple model is used to describe the situation without feedback. There are large ranges of tune leading to strong instabilities in both the electron and hadron storage rings of the EIC. These estimates are confirmed with simulations. In the second section, RF feedback is used to reduce the apparent impedance of the crabbing mode. Simulating the actual feedback would require both a significant rewrite of the tracking code and a significant reduction in computational speed. Instead, the apparent impedance is fitted using one pole filters, which allows use of the existing simulation code. In the third section a transverse damping system is outlined.

The Application of Quaternions to Strap-Down MEMS Sensor Data

We describe the mathematical transformations required to convert the data recorded using typical 6-axis microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor packages (3-axis rate gyroscopes and 3-axis accelerometers) when attached to an object undergoing a short duration loading event, such as blast loading, where inertial data alone are sufficient to track the object motion. By using the quaternion description, the complex object rotations and displacements that typically occur are translated into the more convenient earth frame of reference. An illustrative example is presented where a large and heavy object was thrown by the action of a very strong air blast in a complex manner. The data conversion process yielded an accurate animation of the object’s subsequent motion.
